The fine woodcuts were cut after paintings by Lakas Schan, some of which survive as part of the Felix Platter collection in the Basle University Library. The various publications of Gessner, 'considered the basis of modern zoology' (Horblit. One Hundred books famous in science, 39), are the foremost purely zoological works of the Renaissance period. His most original contribution to science was his introduction of illustrations as an aid to the study of biology.
