Item Description: London The Nonesuch Press 1963, 1963. 2 volumes. First edition, limited, of the octavo printing designed by Francis Meynell. Profusely illustrated with reproductions of the fine 16th century woodcuts of Bernard Salomon. Tall 8vo, original fine green linen decorated in gilt on covers and spines. xxvii, 700; iv, 806. A very pleasing set, with just the lightest touch of wear to the tips and edges. A very appealing version of the Bible--the traditional King James text finely printed in single column, and with the addition of Salomon's woodcuts, which lend a historical feel to the volumes. It was designed by Sir Francis Meynell to be an exceptional combination of handiness, legibility and beauty. The set is printed on a fine India paper made especially for this edition to Sir Meynell’s specifications and bound in a fine green linen also produced especially for Meynell. The King James or Authorised Version of the Bible is an English translation of the Christian Bible first published in 1611. The New Testament was translated from the Textus Receptus (Received Text) edition of the Greek texts, so called because most extant texts of the time were in agreement with it. The Old Testament was translated from the Masoretic Hebrew text. (Modern English Bibles such as the New American Standard Bible and the English Standard Version decline to use the Textus Receptus, opting instead for what many modern scholars feel are more reliable critical editions.) The King James Version has had a profound effect on English literature. The works of famous authors such as John Milton, Herman Melville, John Dryden, and William Wordsworth are deeply inspired by it. Although it is often referred to as the King James Version, particularly in the United States, King James was not personally involved in the translation, though his authorisation was legally necessary for the translation to begin, and he set out guidelines for the translation process, such as prohibiting footnotes and ensuring the position of the Church of England was recognised on various points. It is more commonly known as the "Authorized Version" in the United Kingdom. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hardcover. Bookseller Inventory # 002454

References: Entry no. 72 in Hamel, Disbound and Dispersed (Caxton 2005), at p. 117; 275 Bibliography of the Grabhorn Press, 1915-1956. Note that this is a heavy and oversized book, so additional postage will be required for international or priority orders. ~LR1~ The King James Version (KJV), also known as the Authorized Version (AV) or King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611. Two editions of the whole Bible are recognized as having been produced in 1611, which may be distinguished by their rendering of Ruth 3:15; the first edition reading 'he went into the city,' where the second reads 'she went into the city'; these are known colloquially as the 'He' and 'She' Bibles. The leaf in this copy is from the first edition, the 'He' Bible, from the Book of Daniel, Chapter 4, verses 4 through 37 (dealing with Nebuchadnezzar's Second Dream), and Chapter 5, verses 1 through 6 ('Belshazzar the King made a great feast to a thousand of his Lords, and dranke wine before the thousand'), with a lovely 'B' ornate dropcap at the outset of Chapter 5 for Belshazzar. The first edition for the King James Bible is especially prized by collectors - a complete second edition in average condition will sell for $20,000-25,000 while a first edition of the same quality will bring $50,000-75,000. Item Description: [London Robert Barker 1611], 1611. A single leaf from the First Edition or the Editio Princeps of the King James’ Bible. Printed double-column with headlines and chapter lines, this leaf with three fine five line ornamental capital initials, text within woodcut rules, in both gothic and roman letter. Royal Folio, Single leaf. A very fine and well preserved leaf with no staining or wear whatsoever. A large leaf showing the original stab marks for sewing from the original time of binding. 17th century marginal note small and unobtrusive. A LEAF IN PERFECT CONDITION FROM THE BOOK OF PROVERBS FROM THE EDITIO PRINCEPS OF KING JAMES' BIBLE, COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE 'AUTHORIZED' VERSION, A LANDMARK OF PRINTING AND THE MOST FAMOUS OF ALL ENGLISH BIBLES. The King James Bible was described by W. A. Jackson as "perhaps the single most important influence upon the development of English prose style." It was royally commissioned, in the hopes of reconciling or ameliorating the conflicts between the Bishop's Bible, officially read in services, and the Geneva Bible, much more popular among the laity, but mistrusted within much of the Church hierarchy as being aggressively radical, especially in its annotations.
