Item Description: Gnome Press, Inc., New York, 1950. Softcover. First edition, wrappered issue, or possibly second printing (see additional information below). Pages browned, two small chips to the wrappers, a very good or a little better copy. One of reportedly 2500 copies (we have also heard the figure of just 200 copies from another source, which seems to be discredited) of the first edition sheets bound up by the publisher in wrappers duplicating the dustjacket art. The intention and publication history of this variant is disputed: it was done either as an "Armed Services Edition" or as a short-lived experiment in paperback publishing. The publisher also issued three other titles thusly, but quickly abandoned the project. One source asserts that these were reprinted in 1951 from the original printing plates (retaining the first edition statement). At any rate this is by far rarer than the hardcover issue of the first edition. Basis, or more properly inspiration, for the 2004 film directed by Alex Proyas and featuring Will Smith, Bridget Moynahan, and Alan Tudyk. A rarity, the fragility of the construction assured that few of the copies survived. See this book in 3D on our site. Bookseller Inventory # 77154

Item Description: New York: Gnome Press, (1950), 1950. HC 1st ed - First printing. Asimov's second book, a collection of nine interlocked stories tracing the development of robots over 75 years. The final story is "The Evitable Conflict" in which the machines that made the world of the 21st century an economic utopia take control of Mankind's future. Asimov's most influential book, this begins with his postulation of the "Three Laws of Robotics." Basis for the film of the same title. 253 pp. Very good in original red cloth with black lettering in a good dust jacket (some light foxing to the edges of the textblock and the endpapers, offsetting to the endpapers, small white spot near lower corner of front board, corners slightly bumped, spine of dust jacket sunned to gray as is common with this title, minor edgewear and rubbing) Despite the flaws, this is overall a clean, tight and straight copy. Item Description: New York: Gnome Press, Inc. Publishers, 1950., 1950. Paperback first edition (with publisher's "First Edition" statement upon copyright page). 253 pages. Paperback: H 19.25cm x L 13.25cm. Color pictorial front cover emulating dj art of the Gnome's clothbound edition; some rubbing to covers, front cover lightly worn at fore-edge corners with strong creasing and some wear at lower left; soiling and foxing to white rear cover and to white spine; small paper loss at spine heel with 1.5cm tear ascending into front cover's adjacent bottom left corner; foxing spots to front cover's blank verso and rear cover's blank recto. First four leaves or so have some creasing and minor nicks at the bottom spine corners associated with aforementioned marring to front cover; mild toning to interior leaves which are otherwise clean. Binding is firm. Else still a very good copy. Whereas science fiction authorities are in consensus that this first wrappered issue is far scarcer than the first clothbound edition, they disagree as to its priority and its purpose with the two primary suppositions being that it was released as an Armed Forces Edition (although that seems unlikely as most such books were in much smaller format so as to fit within a soldier's pocket) or it was just part of a cursory attempt by Gnome Press to enter the paperback business. Item Description: Grayson & Grayson, London, 1952. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good++. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+. First UK Edition. 1st Impression. 8vo., 12.3 x 19cm, 224pp. Original red cloth boards with black titles to the spine with Eric Mudge-Marriott designed dust jacket, unclipped, showing the price of 8/6. The boards are in at least very good+ condition. There is a tiny bump to the top fore edge corner of the upper board, but all corners remain firm and sharp. There is a faint fade line along the bottom and at the bottom fore edge corner of the upper board, in a corresponding place to small closed tears on the jacket. Otherwise, the cloth is beautifully clean and fresh and the binding is tight and square. Internally, there is no bookplate, name or inscription. There are some faint light marks to the title and half title pages but otherwise the pages are clean and crisp with no marks, stains or blemishes, such that the book appears unread. As a whole, the dust jacket is in very good++ condition. The verso has an unnecessary paper strip reinforcing the top of the spine (image available if required). There is a little creasing at the spine head and a previous owner has used a black pen to try and lessen the impact of the white creases that must have been there. There are small closed tears of 5mm & 2mm at the bottom fore edge corner of the front panel, creasing at its top fore edge corner and a very lightly rubbed crease at the top edge. There is a tiny amount of surface loss only at the spine foot's tip. The rear panel has a small 5mm oval blemish near the top edge but generally it is unusually clean and bright. Inside and out, this is a lovely copy of this Asimov classic, seldom found in such good original, unrestored condition.
