Item Description: London, 1576. Leather. First Thus. Ist edition published in England, 1576. The English printing followed the Amsterdam edition in 1560. General title page and title page to New Testament. Woodcut illustrations, including folding plate and folding map, and woodcut capitals to each book. Collation as follows: i-vi (Title and prelims); 336 leaves (Old Testament), 84 leaves (Apocrypha), 115 leaves (New Testament) + 10 leaves of tables, and 1 leaf chronology of lineage of Christ from Adam with 16th century signature to verso. Quarto. Printed by Christopher Barkar (sic), London. Scarce and important milestone in Bible history. It was the first English Bible to be printed in Roman type and the first published in quarto, a democratic measure that made it affordable to a wider readership than previous folio editions. It was the first to include systematic, detailed marginal commentaries. It also contains the notes on Revelations by Bale and Bullinger that were replaced, in Geneva Bibles published after 1599, by those of Franciscus Junius. Title page soiled and repaired without loss of text ; a few minor page repairs, including re-margined leaves (none affecting text).Damp marking throughout, mainly marginal, affecting about a fifth of each page, severe at front and back of book (Leaves 1-44 and last dozen leaves), decreasing further in, and hardly noticeable in parts. Occasional underlinings and neat marginal emendations in a contemporary hand to a few books (Isaiah being most affected). Signed, mid-nineteenth century binding, by Worrall of Birmingham, in full calf with raised bands, all edges gilt, and rules to front and back. Rubbed with small chip to top of spine. Scans available of cover, title pages, and sample pages. Shipping (including insurance and tracking), outside the UK, will be considerably more than quoted !. Bookseller Inventory # T092

Item Description: Christopher Barkar, London, 1576. Full Leather. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Reprint. 1576. Christopher Barkar (Barker) imprint at London. The first Geneva folio in England. An essentially very clean, tight copy in extraordinarilly fresh condition to some leaves (despite this Bible being published in only the 18th year of the reign of Queen Elizabeth First - but with some loss. Missing the general title page and all before page three (starts with Genesis Chapter five). Also loss to the lower corners of the following four leaves with paper repairs, and margins strengthened with paper. Slight textual loss elsewhere to several of these leaves. Collates : pp. 3 - 365 (no page loss after 3) Old Testament. Apocrypha pp. 1-84 (no page loss) New Testament pp. 116. Cropped fine at the head - less so to lower and leading fore-edges. This Bible rebound in a high Victorian leather binding with five raised bands to the spine, 'Holy Bible' in gilt to the spine and 'London 1576' to the tail. All edges gilt (Victorian) and marbled endpapers. Some rubbing to the board edges, joints and the head and tail of the spine. Some rubbing to the endpapers - most notably along the inner hinges - boards in no way tender. Original Victorian blue silk page divider present but detached. The Bible contains a number of charming woodblocks (one of what appears to be the ark), the parting of the red sea, including a half page map of the Holye Land, a half page map (mappe) of the Israelites 40 years in the wildnerness of Arabia before they reached the promised land (Numbers chapter 33). another map in Joshua (page 96) including some kind of seamonster or leviathan out to sea! It also includes the same woodblock to the Newe Testament page (Moses parting the waves) and a wood cut creast to the reverse of the New Testament title page and to the final page of Chrisopher Barkar's (Barker) patron - no lesser person than Sir Francis Walsingham. A tiger and a lamb enclosed within a frame and the motto: 'Tigre reo animale del. Adam Vecchio. Figlivolo - Merce L'evangelio - Fatto n'estat agnol'. There is some ink lines and very occasional marginalia to the text, though the Newe Testament title page both front and back and the final page have considerably more of it including what appear's to be three former owner's ink inscriptions and a little bit of arithmetics. There is occasional paper loss throughout mostly to corners with some loss of text (often paper repaired) though with notable loss to N.T. page 96 the apostle Paul's letter to Philemon. Some light finger soiling and light staining (with tidemarks) in places with some heavier soil marks/smudges in places. The odd tear though most paper tears have been repaired. Item Description: Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. This is the last Geneva Bible printed in England; produced five years after the first edition of the King James version, it brings