Condition: Near fine in very good jacket. First edition, first state of this spellbinding read-aloud masterpiece. Seuss's knockout success with limited-vocabulary stories for beginning readers, especially CAT IN THE HAT, led his publisher Bennett Cerf to offer a wager: 50 dollars that Seuss couldn't create a children's book using only 50 words. Composing GREEN EGGS AND HAM was a trial that went far beyond Cerf's fifty-dollar bet. According to biographer Brian Jay Jones, Seuss "would rise to meet Cerf's challenge - and it was probably not entirely a coincidence that the central plot point of the resulting book was all about convincing someone to do something he didn't really want to do." The outcome was the best-selling Dr. Seuss book of all time. This copy comes directly from the stock of Aleph-Bet Books, the firm of Seuss bibliographers Helen Younger and Marc Younger. 9'' x 6.25''. Original orange glazed pictorial boards. In original unclipped (195/195) color pictorial dust jacket. With "50 Word Vocabulary" statement applied as a sticker. 62 pages. Jacket with 3/4'' chip to head of spine, shallow edgewear, light soil. Book with light bumping; interior clean and bright.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. First Edition, First Printing. 62, [4] pages. Illustrated endpapers. Color illustrations. DJ has wear and tears. Note that on the first edition of Green Eggs and Ham, the front dust jacket cover must have the blurb '50 Word Vocabulary' as a sticker. The sticker is essential to identification as a first edition. Second and later printings have '50 Word Vocabulary' printed on the front dust jacket cover. This dust jacket has '50 Word Vocabulary' as a sticker!!! Both book and dust jacket are first issues, with statement that the book is Distributed by Random House, not published by Random House. Theodor Seuss Geisel (1904 -1991) was an American children's author, cartoonist, illustrator, poet, animator, and filmmaker. He is known for writing and illustrating more than 60 books under the pen name Dr. Seuss. His work includes many of the most popular children's books of all time, selling over 600 million copies and being translated into more than 20 languages. Geisel adopted the name "Dr. Seuss" as an undergraduate at Dartmouth College. He began his career as an illustrator and cartoonist for Vanity Fair, Life, and other publications. He worked as an illustrator for advertising campaigns, most notably for Standard Oil, and as a political cartoonist for the New York newspaper PM. He published his first children's book And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street in 1937. During World War II, he illustrated political cartoons, and he worked in the animation and film department of the Army where he wrote, produced or animated many productions including Design for Death, which later won the 1947 Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. After the war, Geisel returned to writing children's books, writing classics like If I Ran the Zoo (1950), Horton Hears a Who! (1955), The Cat in the Hat (1957), How the Grinch Stole Christmas! (1957), Green Eggs and Ham (1960), One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish (1960), The Sneetches (1961), The Lorax (1971), The Butter Battle Book (1981), and Oh, the Places You'll Go (1990). His books have spawned numerous adaptations, including 11 television specials, five feature films, a Broadway musical, and four television series. Geisel won the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award in 1958 for Horton Hatches the Egg and again in 1961 for And to Think That I Saw It on Mulberry Street. Geisel's birthday, March 2, has been adopted as the annual date for National Read Across America Day, an initiative on reading created by the National Education Association. He also received two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Children's Special for Halloween is Grinch Night (1978) and Outstanding Animated Program for The Grinch Grinches the Cat in the Hat (1982). Green Eggs and Ham is a children's book by Dr. Seuss, first published on August 12, 1960. Green Eggs and Ham is one of Seuss's "Beginner Books", written with very simple vocabulary for beginning readers. The vocabulary of the text consists of just 50 words and was the result of a bet between Seuss and Bennett Cerf, Dr. Seuss's publisher, that Seuss (after completing The Cat in the Hat using 236 words) could not complete an entire book without exceeding that limit. The 50 words are a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs, fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house, I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse, not, on, or, rain, Sam, say, see, so, thank, that, the, them, there, they, train, tree, try, will, with, would, you. The book has become sufficiently ingrained in the cultural consciousness that U. S. District Court Judge James Muirhead referenced Green Eggs and Ham in his September 21, 2007, court ruling after receiving an egg in the mail from prisoner Charles Jay Wolff who was protesting against the prison diet. Muirhead ordered the egg destroyed and rendered his judgment in the style of Seuss. Senator Ted Cruz read the book on the floor of the United States Senate during his filibuster over the funding of Obamacare.

First edition of this spellbinding read-aloud masterpiece, in second-state dust jacket. "50 Word Vocabulary" printed on jacket, not a sticker. Color pictorial endpapers, and illustrated in color throughout. 62 pages. A couple bumps to boards, one faintly affecting text at upper corner. Jacket with a closed tear to rear panel and some light wear to spine ends: shows very well. Very good plus in very good plus jacket.

Hardcover. Condition: Very good-. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. First Edition. Large octavo, 62pp., illustrated. Just about very good in the publisher's printed boards. Some rubbing to the bottom edges, as often, with a tiny stress crack at one corner. Two owner's names erased on the front paste-down, and the erasure has slightly discolored that area of the yellow endpapers. In the rare first-issue dust jacket, bearing the 195/195 price, and which has very evident sticker ghost below the printed "I can read it all by myself" design (the first issue had a sticker which read "50 word vocabulary." While that sticker is missing here, the ghost is evidence that it was once here. Besides, in later issues, the publisher simply printed the sticker design on the dust jacket.) Jacket in very good condition, with some short closed tears, mild creasing, and shallow wear to the spine ends; less than is often seen. Uncommon true first printing of this landmark book by Dr. Seuss, which has never gone out of print. Random House's publisher, Bennet Cerf, had bet Seuss that he couldn't write a whole children's book with just 50 words, and Seuss met the challenge with "Green Eggs and Ham." Younger and Hirsch, pp. 75-76.

Pictorial Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition/First Printing. First printing possesses all points in Younger 'First Editions of Dr. Seuss.' An amazingly bright, tight and nice copy, both book and jacket. It has these small flaws: owner had neatly adhered front and rear jacket flaps to pastedowns with scotch tape, about 1.25 inches. Tape has been removed, remnants remain but do not badly detract. Owner address label removed from first endpaper, under this area is a small neat owner name and phone number. Again, an incredible nearly new-looking copy. This is NOT the extremely rare first issue with the 50 Word Vocabulary sticker glued to book.

Condition: Very good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very good. First edition. First edition, second issue (with 50 Word Vocabulary printed on the cover, not on a sticker). First edition with "Distributed by Random House" stated on title page and on back panel of jacket. All later printings referred to Beginner Books as a Division of Random House, not "Distributed By". Very good in a very good dust jacket with the original price (195/195) still on the front flap. Seuss wrote this book when he promised his publisher he could write a funny and charming book with only a 50 word vocabulary. It revolutionized early reader books, which until this book had been typically and humorlessly about Dick and Jane. It is now a classic, often chosen by celebrities and dignitaries when they visit kindergarten classes to read to the children.
