Item Description: The American Wringer Co., New York, 1892. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1892 Ed. 10 x 12 x 4.5". Leather-bound 15 lb. Bible published by the American Wringer Co. 1891+ (not dated). Front and back boards are sculpted leather and exhibit 12 different impressed, gilded Biblical scenes. Decorated working pewter latches.Elaborate panelled gilt-trimmed spine with 6 raised bands, unblemished gilt on page block edges. 1338 pp plus indexes, Concordances, and Psalms of David in metre. Several multipage sections of art, Steel plate panoramas, four 2-sided colored map plates, 20 colored plates; additional plates were perforated for removal; several remain including a Family Temperance Pledge. Back sections for family photos. Stated on Title page: "This comprehensive and critical history of all the books of the holy Bible contains a concise account of each book, giving the circumstances under which they were written, the names of the writers, the period of time covered and a short synopisis of the prominent events recorded in each book. Compiled expressively for this edition from the writings of William Smith, LL Ed." Other than the temporary plates designed to be removed from the volume, this Bible is in almost perfect condition: the leather is rubbed around the obvious places--top outer edges of top and tail, prominent edges. Curiously, the gilt-decorated 3/8" thick board edges show no rubbing or loss of decoration. Front & back paste downs and eps are intact. Two extra eps in the front designed to cover the hinge construction have lost the glue (a fixable blemish), revealing the intact heavy linen thread used to support the page block and hinges. Item Description: Antiquarian Library of Mark Slotkin, Los Angeles, CA, 1977. Unbound. Book Condition: Very Good. Unpublished. Elephant Folio - over 15" - 23" tall. A most curious gathering of orginal 17-18th century printed leaves, housed in a "custom" portfolio that is actually the original covers of a National Geographic Atlas of the World, gutted, accompanied by a one-page TLS cover letter (photocopy) mounted on the front cover, dated March 1977, letterhead 'From the Antiquarian Library of Mark Slotkin" (then located in Los Angeles), explaining to the recipient (in this instance an unnamed "Reverend Sir") that s/he is receiving 12 leaves removed from "old books from my library that I started when I was a young man travelling all over the world with my father" (philanthropist Stanley Slotkin). Each of the 12 leaves is mounted (with clear tape at corners!) on the inside recto of a single folded sheet (variously colored) that reproduces in enlarged facsimile the relevant title page on the facing verso. This portfolio contains single leaves from the following: 1) Clypeus Theologiae Thomisticae (Antwerp, 1794); 2) Aristophanis Comoediae Undecim (Amsterdam, 1710); 3) Francisci Sylvij.Commentarij.S. Tho. Aquinatis (Antwerp, 1695); 4) A.R.P.D.