to an end the printing of Puritan Bibles in that country and marks the close of the Geneva version's era of supremacy. This is a black-letter folio edition, illustrated with a handful of in-text woodcuts (including the Ark and its paraphernalia, and charts of consanguinity). The copy consists essentially of the Old Testament and some additional matter; it lacks two of the four preliminary leaves (including the title-page, publication information being provided by the colophon) and it also lacks the Apocrypha and New Testament. It begins with "Of the incomparable treasure of the holy Scriptures"; the "Briefe Table of the interpretation of the proper names which are chiefly found in the Olde Testament" and the "Table of the principall things that are conteined in the Bible, after the order of the Alphabet" are both present. Full later mottled calf, covers framed in double blind fillets and fleuron roll; spine with raised bands, blind-tooled compartment decorations, and gilt-stamped title and date; incomplete, with title-page, Apocrypha, and N.T. lacking. Front free endpaper with affixed slips documenting gift donation in 1955, and with inked annotation regarding date; back pastedown showing traces of now-absent pocket. Tattering to first leaves not reaching text, and first one with recent repairs, second one with area of loss to upper outer portion affecting a border and ten lines of text, third one with central tear (touching woodcut map) repaired some time ago with tape, four leaves each with short tear from lower margin without loss, one leaf with lower outer corner torn away with partial loss of shouldernotes and image caption, final index leaf with hole affecting six lines. Expectable sorts of age-toning, dust-soiling, and light spotting/staining, only; lower outer corners of first quarter waterstained (often faintly). In sum a survivor; "breeches" in Genesis underlined in ink. Bookseller Inventory # 000840

Item Description: Printed by Iohn Legat, printer for the Vniversitie of Cambridge, Cambridge, 1605. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition of Willetís ĎHexapla in Genesin,í an elaborate "six-fold" commentary on the Book of Genesis, promoting a spiritual transformation of the early English church. 2 books in one volume, folio (280 x 180mm). Pagination: [12], 205, 204-263, [5], 265-363, [7], 365-441, [3], 443-470, [4] p. Signatures: [par.](6); A-Y(6); Z-2A(6); 2B-2S(6); 2T(4). With a final errata leaf; the last leaf is blank. Woodcut ornament headpieces, chapter initials, few historiated initials with head of John the Baptist on charger. Separate divisional titles on 2A1r and 2I6r, with Legatís printerís device; pagination and register are continuous. Scattered early annotations and underscoring, especially to the printed marginalia, numbering and notations throughout completed by an eager student. Later English sheep, speckled edges; (some stains, some annotations trimmed close, otherwise good, a solid early English book). Pictorial bookplate of the Pacific School of Religion on pastedown, their rubber-stamp on front free endpaper. First edition, a second edition was enlarged in 1608. Andrew Willet (1562-1621), controversial Puritan divine, wrote Hexapla in Genesin which remains one of the weightiest biblical commentaries produced in English. Willet was especially active with his Puritan aims and dedicated this work to the newly enthroned Archbishop Bancroft and Bishop Vaughan of London. Recognizing his failure for appeals, Willetís dedicatory epistle was more conciliatory in tone although he urged for more tolerance and clemency given to Puritan reformers. Willetís method was distinct in its "six-fold" or, as he called it, "hexapla" approach to the text. His method consisted of an introductory "Analysis" or argument, an examination of the text and translations, a discussion of the interpretations, explanations and solutions which linked it to several other commentators, past and present, presentation of theological topics related to the text, a section for theological disputes, and finally, a homiletical application. Willetís tendency was to survey the history of Christian commentators and create the most significant contrasts between them. He was known to be instructive but almost the entire energy of his commentary is a refutation of Roman Catholic doctrine. He challenges such strongholds as the taking of Communion and suggested that angels took counterfeit bodies. Willet saw his work as getting back to the roots of biblical theology and he turned the text against the idle rich saying, "If Adam had not intended to live idly in Paradise much lesse should we spend our daies now in doing of nothing." Willet seems to be following Calvin emphasizing labors, love of God and greater physical and intellectual abilities. Bookseller Inventory # D8973
