Item Description: [probably New York, 1903. Hardcover. Almost Certainly Done by Miss Currie, and theMost Visually Impressive Cosway-Style Binding We've Ever Offered for Sale. 318 x 238 mm (12 1/2 x 9 3/8"). 1 p.l. (title), [89] unnumbered leaves, printed on one side only. Probably ONE OF 26 COPIES, all PRINTED ON VELLUM. NOTHING SHORT OF SPECTACULAR OLIVE BROWN COSWAY-STYLE MOROCCO BY RIVIERE & SON (stamp-signed on front turn-in) ADORNED WITH A TOTAL OF 14 VERY FINE OVAL MINIATURES PAINTED ON IVORY UNDER GLASS, ALMOST CERTAINLY BY MISS C. B. CURRIE, covers bordered by three plain and decorative gilt rules, upper cover with very large central gilt lozenge formed by flowers, volutes, acanthus leaves, and many small tools, the lozenge containing AT CENTER AN OVAL PORTRAIT MINIATURE OF LONGFELLOW (approximately 72 mm. tall), this SURROUNDED BY SIX OVAL MINIATURES OF SCENES FROM THE POEM (each approximately 58 mm. tall), and AN ADDITIONAL FOUR MINIATURES of the same size set in as cornerpieces, surrounded by gilt flourishes and small tools; lower cover with large triangular gilt centerpiece set with THREE ADDITIONAL MINIATURES, two of them views, the other a larger portrait of Evangeline in her nun's habit; raised bands, spines lavishly gilt in compartments filled with volutes, acanthus leaves, and small tools framing a central flower, gilt turn-ins, vellum endpapers, edges untrimmed. In a suede-lined maroon morocco fitted pull-off case. RICHLY ILLUMINATED THROUGHOUT BY JOHN H. TEARLE, with beautiful foliated initials in colors and burnished gold, most of them having leafy extensions, elaborate head- and tailpieces, and with a manuscript title page featuring a three-quarter border of acanthus leaves, flowers, and berries as well as WITH AN OVAL MINIATURE (approximately 70 mm. across) of a woodland scene (a second similar scene of a country churchyard appearing later in the text decoration). Front pastedown with armorial bookplates of Albert Henry Wiggin and Lynde Selden (see below). A typed key laid in at the front citing the lines of the poem that are depicted in the miniatures. The Magnificent Library of Phoebe A. D. Boyle, #179. Slight (inevitable) humpbacked bowing to boards, paint a bit flaked on title page (and with very minor flaking elsewhere), naturally occurring variations in the grain of the vellum, otherwise A MAGNIFICENT COPY, the colors rich, the gold luminous, and THE BINDING IN EXCEPTIONALLY FINE CONDITION. This is the most elaborate and visually impressive Cosway-style binding we have ever seen, and it was both produced and owned by persons of distinction. The size of the volume allows for a remarkable number of miniatures, a fact that sets it apart from all but a handful of Cosway bindings, which are almost always considerably smaller. Just one of the 14 oval miniatures is the customary portrait of the author traditionally used in Cosway bindings, while all the other miniatures here depict scenes from Longfellow's Acadian epic, including: the young Evangeline tending her cows, three paintings showing the houses and cottages of the Acadians, two scenes of the beautiful wilderness of Canada, a dramatic scene of the village being burned, a priest leading the inhabitants of an Indian village in prayer, a happy family gathered around their grandfather, a dramatic confrontation with Redcoats, a city street with a night watchman, the cemetery where our heroine was laid to rest, and a full-length portrait of Evangeline in the habit of a Sister of Mercy. The paintings are very finely done, and the level of their aesthetic achievement strongly suggests that they are the work of Miss C. B. Currie. The distinctive style of the brush strokes clearly matches that seen in her other work. The ultimate authority on this subject, Stephen Ratcliffe, who knows the binding well, has testified in person that it is without a doubt Currie's work. The earliest Cosway bindings were executed by Currie, who is known to have worked for Sotheran for 30 years until her death in 1940. Most of her ea. Bookseller Inventory # CJI1301

