Item Description: The Viking Press, New York, 1939. First issue, with "First Published in April 1939" on copyright page and first edition notice on front flap of dust jacket. Octavo, original beige cloth. Inscribed by the author, "For Jules and Joyce and also Joan with love John Steinbeck." Below his signature Steinbeck added his "Pigasus" drawing. The recipient, Jules Buck was a movie producer; he and Steinbeck made an early attempt toward a collaborative screenplay for what would become Elia Kazan's "Viva Zapata," though Steinbeck's contribution was such that he received sole credit. Buck produced such post-war film classics as Robert Siodmak's The Killers (based on the story by Ernest Hemingway), and Jules Dassin's The Naked City. His wife Joyce Gates was an actress and their daughter Joan became the editor of French Vogue. Steinbeck reserved his flying pig doodle for close friends and associates. Fine in a fine dust jacket with a tiny closed tear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional copy. "The Grapes of Wrath is the kind of art that's poured out of a crucible in which are mingled pity and indignation Its power and importance do not lie in its political insight but in its intense humanity [It] is the American novel of the season, probably the year, possibly the decade" (Clifton Fadiman). Item Description: The Viking Press (1939), New York, 1939. Hardcover. First Edition. Second Printing Before Publication of this winner of the Pulitzer Prize. This copy belonged to screenwriter Jerry Cady (A WING AND A PRAYER; LAURA; FOREVER AMBER; CALL NORTHSIDE 777) to whom the author has INSCRIBED and SIGNED this book. According to Cady's daughter, the two got into a huge argument at Murphy's bar one night about the book and Cady said that this kind of thing didn't go on in America. Steinbeck then INSCRIBED the book on the dedication page "To Jerry Cady/As far as I know it, this is what happens to them/John Steinbeck." This book shows some evidence that it was carried to Murphy's on more than one occasion. The exterior shows minor edgewear, mostly at the bottom edge. The front endpaper is mostly pasted down to the front pastedown, but what can be seen shows the ink stamp of the Boulevard Circulating Library on Hollywood Blvd. The half-title page has a few small tears, and there is an old dampstain on the outer margin edge of the first few pages, including the dedication page, but not touching the Steinbeck inscription. Accompanying the book are a few pages of Cady's scrapbook that includes family photos and photos of his boat, his driver's license and Twentieth Century Fox ID card, and the 8 November 1948 headline of the LOS ANGELES EXPRESS: "Screen Writer Dies in Mystery." Cady died from an overdose of sleeping pills on his yacht off Catalina Island. He was nominated for an Oscar in 1945 for his screenplay for A WING AND A PRAYER. A beautiful Steinbeck presentation in a Good only copy. Bookseller Inventory # 014780

Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1939. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First Printing. A Fine copy of the book, bright, clean and unread with a bright yellow top-stain. Dust jacket nearly Fine, just a trifle faded along the spine and with trivial creasing and wear a the crown and foot. Jacket with correct price of $2.75 and "First Edition" slug on the front flap. An excellent copy.Steinbeck';s classic account of the Dust Bowl and Depression era struggle of the Joad family, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a quintessential American classic. It would win both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize committee would refer to it as Steinbeck';s "epic chronicle" upon giving him the award in 1962. The book was the best selling novel of 1939 and became instantly controversial upon its release for its depiction of farmers and worker rights. Of course, "The Grapes of Wrath" was also adapted into the classic 1940 film, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, which was one of the first films selected by The Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. "It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 1138

Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1939. A splendid copy, bound in finely woven buckram cloth and stamped brightly in brown ink on the front boards and on the spine. Very clean and tight throughout with yellow topstaining. In a complete first edition dust jacket illustrated by Elmer Hader with the original price of $2.75 at the top of the front inside flap and "First Edition" in blue capital letters at the bottom of the flap. With some very light edge-wear and a touch of rubbing to the corners. There is also a small area of dampstain on the verso at the bottom of the spine, but it is not apparent when looking at the richly-colored art work. A superb, collector's copy of this modern classic and Pulitzer Prize-winning novel. Set during the Great Depression, The Grapes of Wrath focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, and changes in financial and agricultural industries. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies", they sought jobs, land, dignity, and a future. The Grapes of Wrath is frequently read in American high school and college literature classes due to its historical context and enduring legacy. A celebrated Hollywood film version, starring Henry Fonda and directed by John Ford, was made in 1940. First Edition with "First Published in April, 1939" on the copyright page and no subsequent printings listed. Bookseller Inventory # 196

First Edition of the great American novel of the American Depression, and the Nobel laureate's magnum opus, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and arguably one of the greatest novels of all time. Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1939. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. First Edition. First edition, first printing. Original publisher's cloth; dust jacket. Fine; in a bright, unclipped jacket with some light wear and some minor nicks to the spine and flap folds, spine very lightly faded, else a very attractive, near fine copy. In this powerful and compelling novel, Steinbeck tells the story of a poor "Okie" family, who travels to California after Oklahoma was decimated by the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Steinbeck's keen sense of human emotions and humanitarian interest in the plight of the tenant farmer make this novel a timeless masterpiece that provides unique insight into the history of the American Midwest. Symbolizing the novel's motifs of sacrifice and the American dream, The Grapes of Wrath takes its title from Julia War Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," whose lyrics reference the Biblical apocalypse and divine deliverance from oppression. The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award in 1939 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. It was also considered a major contributing factor in Steinbeck's 1962 awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Bookseller Inventory # JS048

This is the first printing of the first edition of John Steinbeck’s novel of the great depression of the1930s, THE GRAPES OF WRATH, published in 1939 by the Viking Press in New York. The dust jacket on this book is the original first edition dust jacket, with the “First Edition” slug on the lower corner of the front flap and the original price of $2.75 intact on the top of the same flap. The book itself is in very good to near fine condition. It has no marks within, the binding is tight, there is no chipping, tearing, or creasing of the spine ends, and the image on the covers and spine is fresh and crisp. The dust jacket shows some wear but is fundamentally sound. It is in good to very good condition. The image on the front panel, spine, and back panel is well preserved, and marred only by a few chips and creases where the dust jacket folds onto the front and rear panels. Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1939. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's beige cloth, boards illustrated with an image of migrant families heading West after Elmer Hader's dust jacket design, pictorial endpapers illustrated with a facsimile score for the "The Battle Hymn the Republic"; in the original first issue dust jacket, with the original ($2.75) price and "First Edition" slug intact, with an illustration by Hader depicting tenant farming families looking out on a caravan of migrant families heading West across a valley towards a mountain range. Very good, with a hint of wear and faint toning to the extremities, spotting to the top edge, otherwise bright and fresh pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light wear and rubbing to the extremities, minor chipping to the spine head, some toning to the spine, a hint of light rubbing to the folds, bright and clean pages. A clean and attractive copy. In this powerful and compelling novel, Steinbeck tells the story of a poor "Okie" family, who travels westward to California after their home state of Oklahoma was decimated by the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Steinbeck's keen sense of human emotion and humanitarian interest in the plight of the tenant farmer make this novel a classic and timeless masterpiece that provides a unique insight into the history of the American Midwest. Symbolizing the novel's motifs of sacrifice and the American dream, The Grapes of Wrath takes its title from Julia Ward Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," whose lyrics reference the Biblical apocalypse and divine deliverance from oppression. The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award in 1939 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. It was also considered a major contributing factor in Steinbeck's 1962 awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Bookseller Inventory # JS066
