Item Description: Cambridge University / The Encyclopedia Britannica Company, 1910. Hard Cover - Leather. Book Condition: Fair to Very Good. Eleventh Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. ** ELEVENTH EDITION - 1910 ** WITH RARE ORIGINAL ARTS AND CRAFTS BOOKCASE ** LEATHER BOUND ** COMPLETE SET 29 VOLUMES ** PLUS 3 VOLUME "NEW EDITION" IN ITS OWN CASE ** NOTE: Photos accessed with this listing are of the actual books and bookcase you will be sent; please examine them closely as they provide the best indication of condition. A rare opportunity to own the famous 11th Edition of the Britannica in a special limited edition bookcase that was designed and made for a select few of these sets. The bookcase is in remarkable condition, complete and intact and showing few signs of any use or age, with no significant flaws or damage, or even any serious scratching present (the right edge of one shelf is cracked, not noticeable, could likely be easily repaired). Included is the matching headpiece case for the 3-volume "New Edition", issued in 1922 as an update supplement, that is intended to sit neatly on top of the original bookcase (as shown in the photos). The main body of the bookcase is 13.5 inches across (wider at the top and bottom). It stands 5 feet tall with the headpiece. Books are in flexible leather (light brown suede) bindings. All exterior page edges are gilt. All 32 volumes are present and are complete, exteriors in varying conditions. For obvious reasons, the spines are in worse condition than are the books themselves, and for some reason the condition of the spines becomes worse as you move down the bookcase. The spines nearer the floor are in the poorest condition. A number of the boards are detached, but all boards are present and complete. Because they were protected, many of the boards are in Very Good or better condition, in or near the condition of the volume shown in the photos. All pages present, none missing, each book complete, internally clean and unmarked. We will arrange and pay for shipping. Buy with confidence, professional booksellers for 35 years, selling online since 1995. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # AB4678

Item Description: NP, New York, 1922. Hardcover. Book Condition: vg. 32 volumes bound in 15 & 3 Supplement volumes. Sm. 4to. Three-quarter brown cloth over maroon cloth boards with gold lettering on spine. Top edge gilt. Supplement volumes are in gold decorated leather and are encased in plastic. The First Edition of 'The Encyclopedia Britannica' was published in 3 volumes in Edinburgh between 1768 and 1771, however the famous Eleventh Edition is considered one of the most important publications of the 20th century. "Later editions reflect the tendency to court public favor by accepting the claims and beliefs of various religious sects. This edition did not consult with religious groups in preparing its articles. The arrangement of articles tended to make the Eleventh Edition a practical reference work for layman rather than an erudite work largely for scholars and educators. The index was a 'model of well-ordered compactness,' and was designed primarily to aid the general reader. It is perhaps the most useful of all books of reference, and represents the combination of learning, research, co-operation and organization in a higher degree than any other of the monumental works of literature and science." Illustrated with fold-out maps some of which are in color, b/w photographs, drawings, tables and plans. Rubbing, scuffing and staining to boards and spines. Corners bumped and worn. Rubbing to head and tail of spines. Some writing to front board of Vol.1-2. Creasing to some pages. Free front endpaper and half-title on Vol.1-2 torn on upper right edges. Item Description: The University of Chicago Press, Chicago, Illinois, 1976. Hardcover. First Impression. Demy folio, [28.25cm/11inches] full gilt-embossed Navy blue faux-leather with red, white and blue spine labelsThe 15th and latest edition has a three-part structure: a 10-volume Micropædia of short articles (generally fewer than 750 words), a 19-volume Macropædia of long articles (two to 310 pages) and a single Propædia volume to give a hierarchical outline of knowledge. The Micropædia is meant for quick fact-checking and as a guide to the Macropædia; readers are advised to study the Propædia outline to understand a subject's context and to find more detailed articles. The size of the Britannica has remained roughly constant over 70 years, with about 40 million words on half a million topics. Although publication has been based in Chicago since 1901, the Britannica has largely maintained British spelling. Interviewed in February 2009, the managing director of Britannica UK said: "Wikipedia is a fun site to use and has a lot of interesting entries on there, but their approach wouldn't work for Encyclopædia Britannica. My job is to create more awareness of our very different approaches to publishing in the public mind. They're a chisel, we're a drill, and you need to have the correct tool for the job."Please feel free to inquire as to particulars and/or additional snapshots. In exceptionally good condition.
