Book Description: Christopher Barker, London, 1579. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 8 x 6.5 x 3.5". OT Title Page: 1579 FAC NT Title Page: 1579 Colophon 1579 Size: 8 x 6.5 x 3.5 Font: Black Letter A historic work. The Geneva Bible was a product of men and women wanting to be free to study the word of God on their own. The Geneva Bible was originally printed in Geneva, Switzerland in 1560. Bloody Mary drove tens of thousands from their lands during her historic and well documented persecution as Queen of England. The fact that this Bible would be allowed to be printed on English soil nearly 22 years after her reign ended is most fascinating. The earliest in the long series of quarto Geneva Bibles printed in England. The border used for the general and N.T. titles resembles that in the folio edition of 1578; with two symbolical female figures, the royal arms, the lion and dragon, and the initials C B; the tablet is blank. This edition has unique hand drawn Genealogy of the Old Testament interwoven into the text making it a very curious and unique work. There are also a handful of other pages inserted into the text which is not called for. Some of the inserted pages come from later works of various different editions while some are in color and appear to come from the late 19th century. There is also a woodcut depicting St. John inserted before the book of Revelation. D&M 120 A. Bookseller Inventory # 000039

Book Description: Christopher Barker, London, 1612. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. [Bible in English.] The Bible that is, The holy Scriptures contained in the Old & New Testaments. ¿ London: Barker, [n.d. 1612] Small folio in sixes. The 1612 Barker reprint (Herbert 312) of the 1607 Barker small folio Geneva Bible (Herbert 289) in the final recension of the Geneva-Tomson-Junius Biblical text. New Testament title-page dated 1611. The colophon, now excised, would have been dated 1612. [No date called for on the engraved general title-page which is here supplied in facsimile.] An interleaved copy, bound in two volumes. This copy has no preliminaries (four leaves) and no back matter (ends at 5E3, finis of Revelation, lacking 5E4-6 and 5F1-4) ¿ all of which was clearly removed deliberately when the text block was interleaved and first bound in two volumes. The set is in a new binding of full calf, keeping the same division of volumes, breaking between Ccc1 and Ccc2 in Jeremiah. Each volume has a custom inserted title-page unique to this presentation which is likely 19th Century. Some expected general light soil, staining or toning ¿ but less than usually encountered. Some corner and edge-tiredness at beginning and end. Some minor edge repairs. Overall near fine. Interleaved for study notes and, indeed, there are intermittent notes in a 19th Century hand. Book Description: Christopher Barker, London, 1578. First folio edition. Preface by Thomas Cranmer, sometime Archbishop of Canterburie. Thick folio. 3 woodcut maps, numerous further woodcut text illustrations. Text in English. Printed in black letter Gothic. Bound in 18th century dark red morocco, black leather spine labels, marbled ends. General title in photographic facsimile; New Testament engraved title genuine beginning, "The Newe Testament of our Lord Jesus Christ," four preliminary leaves of text repaired at edges and lower corners, with no loss of text; almanac, etc. lacking, as are the leaves between end of New Testament and Tables. One text leaf badly faded. Corners lightly worn, hinges lightly rubbed. Overall a very nice copy. The Geneva Bible is one of the most historically significant translations of the Bible into English, preceding the King James translation by 51 years. It was the primary Bible of 16th century Protestantism and was the Bible used by William Shakespeare, Oliver Cromwell, John Knox, John Donne, and John Bunyan. It was one of the Bibles taken to America on the Mayflower. This version of the Holy Bible is significant because, for the very first time, a mass-produced Bible was made available directly to the general public and included verse citations which allow the reader to cross-reference one verse with numerous relevant verses in the rest of the Bible, introductions to each book of the Bible which acted to summarize all of the material that each book would cover, maps, tables, woodcut illustrations, indexes, as well as other included features - all of which would eventually lead to the reputation of the Geneva Bible as history's very first study Bible. The Geneva Bible is also known as the "Breeches Bible." The term derives from the reference in Genesis iii:7 to Adam and Eve clothing themselves in "breeches" made from fig leaves. A tiger and a lamb enclosed within a frame and the motto: 'Tigre reo animale del. Adam Vecchio. Figlivolo - Merce L'evangelio - Fatto n'estat agnol'. There is some ink lines and very occasional marginalia to the text, though the Newe Testament title page both front and back and the final page have considerably more of it including what appear's to be three former owner's ink inscriptions and a little bit of arithmetics. The binding has been skilfully rebacked, retaining