Item Description: The Century Co., New York, 1894. Cloth. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Small 8vo 7½" - 8" tall; xvii, [3], 303 pages. Publisher's olive-green criss-cross patterned cloth, gilt decoration on upper and lower boards, decoration and titles on spine, top edges gilt, in the publisher's illustrated jacket printed in olive green; with numerous plates and illustrations in text, throughout, plus b/w frontispiece. Book is near fine, with a spot of soiling to the upper board, a scrape to the top-edge gilt, and scattered foxing to the page edges; the jacket is heavily chipped at the spine tips, more lightly at the extremities, and age toned, especially at the spine. Housed in a green-cloth clamshell case with leather/gilt spine label; The first American edition, published the same day as the first English, but with substantial differences (see Richards A76). Kipling himself much preferred the American binding to the British, saying it beat the English version "to little pieces." Although it appears the British edition was likely issued with a plain glassine dust jacket, the bibliographies have no record of this illustrated wrapper issued by The Century Co. Richards A77, Livingston 105. Bookseller Inventory # 27021

Item Description: Century, New York, 1899. Later printing. Inscribed to Frank Doubleday's Son, With a Poem Inscribed on the title-page from Kipling to Felix Doty, the son of his close friend and American publisher, Frank N. Doubleday, "Jack Doty, from the Author: Mar 28: 99: Rudyard Kipling." With a holograph four-line quotation on the facing page from the "Law of the Jungle," "Wash daily from nose tip to tail tip - / drink deeply but never too deep. / And remember the night is for hunting & / forget not the day is for sleep, / R.K."Frank N. Doubleday, or "Effendi" - the nickname given him by Kipling, founded Doubleday & McClure Company in 1897, partly on the author's advice. Kipling was close to his American publisher and his family - it was Frank Doubleday's son Nelson who asked Kipling to write a book of animal stories, published as Just So Stories in 1902. The "Jack" Doty of this inscription is undoubtedly Felix Doty (1887-1941), a Louisiana boy adopted by Doubleday. Richards A84 (for first American edition) Publisher's green cloth, stamped in black with elephant on front cover and lion on rear cover. Near fine With decorations by J. Lockwood Kipling. 324 pp. Printed by the DeVinne Press. 1 vols. 8vo. Bookseller Inventory # 267989

Item Description: Macmillan, London, 1895. Hardcover. Book Condition: About Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. John Lockwood Kipling, C.I.E. (illustrator). First U.K. Edition, First Printing. Blue cloth with title and decorations stamped in gilt onto upper board and spine, 12mo (7-1/4 inches tall), all edges gilt, colored endpapers, illustrated throughout with jungle theme line drawings. Volume with spine ends softened and a tiny bump to the foot of the lower board near spine, contemporary gift inscription in ink "Jack. ." at head of the contents page, two small ink dots near top edge of title page. Gilt is bright and text is clean, lacking the foxing commonly found. DJ is worn and soiled with tears and chipping, especially at spine ends and top edge, some splatters to upper spine panel and tape repairs verso. The front panel has "Jack" written in a juvenile hand multiple times in pencil and is partially erased. An interesting coincidence that Kipling's son was John "Jack" Kipling. The bookmark has minor creases and fading to the head, else fine. An intact and robust survivor of one of Kipling's most enduring works, destined to be "King of the Jungle" in any early jacket or Kipling collection. ". .There are thousands that do write; there are dozens that can write; but there is only one Rudyard Kipling." Rudyard Kipling - An Attempt at Appreciation, Monkshood, G. F. (pseud. W. J. Clarke), 1899. The 1895 Macmillan edition of The Second Jungle Book is a relative rarity when found complete in it's original 19th century dust jacket. It was the first illustrated Kipling UK dust jacket issued and is found in only a handful of institutions. Auction house records document the presence of a jacket (in various states of completeness - 1964, '73, '92 & '97) just four times. This jacketed copy also has the publisher's circular "PRESENTATION COPY" blind stamp on the title page and was thus reserved for a patron, friend or colleague. Found within, is the publisher's bookmark, with the printed date of "10.9.95" at it's foot. Macmillan's own records, held in the British Library, show "12 November 1895" (Richards, A85) as the official publication date of the first UK edition of The Second Jungle Book - following by just three days the publication of The Century Co.'s first US edition. The bookmark has "Works by Rudyard Kipling" printed at it's head, and shows The Second Jungle Book as being available prior to either of the known US or UK publication dates, at a price of "6s". Cutler & Styles, in "Modern British Authors: Their First Editions" (1930) show the London edition of The Second Jungle Book as being the first, rather than the US edition. The bookmark is an unusual and evocative piece of advertising ephemera, showing an earlier selection of works by Rudyard Kipling, the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1907. Ref. Richards, A85; Cutler & Styles p. 81. Bookseller Inventory # 1355

Item Description: London: Macmillan and Co., 1894-1895, 1895. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Kipling, John Lockwood (illustrator). 1st Edition. Two volumes. First editions, first printings. The Jungle Book (1894) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling, William Henry Drake, and Paul Frenzeny. The Second Jungle Book (1895) is illustrated by John Lockwood Kipling. Both volumes bound in the publisher's navy cloth, spines lettered in gilt, pictorial jungle images based on artwork by the author's father John Lockwood Kipling stamped to the front boards in gilt, all edges gilt. Both near fine copies, with some minor rubbing to the extremities, former owner's bookplates to the front pastedowns, spine very lightly starting after the preface in The Jungle Book, otherwise both have sturdy spines, a hint of scattered light foxing to The Second Jungle Book, otherwise both have clean and crisp pages. Overall, a bright and very attractive set of the Jungle Books. The Jungle Books are collections of short stories and verses, the most famous of which relate to the feral child protagonist Mowgli, a "man cub." While they can be read independently of each other, each chapter serves as a fable using animal figures to provide a moral lesson. In each volume, the short stories are both preceded and followed by poems or songs, including the notable "Mowgli's Song" and "The Law of the Jungle." The Jungle Books, based on the author's childhood and later work experience in British India, are indicative of Western Orientalist ideology at the turn of the 20th century, which is somewhat softened by Kipling's fondness for his former home. Both Jungle Books are illustrated by the author's father, John Lockwood Kipling, who was a practicing illustrator and art professor in Bombay. Bookseller Inventory # RK032

A lovely mixed set of one of the cornerstone titles in children's literature & Kipling highlight & along with Just So Stories, his most beloved work. Custom red & blue leather slipcase. First published in magazine format in 1893-4. British Nobel laureate Rudyard Kipling was born in India lived there & in England & wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The tales are fables, using animals in an anthropomorphic manner to give moral lessons. The verses of The Law of the Jungle, for example, lay down rules for the safety of individuals, families & communities. Kipling put in them nearly everything he knew or "heard or dreamed about the Indian jungle." Other readers have interpreted the work as allegories of the politics & society of the time. The best-known of them are the three stories revolving around the adventures of an abandoned "man cub" Mowgli who is raised by wolves in the Indian Jungle with the help of Baloo the bear & Bagheera the black panther, & then has to fight the tiger Shere Khan. The most famous of the other stories are probably "Rikki-Tikki-Tavi", the story of a heroic mongoose, & "Toomai of the Elephants", the tale of a young elephant-handler. "The White Seal", in which the main character seeks a haven for his people where they would be safe from hunters, has been considered a metaphor for Zionism, then in its beginning. As with much of Kipling's work, each of the stories is preceded by a piece of verse, & succeeded by another. $2475. Bookseller Inventory # 30819