Item Description: Boston: William D. Ticknor & Company, 1848, 1848. Duodecimo. Original dun cloth, title gilt to spine, large gilt floral wreath to the centre of both boards contained within blind panelling, cream surface paper endpapers. A little rubbed, head and tail of the spine chipped, short split at the head of the upper joint, hinges a little cracked, light toning, but overall very good. Sixth edition, one year after the first. This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper, "Sarah Butler from her friend, Fanny [Kemble,] December 25th/'45," and with the Butler Place bookplate to the front pastedown. Sarah was Fanny Kemble's elder daughter, named for her aunt, the great tragedienne Sarah Siddons. When Kemble's abolitionism forced her separation from her plantation-owning husband Pierce Butler, her daughters remained in his custody. In 1848 she was touring England, in an attempt to rehabilitate her career, when she was " summoned to America, where her husband filed divorce proceedings on the grounds of desertion; batteries of expensive lawyers were hired on both sides, but Butler finally agreed to a settlement without the formality of a trial, to prevent revelation of evidence extremely embarrassing to him. It was a long and bitter divorce, but it was settled with surface amicability; Fanny was to have $2500 a year and access to the children, who were to live with their father. Butler tried every stratagem to keep from fulfilling the conditions, to the extreme pain of Fanny, who resumed her maiden name." (ODNB) An extremely emotive piece; a Christmas gift, inscribed in the midst of a highly-contested divorce, by a mother to her 13 year-old daughter, "her friend." A number of passages have been marked in the margins in pencil, including these lines; "Talk not of wasted affection, affection was never wasted;/ If it enrich not the heart of another, its waters, returning/ Back to their springs, like the rain, shall fill them full of refreshment ". Item Description: William D. Ticknor & Company, Boston, 1847. FIRST EDITION. Bound in full dark blue morocco by Popelin, with raised bands, silked endpapers, and with the inner covers inlaid with elaborately gilt-decorated red leather. This copy is in the presumed Second State with "Lo" for "Long" in the first line of page 61. Only a handful of copies are known in the first state. With the four-page publisher's catalogue dated "October 1, 1847" noted by BAL to be inserted at the front of some copies. In this copy the ads were preserved by the binder at the rear of the book. The joints are rubbed and there is a half-inch chip from the head of the spine that has been reaffixed. Early owner's faded ink signature on the title-page. A Very Good copy. Livingston speculates that the first printing was 1000 copies, while BAL notes that paper sufficient for 2100 copies was sent to the printer. Given the book's scarcity, the former figure seems likelier. BAL 12089. Livingston p.49. Bookseller Inventory # 000226

Item Description: Cambridge. Printed at the Riverside Press. 1893, 1893. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. With illustrations by F.O.C. Darley Large-Paper edition. Limited to 150 copies, of which this is number 150. Hardcover, 157 pages. Printed in thick, hand-made paper. Bound in full vellum with gold lettering and decorations on the title and spine. Original plain red dustjacket is present, with lettering on the spine. DJ is edgeworn and missing some pieces, but it is present, such as it is. A most beautiful edition, with fine illustrations by Felix Octavius Carr Darley. This edition is a bit of a puzzle – the Riverside Press issued countless editions of Longfellow’s writings in the second half of the nineteenth century. The Darley illustrations first appeared as early as 1879. In 1886 they issued a Large-Paper edition with vellum spines (in 11 volumes). But I can find no other copies of this Large Paper single volume in a full-vellum, limited edition of 150 hand-numbered copies. Evangeline was first published in 1847. This edition coincides with the 46th anniversary of its printing, so it doesn’t even seem like a normal anniversary edition. But it is as nice an edition as you are likely to see. Measures 5.5” x 8”.
