Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1939. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. Tight, clean page block with a bright yellow top-stain. Dust jacket without chips, tears or wear, a lovely copy overall.Steinbeck's classic account of the Dust Bowl and Depression era struggle of the Joad family, "The Grapes of Wrath" is a quintessential American classic. It would win both the National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize and the Nobel Prize committee would refer to it as Steinbeck's "epic chronicle" upon giving him the award in 1962. The book was the best-selling novel of 1939 and became instantly controversial upon its release for its depiction of farmers and worker rights. Of course, "The Grapes of Wrath" was also adapted into the classic 1940 film, directed by John Ford and starring Henry Fonda, which was one of the first films selected by The Library of Congress for preservation in the United States National Film Registry. "It is a very long novel, the longest that Steinbeck has written, and yet it reads as if it had been composed in a flash, ripped off the typewriter and delivered to the public as an ultimatum." (Contemporary New York Times Review). Fine in Fine dust jacket. Bookseller Inventory # 1541

Item Description: Viking Press, New York, 1939. Hardcover. First edition. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award. The book was cited prominently when Steinbeck won the Nobel Prize in 1962. Set during the Great Depression, the novel focuses on the Joads, a poor family of tenant farmers driven from their Oklahoma home by drought, economic hardship, agricultural changes and bank foreclosures forcing tenant farmers out of work. Due to their nearly hopeless situation, and in part because they were trapped in the Dust Bowl, the Joads set out for California. Along with thousands of other "Okies," they sought jobs, land, dignity and a future. Basis for the John Ford directed film that starred Henry Fonda. A nearly fine copy of the author's masterpiece (small mark to the bottom of page ends) in a nearly fine dust jacket that has only the lightest of use. Bookseller Inventory # 12995

Item Description: New York: The Viking Press, 1939. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Included. 1st Edition. First edition, first printing. Publisher's beige cloth, boards illustrated with an image of migrant families heading West after Elmer Hader's dust jacket design, pictorial endpapers illustrated with a facsimile score for the "The Battle Hymn the Republic"; in the original first issue dust jacket, with the original ($2.75) price and "First Edition" slug intact, with an illustration by Hader depicting tenant farming families looking out on a caravan of migrant families heading West across a valley towards a mountain range. An exceptionally fine copy, with only a hint of offsetting to the endpapers, else bright and clean; unclipped dust jacket, with a very faint hint of toning to the spine, a few light traces of minor toning to the front panel, a hint of rubbing to the extremities. A striking copy completely free of repairs or restorations. Rare in such excellent condition. In this powerful and compelling novel, Steinbeck tells the story of a poor "Okie" family, who travels westward to California after their home state of Oklahoma was decimated by the Dust Bowl in the 1930's. Steinbeck's keen sense of human emotion and humanitarian interest in the plight of the tenant farmer make this novel a classic and timeless masterpiece that provides a unique insight into the history of the American Midwest. Symbolizing the novel's motifs of sacrifice and the American dream, The Grapes of Wrath takes its title from Julia Ward Howe's "The Battle Hymn of the Republic," whose lyrics reference the Biblical apocalypse and divine deliverance from oppression. The Grapes of Wrath won both the National Book Award in 1939 and the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1940. It was also considered a major contributing factor in Steinbeck's 1962 awarding of the Nobel Prize in Literature. Bookseller Inventory # JS076

Item Description: NY: Viking, (1939), 1939. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition of the great American novel of the American Depression, and the Nobel laureate's magnum opus, winner of the Pulitzer Prize, and arguably one of the greatest novels of all time. Basis, of course, for the classic 1940 John Ford Academy Award-winning film. Not a book to hold up terribly well, this copy is simply very good, yet in a much better than very good dust jacket. Not price-clipped, nor bearing the scarce First Edition slug, this copy, bearing the wonderfully pictorial bookplate of famed silent (and sound) screen star Monte Blue, remains exceedingly respectable and presentable. Item Description: Viking, 1939. Hardcover Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. 8vo - over 7.75" - 9.75" tall. A beautiful First Edition of John Steinbeck's classic work in a colorful and crisp first issue dustjacket. The book is in beige oatmeal cloth with dark brown designs and titling, and a gold/yellow topstain, and is in fine condition but for slight darkening to the spine, very minor, and natural toning to the page edges. The interior is clean and bright with "First Published in April 1939" on the copyright page. The first issue dustjacket is one of the nicest we have seen with "FIRST EDITION" on the corner of the front flap along with the original price ($2.75). The dustjacket is quite crisp and the colors bright although there is darkening to the spine, the front flap is separated from the front panel, the rear panel crease is partially split and other minor touches of wear. But the integrity of this wonderful dustjacket is preserved by the archival plastic cover. A lovely copy. This book is featured in the Parrish Books Premier Collection. Near Fine in Archival Plastic Cover. Bookseller Inventory # 3046
