Full light brown leather, gilt titles and decorations, all edges gilt, silk moire endpapers, ribbon marker bound in, two-page color frontispiece and full-page color illustrations by Uldis Klavins. The winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Literature in 1936. "Set in Oregon in the early years of the twentieth century, H. L. Davis?s Honey in the Horn chronicles the struggles faced by homesteaders as they attempted to settle down and eke out subsistence from a still-wild land. With sly humor and keenly observed detail, Davis pays homage to the indomitable character of Oregon?s restless people and dramatic landscapes without romanticizing or burnishing the myths. Clay Calvert, an orphan, works as a hand on a sheep ranch until he stumbles into trouble and is forced to flee. Journeying throughout the state, from the lush coastal forests, to the Columbia Gorge, to the golden wheat fields east of the Cascades, he encounters a cast of characters as rich and diverse as the land, including a native Tunne boy and a beautiful girl named Luce. Originally published in 1935, Honey in the Horn reveals as much about the prevailing attitudes and beliefs of H. L. Davis? lifetime as it does about the earlier era in which it is set. It transcends the limitations of its time through the sheer power and beauty of Davis? prose. Full of humor and humanity, Davis?s first novel displays a vast knowledge of Pacific Northwest history, lore, and landscape. An essential book for all serious readers of Northwest literature, this classic coming-of-age novel has been called the 'Huckleberry Finn of the West.' It is the only Oregon book that has ever won a Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Illustrated with color drawings plus a double-page color frontispiece drawing by Uldis Klavins. "The pioneer experience has been a favorite topic of American novelists; writers such as Willa Cather, Margaret Wilson and A.B. Guthrie Jr., have written serious and moving accounts of Western settlers. H.L. Davis also wrote of the West, but his boisterous characters and their often-improbable adventures sometimes seem closer to the spirit of tall tales than to the classic pioneer stories. Honey in the Horn, Davis's robust, colorful, humourous tale of Oregon homesteaders early in the 20th century, won both praise and prizes -- including the Harper Prize and the Pulitzer Prize for Novels in 1936. Critics generally responded appreciatively to Davis's gusto and good humor. Malcolm Cowley in The New Republic described Honey in the Horn as "earth-stained, colt-wild and uproarious." The Yale Review concluded that it "exudes raw material with vitality enough to burst the sturdiest binding." The Christian Science Monitor found that "the style makes one think a little of Bret Harte, much more of Mark Twain, and in its episodes, anecdotes and exaggerations has more than a suggestion of Paul Bunyanism, all touched up by Mr. Davis's puckish hand." Even the caustic H.L. Mencken said of Davis that in Honey in the Horn he "proved not only that he had a great deal that was shrewd and pungent to say, but that he could say it to vast effect and in language full of brilliant colors and lovely rhythms." The brilliance and color of the country, in turn, is handsomely conveyed through the paintings of Uldis Klavins, an accomplished artist who favors scenes and people of rugged action. The type is a classic Bembo, and an Olde Style White Wove book paper was specially made for this book at the Warren mills in Maine. Harold Lenoir Davis's own life was more than a match for the lives of his fictional characters. Born in 1896 in Oregon, he began working at the age of nine in a printing office. Something of a wanderer, he was at varous times a typesetter, cowboy, sheepherder, sheriff, and surveyor. He learned new languages from the men with whom he worked -- French, German, Spanish, Greek, Gaelic, and several Indian tongues. During World War I, while in the army, he began writing and translating poetry. He wrote verse primarily for the next ten years -- until H.L. Mencken encouraged him to try his hand at prose. Davis wrote Honey in the Horn while in Mexico on a Guggenheim fellowship. After living for a number of years on a ranch in California, he returned to Mexico, where he died in 1960. Davis drew on Western folk material to create breezy, lysty, colorful pieces of ficiton. His West does not attempt to encompass all of the frontier story, but it certainly was a major facet of the pioneer experience." -- The Franklin Library, excerpt from the Preliminary Page.
