First edition. First issue, with ink price correction in list of Stevenson's works opposite half title as called for. Ads dated March 1893. Profusely illustrated by Gordon Browne and W. Hatherell. 8vo gilt-stamped blue cloth boards. UNUSUAL BOOKPLATE with "The Last Political Prisoners Unconditionally Released by the United States" written along edge, diagram of some sort of figure rising from a broken shackle (?) at center, "December 22 1923" above diagram and quote from Shakespeare's THE TEMPEST beneath: "This music crept by me upon the waters." Bookplate appears handmade. Presumably refers to the last of the "Wobblies" -- members of the Industrial Workers of the World -- release from prison after serving long terms for "espionage," i.e., opposition to U.S. involvement in WWI. Good or better with spine and corners rubbed, lower front corner bumped, and portion of rear board sunned.
