Hard cover. First edition. Blue linen cloth over boards w/ horizontal gold-ribbed design bar, dark blue title box at center; spine gold-ribbed over length w/ blue title box; gold stamped titles. Silver-speckled end papers. 473p., 21 cm. Fiction set during the early 1930s with themes of humanism and pacifism during the post-World War I and international economic Depression eras. The title is from John Milton's 'Samson's Agonistes', a retelling of the Biblical Samson who was captured by the Philistines, suffered his eyes being burned out, then put to work at a menial job. A female character in the book also is a drug addict with a daughter to raise. Aldous Huxley, b.1894 England-d.1963 California, was well-known for 'Brave New World'; and also, he was a short story writer, essayist, poet, editor, dramatist, and screenwriter. He had been blinded by disease for a few years as a young man. The first British edition of 'Eyeless in Gaza' was published by Chatto & Windus, also in 1936, with a very different cover. Huxley moved to California following this publication and, among other achievements in writing, wrote numerous screenplays for Hollywood production. Very good. No dust jacket.
