These fascinating stories proceeded in parallel, unrelated fashion for hundreds of years until the last decades of the nineteenth century. At about that time, the first appreciation was gained of the necessity for rocket propulsion to achieve man's ancient, hitherto unattainable dream of flight into space. ~ .I know of no comparable reference work which documents rocket flight in such detail, contains as many references, or presents so many fine photographs and illustrations of past and current events. The authors have endeavored to encompass and present in a lucid fashion the hundreds of elements of this history and have succeeded admirably. Much is presented comprehensively for the first time in a single volume and the work promises to be an important standard reference." (from the introduction).
