Item Description: New York Graphic Society, New York, NY, 1974. Hardback with DJ. First Ed thus, later printing. First Ed thus, second printing [1981]. Very Good+ in Very Good DJ: Both book and DJ show indications of moderate use. Book shows light sunning to the quarter cloth at the front panel; faint soiling at the top edge of the rear panel and several soil spots at the top edge of the text block; else flawless; binding square and secure; text clean. DJ shows mild rubbing and some very faint soiling; light wear to extremities, with a 2" tear at the upper front corner, which has been tape-repaired from verso; bit of very faint dampstaining at the top edge of both the front and rear panels, but in neither case does the book show any effects; price intact. Oblong Folio. 128pp. Covers some 50 years of Ansel's favorites with a loving Foreword by Wallace Stegner. It might be a so-called coffee-table book, but that table had better be big and with strong legs. All Adam's books are lovely, but none rival this one in size. Hardback with DJ. Lacks Slipcase. Item Description: New York Graphic Society, Boston, 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: g+ to vg. First printing. Oblong folio. 127, [1]pp. Original photo-illustrated dust-jacket over black and olive cloth, with silver lettering on spine and front cover. Book housed in its original paper covered slipcase. Ansel Adams (1902 - 1984) was the most honored American photographer of the twentieth century. Through his exhibitions and publication of his work, his writings, and his leadership in the Sierra Club, Adams was also a prescient and highly effective voice in the fight to preserve America's remaining wilderness. "He had a greater impact upon creative photography than any other person in this century." Images 1923-1974 is his "first very-large-format book In full control, Ansel produced his ideal book, comprising his personal choice of pictures, state-of-the-art reproduction, graceful words and elegant design. He selected the 115 photographs that he believed best represented the range of his vision, choosing (as he always did when it was up to him) a wide spectrum of portraits, details, abstracts and occasional quirky subjects, as well as a smattering of his grand landscapes Images was both a great aesthetic and a commercial success, elected as one of the 50 Books of the Year by the American Institute of Graphic Arts and awarded first prize at the World Book Fair in Leipzig, Germany" (Alinder, 266, 307, 388). To Pulitzer Prize-winning writer Wallace Stegner, who authored the introduction, Adams’ "mind and vision, his reverence, his delicacy and strength, will have the power to move and enhance and enlarge us as long as walls exist for photographs" (Miraculous Instants, 51-2). Adams "elevated the act of photography to a religious experience" (Stepan, 96). Book with "First printing 1974" on copyright page. Some rubbing along edges of slipcase. Dust-jacket slightly age-toned and creased along edges. Slipcase in overall good-, dust-jacket in good+, binding and interior in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 37666

Item Description: New York Graphic Society, Boston, Massachusetts, 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Adams, Ansel (illustrator). 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Housed in a near fine slipcase (condition details below), with Ansel Adams' signature on a page tipped in prior to title page and dated "Carmel, 1975". ***ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Ansel Easton Adams (1902-1984) was noted as a perfect balance of photographer and environmentalist. Most of us have seen Ansel Adams' photographs and have been awed by their beauty; he helped to elevate photography to an art comparable with painting and music, and equally capable of expressing emotion and beauty. He told his students, "It is easy to take a photograph, but it is harder to make a masterpiece in photography than in any other art medium". (Info from Wikipedia) ***ABOUT THE BOOK: The twelve-page Introduction by Wallace Stegner foretells the purpose of this book; to share with us Ansel Adams' vision of Nature ("Nature is for reverence") in all its grandeur and glory. In the preface, Ansel Adams himself discusses the difficulty of choosing 115 images from a working span of over 50 years and his hope that we, the viewers, would find new worlds open to us through his eyes. ***DESCRIPTION: Grey cloth boards with the initials "AA" in silver gilt, black cloth spine with silver gilt lettering, pictorial endpapers ("Clearing Storm", Sonoma County Hills, California c. 1960), frontispiece ("Winter Sunrise", Sierra Nevada, 1944) followed by the tipped-in page bearing Ansel Adams' signature and stating it is a special edition for Time-Life subscribers, Carmel, California, dated 1975, followed by title page, Ansel Adams' preface, Wallace Stegner's Foreword, followed by over 100 pages of his incomparable photographs; most from Nature, but some fascinating portraits and scenes that include cities, buildings, and ruins. Oblong folio, pagination: (1-2), tipped in signature page, (3-5), 6-127, Colophon page. The unclipped pictorial dust jacket has a photograph of the Sierra Nevada in winter on the front and Mount Williamson on the back, the front flap contains a summary of the book, the back flap short bios and pictures of both Ansel Adams and Wallace Stegner. The heavy cardboard slipcase is covered in brown paper with the same "AA" initials on the front in black. ***CONDITION: Volume is fine with no evidence of usage; the text block is strong, the head and tail of the spine, and the corners, are perfectly straight with no rubbing, interior is clean and bright, totally free of prior owner markings. The unclipped dust jacket shows the original price of $65.00 "until 12/31/74" and $75.00 thereafter, it is near fine with only some shallow creases to the head of the spine. The slipcase is also near fine with a few shallow tears just beginning at scattered portions of the joints, a small tear to the case where the back meets the top, and some minor scuffing to the back. ***POSTAGE: Please note that this is an extremely large and quite heavy book; while we are happy to ship to both domestic and international addresses, additional postage will apply. If you would like to contact us in advance for postage costs, we are happy to provide an estimate prior to your placing an order. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
