Item Description: P.F. Collier and Son, 1909. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Harvard Classics - Complete 51 Volume Set (1909-10) First Edition, Very Good Condition. Copyright by P.F. Collier and Son (New York): Volume 1-25 are from 1909, Volume 26-50 from 1910, and the Lecture Volume from 1914. The covers are very thin and should be considered as a softcover set. Please note that many of the softcovers are not perfectly uniform or straight like a hardcover of this set might be. Very Dark Green covers that appear to be Black. Top textblock edge has a gilt finish, along with gilt text on the spine but some of the gilt is speckling in areas. Also, there are some volumes with light speckles of gilt on the covers. Textblocks are tanned, some are flat or inverted from a normal bow shape of a textblock, and most are very stiff to flip through the pages. The inner pastedowns are a light green and white illustrative decoration. All of the books have varying degrees of wear to the covers from scratches, bumped corners, edge and shelf wear, small chips and nicks to book edges, a few spots and speckles to the covers, frayed headbands, and some spotting on the spines. A few item specifics on each volume - There are a few volumes that are starting to crack, particularly at the first signature, which is approximately page 30, but none that are detaching; from what we could see those include volumes: 10 (last page), 14, 16, 32 (rear hinge), 34, 36, 42 (after the front endpaper). To a lesser degree some volumes have hard creases, such as page 506 of volume 41, and at the first signature of volume 29, 33, 44. Volume 9 has a nick on the front cover near the top edge. Volume 15 has a nick on the side of the textblock and spotting on the bottom textblock near the spine. Volume 45 has a wrinkled half-title and title page. Rear cover of volume 46 has a wrinkle. "Lectures" volume has spine lean and a crack at the first signature, this volume likely has the most wear of any in the set. The books are free of writing or markings, many of the volumes appear to be unread. Taking in consideration the softcover and their age, these books as a set are in Very Good condition. Please see the photos to gauge your own opinion on their condition or feel free to ask for more pictures. Lastly, this bookset will ship in 1-2 large boxes and require a signature upon delivery. This is a spectacular set for those wanting a must-have for your book collection and bookshelf!. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-18523754348

Item Description: P.F. Collier and Son, 1909. Soft cover. Book Condition: Poor. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Harvard Classics - Complete 51 Volume Set (1909-10) First Edition, 51 Volumes feature Copyright by P.F. Very Dark Green covers that are nearly black. **This set has a dozen and a half volumes with prior exposure to book worms on the bottom textblock and pastedowns, please read description fully.** Top textblock edge has a gilt finish, along with gilt text on the spine but some of the gilt is wearing/speckling/fading thin in areas. Also, there are some volumes with light speckles of gilt from either rubbing off or from application. Textblocks are tanned, some are flat or inverted from a normal bow shape of a textblock, and most are very stiff to flip through the pages. The inner pastedowns are a light green and white illustrative decoration. All of the books have varying degrees of wear to the covers from scratches, bumped corners, edge and shelf wear, frayed headbands, and some spotting on the spines. There are a few volumes that are cracked with the only volume with significant detachment being Volume 1; by far it has the most wear and abuse of all 51 volumes. Additionally, the following volumes were exposed at some point in their life to bookworms (the estate these came from did not have other sets or books with similar issues nor did the surrounding bookshelves): Volumes 1, 2, 7, 8, 11, 15, 16, 20, 32-39, 41, 44, and Lectures. Volumes in the thirties (32-39) and volume 1 have the most noticeable damage, particularly in the corners of the textblock, while the other volumes show minimal signs. From a brief flip through of each volume, the books appear to be free of writing or markings, many of the volumes appear to be unread. Taking in consideration their age, the various volumes with small binding cracks, as well as the bookworm issue within select volumes, this bookset is listed in Poor/Acceptable condition. Without the bookworm problem, this set would easily be rated two grades higher, but alas. Please see the photos to gauge your own opinion on their condition or feel free to ask for more pictures. Lastly, this bookset will ship free in two large boxes and require a signature upon delivery. For the amount of wear and issues, this is a hard-to-find set for those wanting a must-have first edition bookset at a value price. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-18279086167

The definitive Harvard Classics collection, also known as the Five-Foot Shelf of Books, is a monument to the world's great works of literature and history, and has been eagerly collected since it was first published in 1909. An ".anthology of classic works from world literature, compiled and edited by Harvard University president Charles W. Eliot that was first published in 1909. Eliot, then President of Harvard University, had stated in speeches that the elements of a liberal education could be obtained by spending 15 minutes a day reading from a collection of books that could fit on a five-foot shelf. (Originally he had said a three-foot shelf.) The publisher P. F. Collier and Son saw an opportunity, and challenged him to make good on this statement by selecting an appropriate collection of works; the Harvard Classics was the result. Eliot worked for one year together with William A. Neilson, a professor of English; Eliot determined the works to be included and Neilson selected the specific editions and wrote introductory notes. Each volume had 400 to 450 pages or so; and the included texts are "so far as possible, entire works or complete segments of the world's written legacies."
