Item Description: Constable & Co, London, 1909. First edition. One of approximately thirty copies of the deluxe limited edition that were reserved for presenation. This one signed and dated November 23, 1909. Also included is a letter from Rackham on stationary with his address in green font: "16, Chalcot Gardens, South Hampstead. N.W." "26 Aug. '09 | Dear Sir, A few years ago you bought a drawing of mine (of an old woman with horses behind - ) that had been reproduced in black & white as an illustration to Grimm's Fairy Tales. I am now bringing out another edition with the illustrations better reproduced, & in colours and am writing to ask whether you will be so kind as to lend the original drawing, so that fresh reproductions can be made. The publishers (Messrs. Constable & Co.) will be glad to send you a copy of the edition de luxe of the book when it comes out in the autumn, & I need hardly say that every care will be taken of the drawing which will be insured for whatever value you place on it. If you will be so very kind as to lend it to us, I will see that it is returned as soon as the new reproduction has been made which will probably take about 3 weeks. [unintelligible closing] Arthur Rackham." On a separate piece of stationary is: "with Mr. Arthur Rackham's Compliments & thanks," also in Rackham's hand. An official "Certificate of Posting" is tipped onto a blank side of the stationary. Unfortunately, the original artwork that formed the basis of the request is not included with the book. Nonetheless, Rackham's ink is plentiful and the association is interesting. The vellum covers are generally soiled and it is lacking the silk ties. Internally, the book is in excellent condition and complete with all 40 color illustrations tipped in.The collection of classic fairy tales, brought to life by one of the world's most foremost book illustrators. The Brothers Grimm collection of stories was first published in 1812, with 86 stories. The Brothers collected their tales from numerous sources, from paupers to aristocrats, and then edited and rewrote the stories as they were anthologizing them.Arthur Rackham was one of the great illustrators of the early 20th century, a period which is referred to as the "golden age" in British book design. His works were produced in both limited and mass market editions as there was a large market for ornately illustrated books before the First World War. Rackham used a unique style, thought to mix European and East Asian influences, that involved both pen and India Ink as well as watercolor. His work was displayed all over Europe - and received awards at International Exhibitions in Milan and Barcelona and Rackham would influence heavily many illustrators, especially those of children's books, who came after him. "Rackham's illustrations to Grimm, Hans Andersen or Poe show him at his most imaginative and observant of human nature, while his gnomes, fairies and gnarled anthropomorphic trees in Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens or A Midsummer Night's Dream represent his more fantastic side. He was - and remains - a soloist in front of an orchestra, a player with the responsibility to interpret and add a personal lustre to great works with variations of infinite subtlety and grace." ["Arthur Rackham: A Life with Illustration," by James Hamilton, Pavilion Books, Ltd., London, 1990]. Bookseller Inventory # 1143

Item Description: London: Freemantle & Co. / Philadelphia: J. B. Lippincott Co., 1900. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. First American edition, n. d. [1900]; 6" x 8"; pp. [4], v-xvii, [1], 1-464; original pictorial boards; deckled fore-edge; gilt top edge; minor fading to boards; some rubbing to tips of spine (small closed cut to bottom edge); slight vertical line through front cover; pages mostly very clean with a few faint spots of foxing limited to first and last several pages; illustrated with color fronts and 100 b & w full-page illustrations; very good or better. "A New Translation by Mrs. Edgar Lucas." The original Rackham-illustrated "Grimm's Fairy Tales," which brought Arthur Rackham his enormous fame and prompted the publishing of the 1909 deluxe signed edition. The great illustrator himself pointed out in the 1909 edition's prefatory note: "Some years ago a selection of "Grimm's Fairy Tales" with one hundred illustrations of mine in black and white was published - in 1900, by Messrs. Freemantle and Co., and afterwards by Messrs. Archibald Constable & Co., Ltd. At intervals since then I have been at work on the original drawings, partially or entirely re-drawing some of them in colour, adding new ones in colour and in black and white, and generally overhauling them as a set, supplementing and omitting, with a view to the present edition. Of the forty coloured illustrations, many are elaborations of the earlier black and white drawings or are founded on them. The frontispiece, and those facing pp. 34, 70, 94, 104, 116, 118, and 190 are entirely new, and several of the text illustrations also have not been published before. The remaining illustrations in the text have been reconsidered and worked on again to a greater or lesser degree.". Bookseller Inventory # 000144

Item Description: Doubleday, Page & Company, New York, 1909. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. Rackham, Arthur (illustrator). First Edition. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book has been painstakingly reassembled from original parts. Book has been rebacked in cloth, but most of original leather spine (featuring gilt lettering and Rackham illustrations) has been preserved and is glued over cloth. Spine leather is slightly darkened from consolidation/restoration process and is still a bit fragile. Book has been rehinged, keeping virtually all of Rackham-illustrated endpapers; Japanese tissue is barely visible deep in gutters of endpapers. 1" X 4.5" strip of rear pastedown endpaper has been reattached, but is yellowed from storage with spine. The fore-edges of the half-title and the rear free endpaper are worn and have been reinforced with Japanese tissue. For many years the spine was stored in various parts of book, (between the half-title and opposing reverse of front free endpaper, between pp. 184-185, and between the rear free endpaper and opposing page) yellowing the pages where it was stored. Four other pages have been yellowed from storage of newspaper articles. All tipped-in, color illustrations and tissue guards are present, but the corner of one tissue guard is torn, two of the color illustrations have creased corners, and one color illustration has a small chip missing from corner. The book has occasional, mild foxing; slight age toning to pages, which is more noticeable in margins; wear to edges of green-paper-covered boards; worn corners to boards; and light soiling and wear to green paper on boards. Photos available upon request. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 008271

It is said, also, that Arthur Rackham kept the fairy world alive for children in the twentieth century! Here is a splendid combination of the two~the best loved Grimms' fairy tales, adorned by an artist who was a master of fantasy. Wilhelm and Jacob Grimm assembled their collection of folklore over a period of many years. Published in three volumes from 1812 to 1824, the Nursery and Household Tales brought to the world not just entertainment, but an important account of the culture of the past. This collection includes the most familiar as well as the most charming of the tales. The Golden Bird, for example, tells how a young man is blessed by listening to the advice of a lowly fox. The Wren and the Bear tells of a war in the woods~all four~footed creatures against the winged ones! The Goosegirl is really a princess in disguise. And we all know about Hansel and Grethel, who, left alone in the forest, daringly outwit the wicked old witch! Rapunzel, Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, Tom Thumb . they're all here. And so are Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty, but here they are called Ashenputtel and Briar Rose. It's a rich and wonderful reunion. Arthur Rackham's illustrations for the Brothers Grimm brought him lasting fame. They rank with those he did for Peter Pan in Kensington Gardens, The Wind in the Willows, and Alice in Wonderland as classics of book illustration. From the beautiful to the bizarre, from the weird to the wonderful, his fine line drawings are striking portrayals of the Grimm stories. Dark colors and facial contortions arouse terror, starlight and fairies enchant, and faces in trees quite frequently amuse! Gnarled branches and briars speak of the evil surrounding Hansel and Grethel. Deep and somber tones utter the sadness of the Seven Dwarfs as they see Snowdrop lying on the ground. And a hilarious little king, unable to control his emotion, exudes mirth in Briar Rose. Timeless as entertainment, each tale is a rare jewel, which, combined with the artistry of Arthur Rackham, adds its special value to this story time treasury. Bookseller Inventory # 3071402
