First Edition Signed
Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First Edition. Signed on the title page in a blue ink. Uncommon signed, and signatures from Clements are uncommon or scarce in general. Clements was a pioneering botanical ecologist and the first woman to be given a PhD by the University of Nebraska. She collaborated her whole life with her husband the botanist Frederic Clements, and together they founded the Alpine Laboratory on Pikes Peak. Their papers are found at the University of Wyoming. Willa Cather was a friend and fan of their work, and apparently her fiction was influenced by their work. This book surveys flowers from California through British Columbia and includes her botanical watercolors which were originally done for National Geographic magazine. Dark cloth with blindstamping, gorgeous columbine flowers in red and yellow and leaves and lettering in green. Very good with some sunning to spine and a list of flowers written in pencil on the rear pastedown. Interior pages and plates clean and bright.
