Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Jacket by Philip Tunnicliffe (illustrator). 1st Edition. First published in February 1966, this is a third impression of March 1967. Edge wear, scuffing and some creasing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, corners and folds scuffed, some overall time staining, but jacket still bright and unsunned. Not price clipped (35s), no inscriptions, internally clean tight and square, overall in vg+ condition for its age. 261pp. A witty and enchanting memoir of a childhood spent in Egypt before the First World War. Kitchener is in the Residency, the British Empire is secure, until the chaos of the War. Priscilla Hayter Napier (1908-98), was the daughter of Sir William Hayter, an adviser to the Egyptian government. She spent her early years in Cairo, and later wrote of her mother and her aunts that they were "true Victorians: not in a general way frightened of murder and sudden death, but perfectly terrified of insects. After her husband was killed on active service in 1940, Priscilla Napier was left to bring up their son and two daughters. She then developed a writing career based on studies of her dead husband's family. A rare book.
