Item Description: Atlantic Publishers & Distributors (P) Ltd, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. The present critical anthology on Indian-English drama is a welcome addition to the ever-increasing repertoire of the academic world. It contains some twenty-two papers on diverse authors, themes and trends. The authors treated in it are Girish Karnad, Mahesh Dattani, Badal Sircar, Rabindranath Tagore (chronologically, Tagore should have been placed first), and Vijay Tendulkar. The themes dealt with herein are myths and folk tales, religious propensity, social alienation, audience participation, feminine psyche, role of freedom, and man-woman relationship. And the trends touched upon in this anthology are mythic and symbolic interpretations, focusing on folklore, experimentations in Third Theatre and street plays, and feminist approaches to certain plays. The broad spectrum of Indian-English Drama has also been presented in a few papers. In its present shape and size, this anthology will, hopefully, find a place on the library shelves and enlighten the academics on the perspectives and challenges inherent in Indian-English Drama. Excerpt from Vikramorvas i: An Indian Drama; Translated Into English Prose From the Sanskrit of Ka lida sa I revere the rhythm as well as the rhyme, by which poetry first becomes poetry; but that which is really, deeply, and fundamentally effective, that which is really permanent and furthering is that which remains of the poet when he is translated into prose. Then remains the pure, perfect substance; of which, when absent, a dazzling exterior often contrives to make a false show; and which, when present, such an exterior contrives to conceal. Excerpt from Sakoontala: Or, the Lost Ring; An Indian Drama, Translated Into English Prose and Verse, From the Sanskrit of Kalidaba Only seventy years have elapsed since the great English Orientalist, Sir William Jones, astonished the learned world by the discovery of a Sanskrit Dramatic Literature. He has himself given us the history of this discovery. It appears that, on his arrival in Bengal, he was very solicitous to procure access to certain books called Nataks, of which he had read in one of the Lettres Edifiantes et Curieuses, written by the Jesuit Missionaries of China. But, although he sought information by consulting both Brahmans and Europeans, he was wholly unable for some time to satisfy his curiosity as to the nature of these books. It was reported to him that they were not histories, as he had hoped, but that they abounded with fables, and consisted of conversations in prose and verse held before ancient Rajas, in their public assemblies. Others, again, asserted that they were discourses on dancing, music, and poetry. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Item Description: Forgotten Books, United States, 2015. Paperback. Book Condition: New. 229 x 152 mm. Language: English Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Excerpt from Sakoontala: Or, the Lost Ring; An Indian Drama, Translated Into English Prose and Verse, From the Sanskrit of Kalidaba Only seventy years have elapsed since the great English Orientalist, Sir William Jones, astonished the learned world by the discovery of a Sanskrit Dramatic Literature. The great sage Bharat says that once all Gods prayed to Brahma the Creator of the Universe to produce a thing of great entertainment possessed with the qualities of the visual and the auditory senses which can be enjoyed alike by all section of society. Brahma then took the nectar of all the four Vedas plot from the Rigveda music from the Sam Veda acting from the Yajurveda and rasas (human emotions) from the Atharva Veda and thus made the fifth Veda drama. Indian Drama in English is not a new thing but a link in the continuation of its rich heritage. The immortal works of Tagore and Aurobindo are steeped in poetry and romance recalling the spirit and flavour of the distinctive dramatic type exemplified in different ways of Bhasa Kalidasa and Bhavabhuti. The other playwrights whose works merit our attention much are Harindra Nath Chattopadhaya T.P. Kailasam Bharati Sarabhai P.A. Krishnaswami Asif Currimbhoy Pratap Sharma Nissim Ezekiel Girish Karnad Vijay Tendulkar Gopal Gandhi Mahesh Duttani Manjula Padmanabhan Mohan Rakesh Badal Sircar etc. Their exploration of the recess of human psychology their tireless efforts to highlight the status of the Dalit and the deserted their revolutionary attitude to expose the evils of society are some of the major things which can't be easily denied. The need of the day is to go to our past myths and traditions and to project the present in the light of the past with an eye to future. 197 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 58056

Item Description: Adhyayan Publishers & Distributors, 2008. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Indian English Literature unfolds some definitive trends and set in some new directions in the field of poetry, drama and criticism. The attitudinal imitative mode of the 19th century has now taken the form of experimentation in both the linguistic innovativeness and the narrativisation fo the structural properties. The rapid growth in Indian English poetry has relieved its writings of colonial effects both in manner and method. With the specificity fo the linguistic improvisation and the confidentiality of expressive mode, Indian English poetry comes at present to a stage wherein one can read and realize the extension of the national culture and its rituals. Contemporary Indian English poets have developed a model for self expressibility. At the instance of poetry and fiction, the art of contemporary Indian English drama witnesses a slow growth.
