Gilt embossed blue linen boards/Fine. DJ/Fine. Celebrated 1960 work of American author Scott O'Dell (1898?1989), descendant of Sir Walter Scott, wrote for both young people & adults. This is one of O'Dell's best known works --- translated to 17 languages, winner of the Newbery Medal, and adapted to film. Based on the true story of a North America Indian girl who jumps ship to be with her younger brother who had been cast off on the Island of Blue Dolphins in the Pacific Ocean. The small barren island is so named for being used as a temporal stop for hunters of sea otters. Story of Karana, after her brother is killed by a pack of wild dogs, now living alone in an hospitable land, finds serenity in the face of deep spiritual & physical trails. 181 pges w/color illustrations from Ted Lewin (1935-2021).

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Very scarce in dust jacket, this desirable book is Scott O'Dell's first childrens' book, which won the prestigious Newberry Award, the first of many awards he earned before his premature death. This near-fine copy shows no noticeable wear except for a minor softening at top and bottom of the spine; could be considered a fine copy. The clean and bright, good plus dust jacket retains the original $2.75 price on the flyleaf. Four letters are written across the top of the back cover and an approximately .5- inch by 1-inch piece is missing at the top of the jacket front, back and spine, but *does not effect the lettering.*.
