A handsomely bound set of the scarce eighth edition, containing revisions that were "more thorough than had ever been attempted in any previous edition. It has received so great an accession of original contributions, that nine-tenths of its contents may be said to be absolutely new" (vol. I, pp. xviii-xix). The first edition was published in 1768. 22 volumes, quarto (279 x 216 mm). Contemporary green morocco, spines lettered and richly floral-tooled in gilt, twin gilt fillets and floral roll bordering covers, board edges ruled in gilt, turn-ins richly gilt, marbled endpapers and edges. With 405 engraved plates, of which numerous double-paged and a few folding, and prolific woodcuts in the text. Bound with half-titles. Vol. XXI lacking pp. 89-96. Ownership signature of one Elizabeth Foster Staniforth on first blank of vol. I. Couple of volumes with marks to covers, light rubbing and wear to extremities, neatly retouched with colour, some offsetting from plates and very occasional foxing, else largely clean throughout; vol. XI with neat paper repair to upper margin of p. 773; vol. XX with closed central tear to fold of plate 38, without loss. A very attractive set indeed.

Seller: McConnell Fine Books ABA & ILAB, Deal, KENT, United Kingdom
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 26 volumes (Complete 6th Edition in 20 volumes with the Supplementary edition in 6 volumes), 11 inches tall. A superb full diced calf with gilt raised bands and very fine gilt tooling to the panels. The diced boards are framed within twin gilt fillets. There is blotchiness to the panels of the first 20 volumes, some foxing and browning of leaves, a small amount of ancient superficial loss to long defunct insects, there is also a slight musty smell but the vast majority of plates and leaves are clean and there is no splitting. The first 20 volumes contain all 581 numbered engraved full page plates. The Supplement appears to lack I plate but has a total of 123 (more than called for) engraved full page plates and all 19 engraved maps. The 6th edition is difficult to find in remotely presentable condition and for all its minor faults this is a splendid set. With the green ticket of G. & J. Robinson Booksellers (and Binders) Liverpool.

The Encyclopaedia Britannica is the longest running encyclopaedia in the English language. It was first issued in 100 parts between 1768 and 1771 and first published in book form in 1771 consisting of three volumes, edited single-handedly by William Smellie. Today it is written by 100 full-time editors and more than 4,000 contributors. Its authors have included over 110 Nobel Prize winners and five American presidents. The 2010 edition, which spans 32 volumes was the last printed edition. It continues today as a digital entity. The second edition, published in 1778, was issued in ten volumes and this third edition, the last of the eighteenth century editions, in 18 volumes. Founded by two Scottish printers Colin Macfarquhar and Andrew Bell, the Encyclopaedia Britannica was one of the most enduring legacies of the Scottish Enlightenment. Bell became sole owner after Macfarquhar's death in 1793 and remained so until his own death in 1809. He was also a skilled engraver producing almost all of the copperplate illustrations for the first four editions.

First Edition
First edition, with all the title pages reading The New Royal Encyclopedia (see Alston); 3 volumes in 4, folio, 8-p. subscribers' list at the back of volume III (listing over 1500 names), contemporary full reversed paneled calf, red and black morocco labels on spine; engraved frontispiece in volume I and 153 engraved plates (including 7 folding maps) placed in a separate fourth volume (plate list calls for 150); some slight cracking of the joints on the plate volume, spine ends slightly chipped and/or rubbed, but otherwise very good and sound. Apparently issued in 150 parts. Not in Walsh, Anglo-American General Encyclopaedias; not in Circle of Knowledge; Goldsmiths'-Kress no. 13772; Alston III, 568 recording the third edition (1797?) only with the title The New Encyclopaedia: "The extraordinary variety of editions for each volume found in various copies makes this seem like a bookseller's hoax. The title page to the second volume in the Signet copy reads The New Royal Encyclopaedia . No acknowledgement is made to previous works . The usually found combination is as follows: vol. I - third edition; vol. II - second edition; vol. III - second edition. One of the editor's copies is clearly the first issue with all the title pages reading The New Royal Encyclopaedia and without and edition number.".

Telephone: Museum 2621 stationery. Full page, small quarto. Very fine condition. Bloomsbury, February 5, 1928. To: Dear Mr. Lynd . Woolf writes: ''Thank you very much for asking me to write the article on Thackeray in the Encyclopedia Britannica. I m afraid I cannot do it, as I am already too much engaged, and I know so little of Thackeray that I should have to give up more time than I can spare at present. But it was very good of you to ask me, and I am sorry that I cannot manage it. With many thanks, yours sincerely, Virginia Woolf''. Wonderfully signed in her characteristic deep lavender ink. Her letters are uncommon, and this is an attractive letter, with a fine association of literary names.

