Royal octavo (9 1/2" x 6 1/") bound in original publisher's grey cloth with red label to spine in gilt lettering to cover and spine in original jacket in slipcase. First edition. John Adams was an American statesman, attorney, diplomat, writer, and Founding Father who served as the second president of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Before his presidency, he was a leader of the American Revolution that achieved independence from Great Britain and during the war, served as a diplomat in Europe. He was twice elected vice president, serving from 1789 to 1797 in a prestigious role with little power. Adams was a dedicated diarist and regularly corresponded with many important contemporaries, including his wife and adviser Abigail Adams as well as his friend and rival Thomas Jefferson. Page Smith (1917-1995) was an American historian, professor and author. After receiving his doctorate, Smith began work as a research associate at the Institute of Early American History and Culture in Williamsburg, Virginia in 1951. He then taught history at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg. From 1953 to 1964, he was a professor of history at UCLA. In 1964, he became the founding provost of Cowell College, the first college of the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). He taught history at UCSC until 1973. Condition: Some underlining in first part of volume two. Jacket spine sunned, some chips to edges and spine else very good in like jackets.

Page Smith focuses on both his public life as well as his marriage with Abigail, and friendship with Jefferson, Franklin, Washington, and Hamilton. 6-1/2" X 9-1/2", 1,180 pages across the two volumes. Both volumes also include two sections of photos. Sturdy gray cloth covered boards with the title imprinted within a field of red on the spine. Cover boards are flat, the corners are not bumped or creased, no edge wear. Jackets for both volumes are intact, with fading to the spine. Both spine panels have a liquid drop mark - about 1/4" circle on Volume II,a d 1/2" on Volume I. Edges of the text block are clean. Binding is tight for both volumes. Page 667 of Volume II has a crease mark at the top right corner. Outer slipcase box is intact, with a 1/2" tear at the top right corner, sun fading to the front facing edges. Applied illustrated panel on one side of the box is intact with no rubbing wear. No former ownership marks, no writing on either volume. Not a library discard. Attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.
