The Holy Bible, containing the Old and New Testaments: Newly Translated out of the Original Tongues, and with the Former Translations Diligently Compared and Revised, By His Majesty's Special Command being 'The King James Bible. First edition printedby Eyre and Strahan, Printers to the King's Most Excellent MajestyIn two volumes complete. The Authorised Version, commonly known as the King James Version, King James Bible, KJB, or KJV, is an English translation of the Christian Bible by the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611. First printed by the King's Printer Robert Barker, this was the third official translation into English. The first was the Great Bible commissioned by the Church of England in the reign of King Henry VIII, and the second was the Bishop's Bible of 1568. In January 1604, King James VI of Scotland and I of England convened the Hampton Court Conference where a new English version was conceived in response to the perceived problems of the earlier translations as detected by the Puritans, a faction within the Church of England. William Strahan (1715 - 1785) was a Scottish printer and publisher, and a Member of Parliament. Strahan was originally apprenticed to an Edinburgh printer but became a Master Printer in London. In 1738 he was made a Freeman of the City of London and a freeman of the Stationers' Company. Diversifying from printing to publishing, he built up a highly important and successful business, at one time employing 50 men. He was Samuel Johnson's chief publisher, being entrusted with the printing of Johnson's Dictionary, and also published the works of the philosophers David Hume and Adam Smith, and the historian Edward Gibbon. From 1770, he was Printer to the King (George III). Previous owner's ink inscription to front blank. Condition: In contemporary crushed morocco binding. Item Description: Mack, 2013. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. First Edition, First Printing. Mack, 2013. Softcover. First edition, First Printing. 768pp., 654 color illustrations, 6-1/2x8-1/2". Book Condition: New/Fine. From publisher: For their most recent work, Holy Bible, Adam Broomberg and Oliver Chanarin mined this archive with philosopher Adi Ophir’s central tenet in mind: that God reveals himself predominantly through catastrophe and that power structures within the Bible correlate with those within modern systems of governance. The format of Broomberg and Chanarin’s illustrated Holy Bible mimics both the precise structure and the physical form of the King James Version. By allowing elements of the original text to guide their image selection, the artists explore themes of authorship, and the unspoken criteria used to determine acceptable evidence of conflict. Inspired in part by the annotations and images Bertolt Brecht added to his own personal bible, Broomberg and Chanarin’s publication questions the clichés at play within the visual representation of conflict. Item Description: The American Wringer Co., New York, 1892. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1892 Ed. 10 x 12 x 4.5". Leather-bound 15 lb. Bible published by the American Wringer Co. 1891+ (not dated). Front and back boards are sculpted leather and exhibit 12 different impressed, gilded Biblical scenes. Decorated working pewter latches.Elaborate panelled gilt-trimmed spine with 6 raised bands, unblemished gilt on page block edges. 1338 pp plus indexes, Concordances, and Psalms of David in metre. Several multipage sections of art, Steel plate panoramas, four 2-sided colored map plates, 20 colored plates; additional plates were perforated for removal; several remain including a Family Temperance Pledge. Back sections for family photos. Stated on Title page: "This comprehensive and critical history of all the books of the holy Bible contains a concise account of each book, giving the circumstances under which they were written, the names of the writers, the period of time covered and a short synopisis of the prominent events recorded in each book. Compiled expressively for this edition from the writings of William Smith, LL Ed." Other than the temporary plates designed to be removed from the volume, this Bible is in almost perfect condition: the leather is rubbed around the obvious places--top outer edges of top and tail, prominent edges. Curiously, the gilt-decorated 3/8" thick board edges show no rubbing or loss of decoration. Front & back paste downs and eps are intact. Two extra eps in the front designed to cover the hinge construction have lost the glue (a fixable blemish), revealing the intact heavy linen thread used to support the page block and hinges. This book is a masterpiece of binding combining strength and beauty. Additional pictures available on request. Cost of shipping to be computed by weight and destination. 10 x 12 x 4.5". Item Description: [by J. Brettell] for J. Hatchard and Son, London, 1824. First Edition. 8vo. [220 x 133 x 14 mm]. [3]ff, 111, [1] pp. Bound in contemporary purple straight-grained goatskin, the covers tooled in blind with a wide border of repeated palmette arabesque and anthemion tools, fillets and a chain roll. The spine divided into five panels with thick blind tooled bands, lettered in the second panel in gilt, the others tooled in blind with arabesque ornaments, the edges of the boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt fillets, rust-brown endleaves, gilt edges. (The colour rather faded around the border and on the spine). Occasional spotting and the leather has faded in patches (as usual with this colour) but a very good and cherished copy. This is the first edition of Family Prayers selected by Lady Lucy Elizabeth Georgina Whitmore (1792-1840, married 1810). Further editions appeared in 1827, 1832, 1845. This copy was given by Lady Whitmore to her father, George Bridgeman (1789-1865), who in 1825 succeeded his father as second Earl of Bradford. On the front fly-leaf she wrote in ink "For my dear Father. Let us "pray one for another that we may be healed" St. James V.16" and inserted at the front is a four page letter from daughter to father. These prayers had supported and soothed poor Lady Lucy during many an hour of heavy suffering and she asked her father to pray for her. She had the book specially bound by Hatchard and gave another copy to her dear mother. Bookplate of the Earl of Bradford and booklabel of John Porter, along with an inserted note that the binding had been cleaned with British Museum leather dressing in 1980, 1984, 1994 and 1997. Which prompted me to give it another light polish in 2003 and 2010. Bookseller Inventory # ebc2185
