Book First Edition
Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Hard Rain Falling by Don Carpenter. First Ballantine mass market paperback edition, first printing. . Don Carpenter s first book published in 1966 and perhaps the novel for which he is most well know. His novels were not read, at the time, by wide audiences and to support himself he wrote screenplays in Hollywood including the Rip Torn Film, Payday which was filmed in 1972. Carpenter s books depicted the seedy, marginal characters, such as pool sharks, criminals, drug dealers, and taken from his time in Hollywood, movie moguls. Critics and writers alike, praised his work and he was best friends with fellow writer Richard Brautigan, who tragically took his own life in 1984. Eerily, Carpenter would himself, commit suicide after facing increasing illness and debilitating health issues in 1995. . More recently, there has been a resurgence of interest in his body of work and most notably, this novel, his first. . . First Edition Signed
First edition of the author's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a few small closed tears. Books signed by Carpenter are rare. Don Carpenterâ s Hard Rain Falling is a tough-as-nails account of being down and out, but never down for goodâ "a Dostoyevskian tale of crime, punishment, and the pursuit of an ever-elusive redemption. â Hard Rain Falling is a unique read; violent, tender, inexorable, and melancholic; a beat-era book of disaffected young men devoid of On the Road euphoria but more poignant and gripping for its fatalistic grounding. The small lives contained herein are indelible" (Richard Price).
