Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Thus. New York: McGraw Hill, 1971 285 pp with an annotated index. 140 B&W photos. Printed on extra-heavy stock. In 1936 Alistair Cooke invited eight fellow-critics to join him in in what he conceived to be " a casual chronicle of pleasure and pain in the movies." That it turned out to be more than casual is due to the surpassing skills of the nine writers. Here is Graham Greene, then film critic for the Spectator, writing about Bing Crosby, whom he describes as representing " permanat, if disagreeable human characteristics of nostgalgia and self-pity." Read Meyer Levin's savage and accurate diatribe about American patriotic movies. There is great critical and historical value in noting how writers of this calibre reacted in the '30's to Soviet films, to "Modern Times", "Camille," and "KingKong." For this new edition of a book first published in 1937, Cooke has provided a Foreword which looks both foreward and backward, and an annotated index citing technical details of the films discussed in the essays. Text is super clean, tight and unmarked. Bookseller Larry Edmonds stamp on front endpaper. Black boards with stamped silver title are "as New." DJ designed by Milton Glaser is clean, bright, no chips at all, with the slightest yellowing along edges. Price unclipped. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. First Thus. Hard Cover. Fine/Near Fine.
