Item Description: MacMillan, 1944. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 7th Printing. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Forever Amber, Kathleen Winsor, Macmillan, 1944, 7th printing, 972 pages. Author's first novel, signed by her on the dust jacket. Description: Book; Green boards with gold lettering to spine only, illustrated endpapers with map of London circa 1600's. Dust jacket; Illustrated green design by J.S. Vigne showing Amber as seen in a mirror. Design wraps to the spine with white lettering outlined in black along with a white Royal Coat of Arms, rear panel has Brockway Studios photo of author, inside front flap is signed by the author under her name on top, synopsis follows, not price clipped. Synopsis continues on back flap above author's bio. Condition: Book; Very good with several minor flaws, dirt along the leading edge of pages, loss of luster to the gold lettering, book is slightly shaken and the lower edge of the spine is worn along the edges, but still a bright and overall clean example of the author's first book. All pages are clean and the spine shows almost no sunning but several palm prints as this book was read and reread more than once. There is a stain on the top of the back of the ffep and bleeds through slightly to map but it also effects the first letter on the title page opposite and the bleed through of that page to the top of the copyright page on the reverse. Dust jacket; Good; Bright front panel with little sunning to the spine, back panel bright. Author's signature in blue ink under her name on the front flap. Jacket shows several lines, creases and chips and is very fragile with loss to the top of the spine that does not affect any design elements, pieces missing along the bottom edge that do affect the publisher's name and the leading edges of the flaps are starting in a few places but still holding together. Jacket w/signature was found folded inside the back board and is now protect in clear-to-both-side Brodart. Rare example of author's signature on the dj. Author. Bookseller Inventory # 2927

Item Description: New York: Macmillan, 1944, 1944. First Edition. Very good or better in dust jacket. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author to her then-husband Artie Shaw, "To Artie - in case you finish this and want some explanation - Dryden once said that Ôthey who live to please must please to live.' Kay. Los Angeles, October 15, 1946." Winsor divorced her first husband and married Shaw ten days later, divorcing in 1948. This novel was an enormous success, selling three million copies, and was adapted into a successful film in 1948. Considered racy for its day, this reputation and its sales were no doubt enhanced by being banned by the Massachusetts Attorney General. She was not the most famous of Shaw's many wives: Ava Gardner and Lana Turner were better known; Jerome Kern's daughter was wealthier. Bookseller Inventory # 27387
