Item Description: Macmillan, New York, 1936. First edition of the author's classic novel. Octavo, original gray cloth. Inscribed by Margaret Mitchell on the front free end paper. First printing, with "Published May 1936" on the copyright page and no mention of other printings. First issue dust jacket, with Gone with the Wind listed in the second column of the booklist on the back panel, with $3.00 cost on the front flap. Near fine in an excellent dust jacket that shows light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A bright copy without any restoration. In 1923, Margaret Mitchell became a feature writer for the Atlanta Journal, and in 1925, married John Marsh, a public relations officer for Georgia Power. She found most of her assignments unfulfilling, and she soon left to try writing fiction more to her own taste. Her own harshest critic, she would not try to get her work published. She began to write Gone with the Wind in 1926, while recovering from an automobile accident. Over the next eight years she painstakingly researched for historical accuracy. She accumulated thousands of pages of manuscript. Here is how she later described her life's labor: "When I look back on these last years of struggling to find time to write between deaths in the family, illness in the family and among friends which lasted months and even years, childbirths (not my own), divorces and neuroses among friends, my own ill health and four fine auto accidents . it all seems like a nightmare. I wouldn't tackle it again for anything. Just as soon as I sat down to write, somebody I loved would decide to have their gall-bladder removed. . " In 1934, an editor from Macmillan's Publishers came to Atlanta seeking new authors. He was referred to John and Margaret Marsh as people who knew Atlanta's literary scene. She steered him to several prospects, but didn't mention her own work. A friend told him that she was writing a novel, but she denied it. On the night before he was to leave Atlanta, she appeared at his hotel-room door with her still imperfect, mountainous manuscript and left it with him for better or for worse. "This is beyond doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best" (New York Times). Gone With the Wind is said to be the fastest selling novel in the history of American publishing (50,000 copies in a single day), and went on to win the Pulitzer Prize. Bookseller Inventory # 3295

Item Description: Macmillan Company, New York, 1936. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A very rare pre-publication copy of "Gone With the Wind" signed by Margaret Mitchell on an inserted leaf, and with two outstanding letters, typed and signed by her. The book was published by The Macmillan Company, New York, 1936. First edition, first issue, with May 1936 listed as the month of publication. Prior to the release of the May 1936 first edition, the publisher Macmillan had Margaret Mitchell sign 500 sheets. These sheets were bound into a small number of the first printings and then sent to select influential booksellers to help promote the novel. This copy was sent to bookseller correspondent Robert Saltmarsh, owner of "Hutchinson's Bookshop" in New Bedford, Massachusetts. The book has been professionally rebound in full tan cloth with new endpapers and leaves. The signed leaf is toned and soiled with a stain underneath the signature. There is an ownership legend (detailing ownership of the book by Mr. Saltmarsh) written in unknown hand in blue ball-point pen below Mitchell's signature. Tape remnants and residue markings (matching formerly tipped-in letters) are present on the front and back of the signed leaf, and on the half-title page with bleed through on the verso. This pre-publication edition signed by the author, along with the deeply personal and revealing letters written and signed by Margaret Mitchell make this a truly rare and special collection of "Gone With the Wind".The first letter was written in Atlanta, Georgia and was dated June 5, 1936 (just a month after publication of "Gone With the Wind"). The letter was typed on her personal stationery and measures approximately 7.75 x 7 inches. The letter expresses Mitchell's sincere gratitude to the bookseller Robert Saltmarsh for his "kind words" about the book and the true shock of the book's high-praised reception.Condition: The top edge of the letter has been unevenly trimmed. There are four horizontal creases from being placed in an envelope. There is also an affixed newspaper clipping and a tape marking on the verso. The letter has been placed in an archival plastic protector for protection and preservation. The second letter was also typed on her personal stationery, and is two quarto pages on two quarto leaves (only the first leaf has her name embossed on it). Measures approximately 10.75 x 7 inches. The letter was dated February 19, 1940 and tells of the whirlwind years since the publication of her novel and of the newly released "moving picture". Condition: Both pages of the second letter have two horizontal creases from being placed in an envelope. The upper corners of each page have been taped. Please contact us if you would like transcripts of the letters. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 000447

Item Description: Macmillan, New York, 1936. Book Condition: Fine. First edition. First printing, May 1936. A beautiful copy rebound in full green morocco with raised bands, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers and the original cloth bound in the rear. Internal contents are generally clean and fresh. Inscribed on the front end paper: "For Rose Harbaugh | Margaret Mitchell." Likely inscribed for Rose Oller Harbaugh who was the longtime manager of the book department at Marshall Fields department store in Chicago and who often sponsored book signings and other literary events. In all, a very handsome copy of this twentieth-century monolith; the basis for the critically acclaimed, 1939 film starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. Mitchell managed to create a book that was both an engaging romance (without being sentimental) as well as a sympathetic portrayal of the devastation to the Southern way of life in the wake of the Civil War. No other work of literature more fully captures the old Southern gentility than "Gone With the Wind." "This is beyond a doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer. It is also one of the best." (J. Donald Adams, New York Times Book Review July 5, 1936). Fine. Bookseller Inventory # 921

Margaret Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind" is a romance novel set in Georgia during the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era that followed. The novel centers on its protagonist, Scarlett O'Hara, and her struggle to rebuild and sustain her wealth, which had been lost as a result of the fall of the Confederacy. Using any means necessary, Scarlett regains what she has lost, in large part due to Rhett Butler, a scoundrel and scallawag with a bad reputation. The trials and tribulations of Scarlett and her unwavering perseverance make this novel an American classic. Winning a Pulitzer Prize in 1937, a year after it was first published, "Gone with the Wind" went on to become an Academy Award-winning film in 1939.
