Cloth. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Hardback First Edition If only Flashman had got on with his dinner, and ignored the handkerchief dropped by a flirtatious hussy in a Calcutta hotel.well, American history would have been different. Lincoln might never have entered the White House, an elderly farmer would probably not have been hanged in his carpet slippers, a disastrous civil war might have been avoided - and Flash Harry himself would have been spared one of the most hair-raising adventures of his misspent life. This tenth volume of "The Flashman Papers" finds him once more palpitating at the hinge of history, and, in the breathless intervals between flights, escapes, dalliances, and thunderous action, casting his sardonic and perceptive eye on human folly and frailty and a long-forgotten crisis which shaped the destiny of the Western world. And as millions of admirers know, history is never quite the same after Flashman has observed it from wherever he happens to be lurking.

Seller: James Cummins Bookseller, ABAA, New York, NY, U.S.A.
9 x 7 inches. Typed on rectos only, with a few corrections in ink. 4 pages total. 4to. A choice clutch of correspondence from George MacDonald Fraser (1925-2008), author of the enormously popular adventures of Flashman, cad and scoundrel - or, "a coward, a bully, and a satyromaniacal philanderer" (ODNB) - who is nevertheless at the heart of the military and amorous history of the nineteenth century. "On the back of the Flashman series' success, Fraser pursued a yet more lucrative career as a Hollywood screen-writer. His credits included The Three Musketeers (1973) and its sequel, The Four Musketeers (1974), Royal Flash (adapted from his novel, and starring Malcolm McDowell and Britt Ekland, 1975), The Prince and the Pauper (1977), the James Bond vehicle Octopussy (1983). . As he grew older, living in the tax exile's seclusion of the Isle of Man, his political and social views became steadily more hard-line" (ODNB). Robert Skinner, Medical Bibliographer at Louisiana State University (later at Xavier University), and specialist in the history of military medicine, first wrote Fraser after seeing a painting of the battle of Juarez in April 1863: "There is a figure cowering behind the French fortifications that resembles Flashman in a disturbing way." Fraser responds, thanking Skinner "for the nice things you say about Flashy . Flash-like creatures crop up in many Victorian paintings, and I'm note surprised that one appears in the Camerone picture. I haven't seen it, althogh the action itself has been one of my favorites . however I'll say no more about it just now, beyond drawing attention to the already published fact that he was aide-de-camp to Emperor Maximilian." The other letters, dated 1992 and 1993, discuss weapons and American accents and Norfolk village dialects. Excellent letters with interesting content. Fine. With envelopes and with Skinner's retained copies of his letters 9 x 7 inches. Typed on rectos only, with a few corrections in ink. 4 pages total. 4to.

Signed on the title page by the Author as ?George M Fraser? I cannot help but think what an excellent long term investment this signed set of books is likely to be. In the latter part of his life Mr Fraser did virtually no signings whatsoever and finding signed copies of some of the early and mid-range titles has now become very difficult. Two letters from George Macdonald Fraser are enclosed to fellow author, Dennis Wheatley relating to Wheatley's review of "Flashman" in the Glasgow Herald. The first is a 9-line typed letter from Fraser's Glasgow address and dated May 13, 1969: "Dear Mr Wheatley, It's a magnificent review, and I can't thank you adequately for it. There is nothing that I can imagine that could give the book a better send-off than this, and quite apart from that, it is a tremendous personal satisfaction to know that you enjoyed it. There can't be any higher praise than that. Thank you once again, very much, for what you have written, and for your kind wishes. Yours sincerely, [Signed] George Fraser". The second is a 20-line typed letter from Fraser's Isle of Man address and dated Dec. 27, 1969: Dear Mr Wheatley, I haven't seen a "Daily Mail" in the last past week or two, unfortunately, and back numbers are hard to come by in the Isle of Man, but Herbert Jenkins range me specially to tell me of the marvellous things you said about Flashman in your Christmas books choice. That really was very kind, and I'm delighted to know that you enjoyed him enough to remember him at this time of the year. Coming on top of the splendid review you gave him in the "Glasgow Herald", it was a very nice Christmas present. Thank you very much. I've no doubt you are busy preparing another excellent adventure, and I am looking forward to it immensely. All the best of good fortune in 1970 to you and Roger and Gregory and Julian and Lucky and others; I'd like to think I could have half a distinguished a "Family" some day. Yours sincerely, [Signed] George Fraser. Photographs available upon request. One for the Pension Fund! For the set of 12 books. Signed by Author.
