Item Description: Random House, New York, 1971. First edition of the author's second book. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed in full by Hunter S. Thompson and the illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket that shows only light wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp copy. The novel Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is based on two trips to Las Vegas, Nevada, that Hunter S. Thompson took with attorney and Chicano activist Oscar Zeta Acosta in March and April 1971. Thompson wrote that he concluded their March trip by spending some 36 hours alone in a hotel room "feverishly writing in my notebook" about his experiences. The genesis of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas: A Savage Journey to the Heart of the American Dream is in that notebook. The book "cemented Mr. Thompson's place as a singular presence in American journalism or, as he once called himself, 'a connoisseur of edge work'" (New York Times). Adapted into the 1998 film starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Torro. Bookseller Inventory # 884

Item Description: New York: Random House, 1971. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. Steadman, Ralph (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by Ralph Steadman. First edition, first printing. Publisher's black cloth spine over dark gray boards, Steadman's Raoul Duke illustration to the front cover in blind, spine lettered in metallic silver; original pictorial dust jacket designed by Susan Schwaab, with Steadman's illustration of Duke and Dr. Gonzo driving through the desert, lettered in blue, red, and black. An excellent copy, with a hint of light wear and minor toning to the extremities, bright and clean interior; unclipped dust jacket, with traces of minor wear to the spine ends, a faint hint of toning to the top edge of the front panel, otherwise fresh panels. Overall, an attractive and near fine copy. Originally published in Rolling Stone, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is the author's best known "failed but essentially noble experiment in Gonzo journalism," a literary genre that subjectively blends truth and fiction. The novel tells of the protagonist Raoul Duke and his attorney Dr. Gonzo as they travel on a drug-fueled, wild adventure "into the heart of the American Dream." The plot is loosely based on the author's actual adventures with American attorney and activist Oscar Zeta Acosta and is supplemented with Thompson's reflections on the 1960's counterculture movement. Ralph Steadman's iconic and grotesquely beautiful illustrations animate Thompson's bizarre journey, assisting the reader in picturing the novel's absurd events. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was adapted into a popular film of the same name, starring Johnny Depp and Benicio del Toro, in 1998. Bookseller Inventory # HT009

Item Description: New York, NY: Random House, 1971., 1971. First Edition. Octavo. Bound in publisher's quarter black cloth over grey paper boards, blind embossed figure smoking a cigarette to front board, titles in silver to spine. Pictorial dust wrapper, designed by Susan Schwaab, reproduces Steadman's title page illustration with titles in red, blue, and black to front cover, titles to spine, a photograph of the author and "Dr Gonzo", and a cutting and sardonic autobiographical blurb to rear cover; unprice-clipped, originally priced at $5.95. Dust wrapper shows well, with minor tear to front hinge, slight bumping to spine ends consistent with shelfwear, slightly tanned to top front edge, slightly soiled. Binding is tight and attractive, with corresponding fading at top front edge. Internally clean, if Thompson's work can be so described, without any signs of foxing. Considered a seminal American novel, as well as a foundational document to the gonzo school of journalism, Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas is a roman a clef recounting of a drug fuelled trip to report on the Mint 400 motorcycle race. The conceit of sports writing soon gives way to Thompson's vivid prose style, and the novel has only a minor brush with plot. A reading experience not unlike being locked in a tumble dryer with David Lynch, Ernest Hemingway and a pillowcase full of scorpions. It is a book that everybody should read, if only for the reason that it has been responsible (like "Catcher in the Rye" and "American Psycho") for some of the most interesting and also some of the most boring and banal conversations in the history of mankind. Item Description: Random House, NY, 1971. Hardcover. First Edition. Thompson's second book, epitomizing the "Gonzo journalism" that the author invented and which, by a surprisingly universal consensus, he elevated to the status of art. A classic of the freewheeling, drug-ingesting Sixties era, illustrated with hilarious and scary pen-and-ink drawings by Ralph Steadman. Basis for the 1998 Terry Gilliam movie, with Johnny Depp, Benicio Del Toro and Tobey Maguire. This copy belonged to the writer Geoffrey Wolff and bears his underlinings, marginal markings and a couple of comments. Edge-sunning to boards; near fine in a very good dust jacket with fading to the title lettering on the spine and slight edge wear. A writer's working copy for review. Bookseller Inventory # 029007
