The 1970 reissue of Betjeman?s most considered contribution to the literature of architecture, first published in 1933. The sprightliness of his prose style still appeals over sixty years later, and many, although not all, of his judgments are as valid today as then. It is curious to note that the country house of his first chapter is evidently on the outskirts of the Gloucestershire town of Tetbury, not far either in distance or in the imagination from that occupied today by the Prince of Wales. With an expanded introduction by Betjeman. 8vo. xxviii + (4) + 136 + (4)pp, with long folding illustration and errata slip. Original pink printed boards, cloth spine, in dustwrapper. Front free endpaper creased. Brian Housden?s copy.

FIRST EDITION. SECOND ISSUE. 8vo. 7.5 x 5.25 inches. xi + [i] + 186 + 3 pp. In quarter blue buckram over pink stiff card boards with black titles and printed paper label on spine (which is sunned). Errata slip tipped in and spare spine title label tipped in on rear pastedown. The required alteration of Nash to Smirke, p.102-3 is noted in the slip, but still stands uncorrected on the printed page. The reference to Mowbray in the poem on page 119 has been removed, indicating that this is a second state printing. Lower edge rough cut. A little wear to extremities, sunning of boards and occasional scattered foxing; otherwise a very good copy. Illustrated by table, 'The Growth of Good Taste' and folding panorama, The Street of Taste or the March of English Art down the Ages at end. Betjeman's attack on the recent architecture of his day, his second published, and first prose work. This is the second issue of the first edition as detailed above. The decline he perceives in architectural taste is well illustrated by the splendid panoramic plate, which ends with Byzantine Revival churches in red brick, suitable for garden cities, Egypto-Commercial-Renaissance style shops and offices, and jazz-modern super cinemas (whose survivors are now, ironically regarded as art deco masterpieces). The 'genealogical' table at the end contrasts good modern styles, e.g. William Morris, art nouveau, Voysey, Lutyens and Mackintosh with 'stagnant' architecture,' such as Sham Tudor Revival and most modern public architecture.
