Item Description: Jonathan Cape, London, 1957. First edition. Octavo, original black boards. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket with some toning to the spine "Described in the Times Literary Supplement as ‘most brilliant,’ the book was a great commercial success and helped to launch Fleming as a best-selling novelist It ended with Bond seriously wounded and nearly killed by fugu poison from the sex organs of the Japanese globe-fish While the ending was not quite Sherlock Holmes and his apparently fatal last struggle with evil at the Reichenbach Falls, Fleming had provided himself with an opportunity to remove his hero. He was not, however, to take it. There was public agitation when 007 was reported dead. Bond was irreplaceable" (Black, 27, 30). "This is a very highly sought after title, as it is generally considered the best novel in the series and the best of the movies, as well" (Biondi & Pickard, 44). Made into the 1964 film of the same title with Sean Connery as Bond and Lotte Lenya as ex-KGB agent Rosa Klebb. Bookseller Inventory # 4332

COMPLETE SET OF ALL 14 IAN FLEMING/JAMES BOND HARDCOVERS PUBLISHED BY UK PUBLISHER PENGUIN IN 2002: CASINO ROYALE, LIVE AND LET DIE, MOONRAKER, DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER, FROM RUSSIA, WITH LOVE, DR. NO, GOLDFINGER, FOR YOUR EYES ONLY, THUNDERBALL, THE SPY WHO LOVED ME; ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE, YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE, THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN, OCTOPUSSY & THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS, all books are First Printings ("1" numberline on copyright page - there never was a later printing of this book in this format), white endpapers, black boards with silver gilt lettering to spines, 17.99p price on DJ front flaps. Note - Penguin/Viking had secured the printing rights to Fleming's books from his estate in the early 2000s and released a uniform set of paperbacks (both individually and as a set in a cardboard slipcase) - apparently wanting to renew HC printing copyrights in the UK this publisher issued a very limited edition printing (1000 copies) of each of the 14 James Bond books (using the same black cover art used on the paperbacks) in hardcover form - most of these books were sold to U.K. libraries or were stamped by Penguin with a "remainder" stamp to the ffe so finding clean copies of these books is very difficult. Books & Dust Jackets are in very nice condition - books all appear unread, no former ownership markings or used bookstore stamps inside (no Penguin stamped remainder markings to any of the ffe - as often found with these books), no foxing/dust soiling to outer page edges (age darkening only), no bumped board corners or soiling or staining to boards; no chipping/tearing/creasing/spine tip wear/soiling/staining/spine sun fading or edge wear to dust jackets, no sun fading to DJ spines. Overall a very nice N-FINE books in N-FINE dust jackets of a very difficult to find Ian Fleming James Bond complete UK Penguin hardcovers. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Ian Fleming James Bond 1st printing hardcover appearances up for sale. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-1473220145773
