Hard Cover. First American edition, stated. 147 pgs., 8vo. This is actually the last book the author completed, its complete MSS being found after her death in 1970. Lacking final editing, it was published with only obvious corrections to a few slips in the text, and reconstruction of some brief passages written in her hand near her last days, in a final notebook, not firmly placed in the novel and arguably perhaps text she would not have used had she completed editing for the press herself. the story told is that of comedy and melodrama in Victorian family life, a genre of which she was a master, and as Angus Wilson summed it up, "the last and perhaps the best of a long line of English stoical unbelievers." the book is unclipped, has a sound cloth binding of reddish color, sharp title stampings, no markings within. Very good condition in very good dust jacket.
