Unbound. Condition: Near Fine. Quarto leaf. Folded for mailing, with a thin crease at artist's signature, but the signature is bold and legible. Letter tipped onto an early quarto sheet of blue heavy stock paper. Also tipped onto the sheet are two small reproductions of artwork by Wiles from periodicals. One page, New York [City], June 10, 1891, to Ben. W. Austin, Secretary of the Trinity Historical Society (in Dallas, Texas). Autograph letter, one page, to "Dear Sir," eleven lines, stating (in part): "Your favor of the 26th May notifying me of my election to an honorary membership of your Sociest is at hand. Kindly reprise. my deep gratification. I regret exceedingly that I have no photographs of myself. I shall be pleased to send you one however when next I have one taken. Sincerely yours, Irving R. Wiles." The son of landscape painter Lemuel M. Wiles, Irving Ramsey Wiles studied painting under his father's tutelage, and later at the Art Students' League in New York, taught by William Merritt Chase, and in Paris under Carolus-Duran, (who taught John Singer Sargent); he became a successful portrait painter.