most of the backstrip, with the words Holy Bible, in gilt, still just visible. Later blank end papers, with 1876 inscription to front and some ink marks. Pagination: main title page, 5, full page engraving, Genealogies 1-26 and 31-34 (missing 2 leaves - pp 27-30), description of Canaan and bordering countries (4pp including double-page map), 1; then the Old Testament, 1-444 (888pp), then New Testament title page 1616 (see photograph), pages 1-135 (270pp), first and second tables. Quite a few of the pages have been misnumbered but the text follow-ons show that none appears to be missing, apart from the 2 leaves of Genealogies by J.S. (John Speed). Some pages have been very skilfully repaired and almost invisibly strengthened, especially around the blank margins. Very few minor marks. Generally clean with little foxing and only light age-browning. Light age-browning/staining of some leaves in the New Testament. Small hole in lower margin of New Testament pp 91-94, but no loss of text. There appears to be no significant loss of text anywhere. There are quite a few good woodcuts in the text. Small folio. Black Letter. Size 13 x 9 inches (330 x 230mm). This is a large and heavy book which will require extra shipping charges above the ABE base rate, including insurance. See photographs of this actual book attached, giving details of the wording on the title pages etc. More images or further information available on request. Reference Herbert 348. Book Description: London Imprinted at London by Robert Barker Printer to the Kinges most excellent Maiestie Cum Priviledio and n.d, 1613. Geneva Version known as the "Breeches Bible", printed in double columns in Gothic type with marginal notes in Roman type, 4to. old full brown calf, skilfully respined with blind lines either side of raised bands, contrasting red leather lettering lettering-piece, date at foot of spine in gilt, replacement endpapers, Incomplete copy, lacking titlepage to Old Testament and and a few preliminary leaves, begins C2 with 10 leaves of the Genealogies of Christ, Old Testament starts begins Genesi s 1, two sections misbound, ownership inscription of George Pearse in margin of two leaves and one dated 1678, upper margin of some leaves cropped with loss of letters, outer margin of six leaves in 'Psalmes' heavily frayed with loss of letters, lacking last leaves of Apocrypha and titlepage to New Testament, begins again at Matthew 1, lacking 8 leaves from Matthew/Mark, long ownership inscription of George Giles Shepheard dated 1790 on blank verso of titlepage to Concordances when he was 12 years old, a number of small stains and tears in text, Victorian engraved armorial bookplate of Henry Long on endpaper, covers showing some signs of age but withal a good looking well polished 17th century Bible. This Bible is lacking both the Old and New Testament titlepages and the only printed date in this Breeches Bible is the date of 1613 printed on the titlepage of the Concordance at the end. The Bible itself was probably printed a little earlier as few editions of the Breeches Bibles were printed after the Authorised Version of 1611. Possibly one of the last of a long line of editions of the Breeches Bible to be printed. This Bible has a charming history as it belonged George Giles Shepheard in 1790 when he was only 12 years old. Book Description: London Robert Barker 1578, 1578. This is a deficient early copy of the Geneva Bible. Dated from the Verso of the Concordance, this is a curious edition. The title to the Concordance states that it was printed by Robert Barker "Printer to the Queenes Most excellent Majestie" but at this time, it was his father who was the Queen’s official Printer until 1599 and he did not start working for his father until 1589. Although there are hundreds of pages of Black letter text, this bible is in poor condition, and is missing significant portions. However, it does contain most of the bible, including the Deuterocanonical books (not present in Protestant Bibles from the King James onwards.) Bound in a Nineteenth Century (?) binding, this is rubbed and a little frayed to the edges. The bible itself lacks all prior to Deuteronomy verse. vii. (kii). The pages are darkened and marked, several of them have tears to them (some closed, others with significant loss). The edges of the book have been shaved overly closely, with a little loss to the Glosses and Marginalia. The top and bottom corners of the pages have been lost, with them, most of the page numbers have gone. Pages are darkened and with some staining. There are names and dates to several pages (particularly to the end of the Old Testament). These vary from 1681 ("Charles King - but not his book" the 1830’s). There are 85 leaves lost - mainly from the first few books of the Bible, which are not present, but 4 pages from within the text. The second of the concordances stops mid flow, and there is obviously intended to be further text- but it is not clear how much (not many pages from the look of it). Sadly the loss of pages includes the title pages (except that of the Concordance). So overall a very deficient text - but still very early and of interest. Bookseller Inventory # 1091
