Item Description: Penguin Designer Classic, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. 1st Edition. IMMACULATE NEW copy of this supreme collectable in the Penguin Classic Anniversary Editions. This remarkable and very beautiful edition has become the most sought after edition in the series by far. Sir Paul Smith designed the book, and chose to cover the board binding in delicate embroidered silk, which features the flowers Lawrence mentions in the book. The silk has been used for every aspect of this gorgeous book; even the Penguin logo is embroidered in silk. This particular copy has a unique signed pictorial card from the great designer himself, which is loose laid on the title page. This really is a breathtaking production in every way, from its large format pages to its silk covering over the top of the binding boards, all the way to the heavy lucite case that was especially designed for the book, and which has a subtle explanatory text silk screened on to it, and which I found too difficult to photograph. For once, the hype is well worth the result. Truly, this is a classic. Signed by Illustrator(s). Bookseller Inventory # 003790

Item Description: London, England: Penguin/Penguin Designer Classics, 2006. Hardcover. Book Condition: As New. Dust Jacket Condition: As New. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 365 pages. Published in 2006. Artist Book. One of the most beautiful Artist Book interpretations of the classic ever created. Limited Edition of 1000 numbered copies. The edition is now rare. An elegant production by Paul Smith: Oversize-volume format. Text by D. H. Lawrence. Art by Sir Paul Smith. White cardboard box. Printed on archival acid-free stock paper in the United Kingdom to the highest standards. In transparent Plexiglas ("Perspex") box, which serves as the book's outer DJ. Published on the occasion of Penguin Book's 60th Anniversary, "Lady Chatterley's Lover" is one of five classics that the publisher issued in a Limited Edition by commissioning five of the world's most important artists in their respective fields. The other titles are Gustave Flaubert's "Madame Bovary", F. Scott Fitzgerald's "Tender Is The Night: A Romance", and Fyodor Dostoyevsky's "Crime and Punishment" and "The Idiot" (he is the only novelist to be honored with two masterpieces in the Series). Penguin held a global auction of the "Number 1" signed copy of each title on the day of its 60th Anniversary in 2006. In terms of design, "Lady Chatterley's Lover" is the most delicately beautiful in the Series. Smith chose the flower symbol (the illicit lovers garland themselves with flowers during lovemaking to express their joy and oneness with each other and with Nature) for his romantic (as opposed to erotic) interpretation: "A cloth jacket is wrapped loosely around the hardback, with the design of flowers which are found in the book and lettering stitched into the cloth, including the Penguin logo on the spine" (Publisher's blurb). Sir Paul Smith is the single most celebrated fashion designer in the British Classic tradition. His fashion empire includes shops in London as well as Paris, Milan, New York, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, the Philippines, Korea, and Kuwait. He has an incredible 200 shops in Japan alone, where he has a massive following. The ultimate book-as-object, the literary classic-as-work-of-art, worthy of this auspicious celebration and posterity. An absolute "must-have" title for D. H. Lawrence and Paul Smith collectors. This copy is Number 880, indicated as such on the Front Limitation Page. By special arrangement with Penguin, Sir Paul Smith signed only the first copy, which is now in private hands. The Limited Edition is an instant collectible. This is one of very few copies still available online and has no flaws, a pristine beauty. A rare copy thus. One of the greatest writers of all time, re-interpreted by one of the finest living artist/fashion designers. A flawless collectible copy.
