Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. CONAN DOYLE, Arthur. The Hound of the Baskervilles. London, George Newnes, 1902. First edition in book form, first impression, of Sherlock Holmes s literary return after The Final Problem . Based on a local legend of a spectral hound that haunted Dartmoor in Devonshire, the story is set in the moors at Baskerville Hall and the action takes place mostly at night, when the terrifying hound howls for blood. After Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead with his face twisted in stark terror, Holmes is called upon to protect his heir, Sir Henry Baskerville (Britannica). The story was initially serialized in the Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902. Although The Hound of the Baskervilles was published nearly a decade after the story The Final Problem , the events unfold before the detective s shocking death at the Reichenbach Falls. Octavo, pp. 358, [1]; frontispiece (lacking tissue guard) and fifteen plates by Sidney Paget; tiny worm hole at end not affecting text, a very good copy; original red cloth, lettering and art nouveau decoration in gilt by Alfred Garth Jones to spine and cover (signed A.J.G. ), on front cover incorporating black silhouette of hound, top edge red (some light foxing, spine a little sunned).

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Frontispiece and 15 plates by Sidney Paget; cover artwork after Alfred Garth Jones. (illustrator). 1st Edition. First edition. 8vo. Original red cloth blocked in elaborate gilt to upper cover and spine, with inset black silhouette of the Hound to upper cover. With custom made morocco-backed cloth drop back box. Without doubt one of the most thrilling and atmospheric adventures of everybody's favourite consulting detective, a glorious blend of goth pseudo supernatural and definitive Holmesian deductive scene stealing, The Hound of the Baskervilles exists very much in a realm of its own. The novel, the third of four featuring Holmes, was the first tale to be published after Doyle threw his most notable creation off a waterfall, and its considerable commercial success was really the catalyst for Holmes' triumphal return to life. With more plots than Varney the Vampire (actually five in all, including red herrings.so we're exaggerating, because everyone knows Varney has about 750), it seems very much a harking back to the Victorian style of creeper, very Le Fanu or Wilkie Collins, with its diary entries, and letters, unearthed manuscript and doom laden portents uttered by gloomy locals staring out of windows overlooking marsh land. It's glorious and deeply enjoyable, and pretty scarce in this bright, sublime condition. Easily the best copy we have ever handled. Minor edgewear, a very superior copy, tight, strong and bright. Internally clean and fresh. First edition. Original red pictorial cloth, titles and decoration in gilt and black. A very good copy, slightly cocked with a faded spine and a trace of wear to the spine ends. Covers clean and bright and internally fresh with a contemporary inscription to the front endpaper. Sixteen full page black and white plates by Sidney Paget. The most celebrated of all Sherlock Holmes novels, it marks the eagerly awaited return of the amateur detective to the printed page, after his supposed death in The Final Problem in 1893, although this story is set before that event; the reader had to wait until 1905 and "The Return of Sherlock Holmes" before he did rise from the dead. Original serialised in The Strand Magazine in 1901-02, the success of the novel was well anticipated and the first edition had a print run of 25,000 copies meaning that copies of the first editions are still not intrinsically rare. However, due to the physical composition of the book, most copies tend to see the spine become uneven as the binding loosens and the fugitive red pigment tends to fade, making nice copies increasingly seldom seen in commerce.

First Edition
First edition, first issue of the third Sherlock Holmes novel, and widely considered as the best of the series. Octavo, original black and gilt stamped pictorial red cloth, illustrated by Sidney Paget. In near fine condition. Although Conan Doyle killed off his most famous character by sending Holmes over the Reichenbach Falls in a struggle with Professor Moriarty in â The Final Problemâ (December 1893), readers demanded the sleuthâ s return. The author obliged with this, the thirdâ " and still considered by many the bestâ " Sherlock Holmes novel, carefully positioned on the title page as â another adventureâ of Holmes. â But,â as Howard Haycraft notes, â the seed of doubt was plantedâ ; while the novel proved an immediate success, readers pressed for more. Conan Doyle finally relented and engineered Holmesâ â resurrectionâ in 1903. The Hound of the Baskervilles remains â one of the most gripping books in the languageâ (Crime & Mystery 100 Best). â The supernatural is handled with great effect and no letdown. The plot and subplots are thoroughly integrated and the false clues put in and removed with a master hand. The criminal is superbâ ¦ and the secondary figures each contribute to the total effect of brilliancy and grandeur combined. One wishes one could be reading it for the first timeâ (Barzun & Taylor 1142).
