Book Description: Oprah's Book Club, 2010. Trade Paperback. Book Condition: Near Fine. First Thus. First thus edition. Wrappers lightly toned. Decorative sticker in front matter. 2010 Trade Paperback. We have more books available by this author! 848 pp. "Two of the most beloved novels in all of English literature--together in one extraordinary volume. --A TALE OF TWO CITIES--After 18 years as a political prisoner in the Bastille, the aging Doctor Manette is finally released and reunited with his daughter in England. There the lives of the two very different men, Charles Darnay, an exiled French aristocrat, and Sydney Carton, a disreputable but brilliant English lawyer, become enmeshed through their love for Lucie Manette. From the tranquil roads of London, they are drawn against their will to the vengeful, bloodstained streets of Paris at the height of the Reign of Terror, and they soon fall under the lethal shadow of the guillotine.--GREAT EXPECTATIONS--A terrifying encounter with an escaped convict in a graveyard on the wild Kent marshes; a summons to meet the bitter, decaying Miss Havisham and her beautiful, cold-hearted ward Estella; the sudden generosity of a mysterious benefactor--these form a series of events that changes the orphaned Pip's life forever, and he eagerly abandons his humble origins to begin a new life as a gentleman. Dickens's haunting late novel depicts Pip’s education and development through adversity as he discovers the true nature of his 'great expectations.'". Bookseller Inventory # 1914207

Book Description: 1861. With Thirty-Four Illustrations from original drawings by John McLenan. Printed from the manuscript and early proof-sheets purchased from the author, for which Charles Dickens has been paid in cash, the sum of one thousand pounds sterling. Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson & Brothers, n.d. [1861]. 6 pp undated ads [with Great Expectations not yet listed]. Original blind-stamped black cloth with spine vignette in gilt. First Illustrated American Edition -- in fact the first illustrated edition anywhere -- being Peterson's illustrated octavo issue. It was actually Harper who paid Dickens (as noted on the title page, above) for advance sheets; they then ran it in Harper's Weekly. They sold the book rights to Peterson of Philadelphia, who published it in July in several of his Dickens "library" series -- one of which was this illustrated octavo edition. John Gregory of New York did not publish GREAT EXPECTATIONS until September -- though his Library of Congress deposit may have preceded Harper's (who was notoriously lax in this regard).~The illustrations in this 266-page volume are separate plates; generally, for each Dickens title the first Peterson library edition to come out was the unillustrated one in wrappers, followed by a printing with separate plates (as here), followed by a printing with the illustrations integrated into the text. The illustrations for these Peterson editions of GREAT EXPECTATIONS are of much greater interest than those for other Dickens novels: because the first English edition was not illustrated, these illustrations by John McLenan constitute the first illustrations for this tale.~This copy is in good-plus condition, with some wear at the extremities (as usual), but still with the original endpapers and with only light foxing on the text leaves and plates). Smith (American Dickens) pp 375-376; also see Podeschi (Yale) A147 and D25. Bookseller Inventory # 12585
