Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1940. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Ernest Hemingway. First edition, second printing, which lacks the "A" of a first printing. Published by Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1940. The book measures 5.5" x 8.5", 471 pages. A brand new facsimile (reproduction) dust jacket is included for protection and display. The book is in good condition. Moderate soiling to the boards and especially at the spine. The front board is starting. Some browning to the gutters of the front and rear boards, as is often found with the first edition of this book. Staining at the margins of the preliminary and terminal pages. The textblock is gently toned but largely clean. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Hemingway's biggest literary triumphs. Written in 1939 and finished in 1940, the first edition was published in October of that year, with a print run of 75,000 copies. The novel was inspired by Hemingway's experiences as a journalist in Spain during its Civil War. The plot centers on an American dynamiter who joins forces with an anti-fascist troupe to carry out the detonation of a bridge. What unfolds is a story of bravery, deception, love, and agony. "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is one of Ernest Hemingway's greatest novels. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. Item Description: Jonathan Cape, London, United Kingdom, 1941. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. True first British printing with original unclipped jacket (9s 0d). Jacket has numerous faults - namely patchy loss, tears, edge/shelf wear, rubbing, few marks, patchy browning and is a little fragile. Blue boards are very good with just a little pushing/rubbing to head/tail of spine, the odd small bump to edges, little patchy rubbing and some pushing/little bumping to corners. The binding is tight and book is square and true. Page tops bit dusty. End-papers are a bit tanned with a few marks. There are some small marks/odd spot of foxing to page tops, edges and bottoms. Occasional crease to some pages. Occasional small marks to some pages. No other faults. A solid copy in the rather worn jacket. All books described honestly and accurately. Paypal accepted.
