Item Description: 1944. WINSOR, Kathleen. FOREVER AMBER. NY: The Macmillan Company, 1944. 8vo., green cloth in dust jacket; 972 pages. First Edition, first printing (so stated). Adapted into a successful 1948 movie, the 972-page novel was edited down to one-fifth of the manuscript Winsor originally presented to the publisher. Condemned for blatant sexual references, 14 states banned the book as pornography. Despite its ban, "Forever Amber" was the best-selling U.S. novel of the 1940s, selling more than 100,000 copies in its first week of release and eventually selling more than three million. Signed by Winsor on verso of the front endpaper. I have also noted two variant dust jackets but I have little information to offer about them. This dust jacket, which is uncommonly fragile, is entirely printed in blue- both text & the photograph on the rear cover. It is my experience that this is the more uncommon dust jacket but, if it is the earliest one, I do not know. Very Good (little wear covers; contents clean & tight); some wear & chipping (one-inch chip base of spine; $3.00 price is present but lower corner of front flap is clipped; few interior clear-tape repairs) d/j. $750.00. Item Description: New York: Macmillan, 1944, 1944. First Edition. Very good or better in dust jacket. Presentation copy; inscribed by the author to her then-husband Artie Shaw, "To Artie - in case you finish this and want some explanation - Dryden once said that Ôthey who live to please must please to live.' Kay. Los Angeles, October 15, 1946." Winsor divorced her first husband and married Shaw ten days later, divorcing in 1948. This novel was an enormous success, selling three million copies, and was adapted into a successful film in 1948. Considered racy for its day, this reputation and its sales were no doubt enhanced by being banned by the Massachusetts Attorney General. She was not the most famous of Shaw's many wives: Ava Gardner and Lana Turner were better known; Jerome Kern's daughter was wealthier. Bookseller Inventory # 27387
