Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 1955 FIRST PRINTING of the UK First Edition. Original navy boards with gilt lettering spine. SIGNED by the author, "E. P. Hillary", and SIGNED by Hillary's longtime rope-mate and 1953 Everest workhorse team member, George Lowe, on the short-title page. Lowe was Hillary's rope-mate on many climbs (before & after Everest) and he was the 1953 Everest team member who led the carry to the highest camp above the South Col in support of the summit climb. Other than the author, George Lowe has a bigger role in this book than any other climber. Hillary dedicated this book to George Lowe (and 3 other climbers). First editions of this book signed by both Hillary and Lowe are very uncommon, especially in nice condition. CONDITION: The book is in very good condition with a few light marks to covers but overall quite clean, usual fading to spine (very common for this book), no previous owner names or marks or writing on any pages (other than the signatures of Hillary and Lowe), tight binding, bright clean pages with no foxing (foxing on pages is common for this book), 100% complete. Original dust jacket has light soiling (not bad), minor professional restorations to spine ends (small loss rebacked and colored to match original, original printed price still present on front flap corner. The book measures 209mm tall x 136mm, and has 256 photos, 1 color & 67 b/w photos, 7 maps, several nice sketches. PHOTOS ARE OF THE ACTUAL BOOK BEING OFFERED. Signed by Author(s).

First British edition of Hillary's account of his ascent of Everest. Octavo, original blue cloth, with maps by A. Sparks and sketches by George Djurkouic. Boldly signed by the author in a contemporary hand on the front free endpaper, "E.P. Hillary." Near fine in a very good dust jacket. In 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay stared into its dark eye and did not waver. On May 29, they pushed spent bodies and aching lungs past the achievable to pursue the impossible. At a terminal altitude of 29,028 feet, they stood triumphant atop the highest peak in the world. With nimble words and a straightforward style, New Zealand mountaineering legend Hillary recollects the bravery and frustration, the agony and glory that marked his Everest odyssey. From the 1951 expedition that led to the discovery of the Southern Route, through the grueling Himalayan training of 1952, and on to the successful 1953 expedition led by Colonel John Hunt, Hillary conveys in precise language the mountain's unforgiving conditions. In explicit detail he recalls an Everest where chaotic icefalls force costly detours, unstable snow ledges promise to avalanche at the slightest misstep, and brutal weather shifts from pulse-stopping cold to fiendish heat in mere minutes. In defiance of these torturous conditions, Hillary remains enthusiastic and never hesitates in his quest for the summit. Despite the enormity of his and Norgay's achievement, he regards himself, Norgay, and the other members of his expedition as hardworking men, not heroes. And while he never would have reached the top without practiced skill and technical competence, his thrilling memoir speaks first to his admiration of the human drive to explore, to understand, to risk, and to conquer.

Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. High Adventure by Sir Edmund Hillary. Published by Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1955, FIRST EDITION, first printing. SIGNED E P HILLARY on half-title page, no owner inscriptions. Good hardback with jacket. Blue cloth boards have some minor marks, and a little fading and compression to spine ends, gilt titles are dulled down, some small dents to front cover. Binding tight, pages tanned with light scattered foxing throughout - mainly at edges. Jacket is in a very good, bright condition. It is not price clipped (16s net). It is rubbed at folds with a little chipping at edges; minor marks. 225 pages with b&w photos. Everest forbidding, exhilarating, unconquerable. All courageous attempts by man to reach its summit by heading up the northern side from Tibet had failed. The southern approach through Nepal had never before been climbed, due to its impossibly steep ice-covered slopes and the country's policies. But in 1951 Edmund Hillary joined an expedition to find a new route up Everest from the south, which led to a new chapter in mountaineering history. The climbers' determination, endurance and battle against the elements culminated with their famous climb in 1953 as they finally reached the summit of this formidable mountain. This is Hillary's own account of the treacherous and breathtaking journeys.
