Item Description: 1961. Folio. 2 vols.; original dark red buckram, spines lettered in gilt; a complete colour facsimile taken from a finely illuminated copy; each volume in its original cloth-covered fall-down-back box; a very nice copy. Limited to 1,000 copies. Colophon: "This is the first Gutenberg facsimile ever printed in the United States and only the second in the world. The reproduction derives from the Insel Verlag edition which was based on the copy in the Koniglichen Bibliothek in Berlin and the copy in the Standischen Landesbibliothek in Fulda, considered by authorities to be the most beautifully illuminated of the 47 copies known to exist. The text pages have been printed by lithography and the illuminated pages by sheet-fed gravure. The paper used is 100 per cent rag content made especially for this book." The 42-line Bible printed by Gutenberg was apparently begun about 1450-2 and completed about 1456. The two volumes consist of 643 folio 2-column leaves, and it is thought that thirty-five copies were printed on parchment and 165 on paper; of this total only forty-eight are known. Item Description: Cooper Square. Pageant Books, 1961. No Binding. Book Condition: Good. Complete Portfolio with 7 full color facsimile leaves. The Cooper Square/Pageant Books facsimile of the Gutenberg Bible was published in 1961. It is an extraordinary and beautiful facsimile of Gutenburg's original. When it was issued as a high-end limited edition set, the publisher seems to have issued 4 separate portfolios with example of the leaves. There were issued in quite limited quantities as well. This portfolio contains full color, full size pages from St. Matthew, Tobit, Job, Joshua, Baruch, John and Psalms. Each page measures about 12 x 18 inches. Wide margins, full color printing and illumination. Some have some dogears at the corners and some fading at the edges, but it would all be covered with any effort to frame them, as the damage is limited to the outermost edges. There is a 4 page explanatory insert with information about the Gutenberg Bible and the facsimile. On the back, the contents of the 4 Portfolios are listed. There is a small pencil checkmark by Portfolio One (this one). I cannot find other copies of this portfolio (or any of them) for sale, so it's possible that they never produced Portfolio's 2, 3, and 4. The facsimile pages are photogravures, made on 100% rag paper. The portfolio they are housed in is maroon cloth over stiff boards, with JG blindstamped on the front. The boards have a large area (6 x 3 inches) where the maroon cloth has peeled off (or something stuck to it) leaving that area discolored. General scuffing and wear to the portfolio, which has protected the pages all these years. There is no date printed on any of this material, but I have assumed it is 1961 because that's when the Pageant/Cooper Facsimile was published. Please email with questions or to request photos. This is an oversized book, so extra shipping may be required for international or priority shipping. Bookseller Inventory # Fred-Z110