Octavo. Original Hardcover / 19th-century half-leather with gilt lettering to spine. Excellent condition with some minor signs of wear only. Name of preowner on third pamphlet ("Michael North") / With a manuscript entry by one 'W.K.', regarding the "garbled" appearance of the Nixon's Prophecy in Fielding's novel, Tom Jones: 'This was probably the very book which Partridge read out of. This shows Fielding's attention to minutiae I think - such a jumbled Head as [barber-surgeon] Partridge wd be likely to mix up those part of the Tale Together'. The Cheshire Prophecy in Chapbook-Style with an advertising bound before the titlepage and "Price Six-Pence" on cover. John Collier (18 December 1708 14 July 1786) was an English caricaturist and satirical poet known by the pseudonym of Tim Bobbin, or Timothy Bobbin. Collier styled himself as the Lancashire Hogarth. Born in Urmston, Lancashire, the son of an impoverished curate, he moved to Milnrow at the age of 17 to work as a schoolmaster. Marriage and nine children meant he needed to supplement his income and he began producing illustrated satirical poetry in Lancashire dialect and a book of dialect terms. His first and most famous work, A View of the Lancashire Dialect, or, Tummus and Mary, appeared in 1746, and is the earliest significant piece of Lancashire dialect to be published. He regularly travelled to Rochdale to sell his work in the local pubs where most of the business of Rochdale was conducted as there was no cloth hall at that time. People in the pubs would ask him to draw portraits of them and their friends and he would charge on the basis of the number of heads in the picture. The Lancashire dialect poetry collection, Human Passions Delineated, a work which he both wrote and illustrated, appeared in 1773. In it he savagely lampooned the behaviour of upper and lower classes alike. The etchings were widely reproduced, and some were printed on ceramics of the time, and a colourised reproduction of 25 of the plates was published in 1810. He died in 1786 leaving the sum of £50 and was buried in the churchyard of Rochdale Parish Church, St. Chad's. He wrote his own epitaph 20 minutes before he died, "Jack of all trades.left to lie i'th dark" which is inscribed upon his gravestone. He had also written a number of other humorous epitaphs for graves, a number of which can still be seen in St. Chad's churchyard. In 1792 Sir Walter Scott visited the grave and suggested that a public subscription be raised to refurbish it. One thousand people donated a £1-0s 0d each, the tombstone was raised and a fence erected around the grave. A ceremony was arranged, which was attended by many eminent people including a number of Lancashire dialect poets who acknowledged their debt to the first of their number, Tim Bobbin. Published by English. The twelve dated in pencil between and 1829, 1811
Manuscript / Paper Collectible Signed
Twelve pencil portraits executed in the same extremely capable style, probably for the purposes of engraving. Each on a separate piece of 4to paper. All in good condition, with light signs of age and wear, a couple with minor flecking with red paint. All dated in pencil (between 1811 and 1829), and all but two captioned. (Several of the items with watermark date supporting the pencil dating.) Three of the portraits have the tiny signature at bottom left of 'Bestland', and all would appear to be the work of the same artist, although the last appears to be signed with the initials 'C H'. Apparently the work of the artist and engraver Charles Bestland (1763-c.1837), otherwise Cantelowe Bestland, possibly of West End, Hampstead, who entered the Royal Academy Schools in 1779 as 'Cantlo Bestland' and exhibited miniatures from 1783 to 1837. (See the 1802 engraving by 'Cantelowe Bestland' of Henry Singleton's painting of the Royal Academicians in council.) Several embossed with details of a Bath stationers, and a number of the sitters from Dorset, perhaps implying a West Country connection. The last of the twelve is of particular interest, as it is depicts a countryman, while the other eleven portraits are of members of the middle classes. The only sitter of note is the editor of the fourth edition of Encyclopaedia Britannica, James Millar (1762-1827) of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh, lecturer at Edinburgh University. The sketch, in light pencil, is on a 22.5 x 18.5 cm piece of watermarked laid paper, captioned in pencil at top left 'J Millar Esqr. March 20. 1823'. It shows a seated Millar, in early old age, in waistcoat and unbuttoned frock coat, holding a book or papers in his right hand. The only other likeness of Millar noted in his entry in the Oxford DNB, a crayon drawing by John Henning, now in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, shows a younger Millar in profile, but the set of the mouth and lower face are the same. The other eleven portraits are as follows. TWO: 28 March 1811. 'Mrs Donne' [wife of Rev. Henry Donne (1767-1830) of Cranborne, Dorset, whose obituary see in Gent. Mag., August 1830] Seated shrewd old lady in bonnet. THREE: 20 September 1811. [Head and shoulders of balding old man in buttoned jacket, staring with set mouth at viewer.] FOUR: 30 November 1814. 'Mrs Cooper'. Only the head of a middle-aged woman with ringlets. FIVE: 12 November 1821. 'Mr Trenchard Pickard | Monday November 12 1821 | at Doctors Commons' [John Trenchard Pickard, later John Trenchard Trenchard (d.1875) of Greenhill House, Dorset] Seated owlish young man in stock and buttoned frock coat. SIX: 19 June 1823. 'Robert Belt Esqr' [(d.1839) of the Inner Temple, see obituary in Gent. Mag., February 1840] Signed 'Bestland'. Self-important figure in frock coat, standing with hand on hip. SEVEN: 10 November 1823. 'Mrs Bridge'. Seated portly older woman in bonnet. EIGHT: 18 October 1823. 'Mr W. Trenchard' [William Trenchard (d.1830) of Litchet Maltravers, Dorset, see his obituary, Gent. Mag., January 1830] Signed 'Bestland'. Upper body of seated older man in stock and buttoned jacket, calmly seated with hands clasped on lap. NINE: 21 December 1824. 'Colol. Serle'. [Col. Peter Serle (d.1826),South Hants Militia, of Montague Place, Russell Square, whose daughter married Horace Twiss] Signed 'Bestland'. Seated balding old man, flapping book on right knee. TEN: 6 October 1827. 'Mrs Pain'. Attractive younger woman in bonnet, head finished, with outline of body. ELEVEN: 29 April 1829. [Young man in stock and buttoned jacket, hair somewhat unkempt.] TWELVE: October 1829. [Striking image of countryman with stick, cradling in his arms a broadbrimmed hat while staring at the viewer.] 'At the Revd Prettyman's Sherington'. [i.e. taken at the vicarage of Rev. John Pretyman [sic], Sherington, Bucks] Signed at bottom right 'C H'.
