Item Description: Indian Historian Press, San Francisco, 1979. Paperbound 8vo (about 9.75 inches tall) 155 pages. Notes, appendices. Description: Includes a few maps and black and white photo illustrations. From the author's foreword: ''Little is known, and less is understood of the genocide committed against the native people of California, particularly those of Northwestern California. Isolated from the cities, locked in a pocket of mountains and sea, where few could travel to learn the brutal facts, the truth about the genocide in a region 'Where Our Worlds Cried' remains unknown to this day. This book is an effort to uncover to the view of all, the facts of the most inhumane of all American tragedies. Once the miners and settlers fell upon the ordered world of the Northern California Indians, many of these unique societies were destroyed forever. The Lassics, Whilkuts, Sinkyones, Mattoles, and nearly all the Wiyots, were annihilated as a people and a culture in the final solution to the Indian problem by the representatives of a European white race who claimed superiority over all others. Those who were not brutally attacked were forced to leave their homes, their ancestor's graves and their cosmographic realms that defined and held them together as a people. They were sold into slavery or marched hundreds of miles to reserves that were the least desirable lands.'' The author is of Hupa-Cherokee ancestry, and was director of Ethnic Studies and Native American Studies programs at the Humboldt State University in northern California.
