Spenser's Faerie Queene, A Poem In Six Books With The Fragment Mutabilite. Edited By Thomas J. Wise. Pictured By Walter Crane.
Book Description: George Allen 1895 -1897, London, 1895. 1 of 1000 copies. 4to's, 6 volumes bound from parts. 1546 pp. Illustrated by Walter Crane. Engraved head and tail pieces. Elaborately designed title pages. 85 full page black and white plates with elaborate borders. Printed on handmade paper by Charles Whittingham of the Chiswick Press watermarked UNBLEACHED ARNOLD. Superbly illustrated by Walter Crane, a work more appreciated at the time on the Continent than in England. Konody suggests that it is his best work in black and white. This was Walter Crane's most elaborate and extensive commission as a book illustrator. After 3 years of work Walter Crane wrote a poem to celebrate the finished work " Great Spenser's noble rhyme have I essayed / to picture striving still, as faithful squyre / Each faerie knight to serve, in armes arrayde / 'Gainst savage force, and deathful dragons dire / Be Bolde. I read and did this emprise dare, / And now the door is oped, so let the masque forth fare". Some darkening to some end papers as they were not from handmade paper. Ivory colored cloth bindings with gilt decoration on front covers with red lettering and gilt lettering on the spines and each of the rear covers has the logo in gilt of the publisher. Original salmon colored wrappers bound in though lacking from Volume 1 and 2. Also the top edges of Volume 1 and 2 are untrimmed without gilt that the other 4 volumes have. I don't know why as there is no evidence of the removal of the salmon colored wrappers or why the absence of gilt on top edges of these 2 volumes. Perhaps the wrappers were never bound in and the gilt never applied suggesting a variant set. An uncommonly fine set as to the bindings and contents. Bookseller Inventory # 1005872
The Faerie Queene. Contayning the Legend of the Knight of the Red Cross; or of Holinesse. 6 volumes.
Book Description: George Allen,, London:, 1894. Hard Cover. Binding variant of blue cloth. 1 of 1000 sets on paper (there were an additional 28 on vellum). Walter Crane (1845-1915) was renowned as an illustrator, artist, decorator, and designer during his career. This was CraneÕs most elaborate and extensive commission as a book illustrator. It was inspired by the revival of the private press, particularly the Kelmscott Press, as well as by the transition from Art Nouveau to Arts and Crafts, and by the importance of the illustrator in book production. Each volume is bound in dark blue cloth with gilt title to spine and front board. Walter Crane's illustration of the Queen with a lion is stamped in black on the front covers of each volume. Minor wear including a few small chips to the book cloth along the spine ends, corners, edges, and hinges of most volumes. There is a closed tear to the bookcloth along the spine of volume three which effects the lettering. The interior hinges are tight on most volumes but are starting on a few and are cracked on volume three. There is light browning to the margins of all volumes and occasional small spots of foxing. Top edges gilt with yellow endpages. Overall an attractive set in a very uncommon binding variant. 1546 pages. POE/110711 This set may require an extra shipping fee. Very Good.
