Item Description: The S.J. Clarke Publishing Co., Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, 1927. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. 4to - over 9¾ - 12" tall. A comprehensive overview as of 1927 of not only the banks in California, but the development of the monetary system of the state from its earliest beginnings, why paper money was not in use in the initial decades, through the devestating earthquake of 1906 on the banking system and even the effects of WWI. The first two volumes focus on the history of the growing economy, by decade - chapters such as "Before the Argonauts Came", "The First State Constitution", "The Uncertain Fifties", "The Prosperous Sixties", etc. Volume III reviews the banks in San Francisco, giving details in their holdings, structure, and biographies of the major officers of each bank, and Volume IV reviews banks in the other counties of the state. This set will be of interest not just to the student of banking or finance, but anyone interested in the growth of California which was practically a fishing village before the discovery of huge gold and silver deposits, and within the matter of a few decades was one of the country's leading state economies. ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ira B. Cross (1880-1977) received his Bachelor and Master degrees from the University of Wisconsin, and while there became a member of the Socialist Party, even serving as the Secretary of their National Convention in 1904. He studied at Stanford for his Doctorate, graduating in 1909 after which he remained at Stanford as a professor. Despite his political leanings, in 1914 he was asked by the UC President to accept a position within the Department of Economics at UC Berkeley, where he remained until 1951. It was while he was at Cal that he wrote this and other books on economics and banking, highly regarded today. ***DESCRIPTION: Leather with highly decorative, embossed covers depicting a bank in white relief, an eagle beneath, the title on copper-colored insets, with oak leaf clusters in the corners. The spine has copper-colored insets surrounding the lettering with "Illustrated" at the tail of the spine, the back boards are plain. Top edges gilt, green marbled endpapers, Volume I has a tissue-guarded steel-engraved frontispiece of the author, there are nine other tissue-guarded steel-engravings scattered through Volumes III and IV, besides numerous black and white vintage photographs of people, banks, streets, even the earliest paper money printed in San Francisco. Pagination: Volumes I and II are numbered sequentially, totaling 1,010 pages; Volume III is 531 pages and Volume IV is 448 pages. ***CONDITION: In this particular, the "Ex-Library" we believe to be added interest, not a detraction. This set came from the San Francisco Stock Exchange Institute, and does have library call numbers on the spines, library stamps on the edges of the text blocks and scattered throughout the volumes, it has their bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume with an illustration of a tickertape, and even has library pockets at the rear of each volume - with some withdrawals dating from 1928 to 1930. Physical condition of the set is overall near fine, each volume has a strong, square text block and solid hinges, the corners are perfectly square, there is only minimal edgeware, and other than the SF Stock Exchange Institute markings, there are no prior owner markings (note that the Stock Exchange closed its doors in 1999). ***CITATION: Cowan, Volume IV, 122. ***POSTAGE: Please note that this is a large, heavy set and additional postage will apply. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help. Bookseller Inventory # 14022801
