Item Description: Pagnerre, 1862. Couverture rigide. Item Description: New York. Carleton, 1862. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Bound in rusty brown cloth with impressed pattern. Gold lettering on the spine. Ever so slightly shelf-cocked. 171 pages + ads. This is the first American edition of Les Miserables -- it was published in 5 parts, of which this is the first. Pages are toned from age; it was not printed on the best quality paper. Text is in English, printed in double columns. There is a stain at the bottom margin, a sort of gray cloud below the text throughout the book, never affecting the words, but always there. Previous owner has written his name large on the title page and inside front cover, "W.B. Farwell." The name Geo H. Booth Jan 1876 is also signed on the inside front cover. On the rear endpaper there is a pencil floorplan of a fine house at the corner of Park and Second Streets (city unknown). Willard Brigham Farwell was a journalist, miner and early settler in California -- he went there in 1849 just after the gold discovery. He campaigned for Lincoln on the western frontier and Lincoln rewarded him with an appointment as Naval Officer for the District of San Francisco. He died in 1903. This is the first english translation of the first part of the novel, published in France earlier the same year. Please email with questions or to request photos. Bookseller Inventory # Fred-Y129

Item Description: Carleton, New York, 1862. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. First U. S. edition of the fourth book of Victor Hugo's classic work, Les Miserables. Les Mis was first published in 1862, and this volume is the first U.S. edition, published in the same year. Saint Denis opens with some history to set the stage, and proceeds to follow the lives - both hardships and bright spots - of the characters we have come to know and love, including Marius, Cosette and Valjean, Gavroche and Thenardier. Hugo concludes this volume with some piercing observations of the French criminal justice system of the time. ***DESCRIPTION: Green pebbled cloth binding with blind embossed decorations on the covers, light brown lettering on the spine, salmon pink endpapers, advertisement on the verso of the second flyleaf (opposite the title page) for Les Miserables, noting "the price of the original French edition is $3.00 for each novel, in paper, while the American translation is 50 cents, in paper covers, and $1.00 in cloth binding", vintage prior owner name and address in pencil, written in a flowing hand, on the front free endpaper; pagination (i-vi), (7)-184. ***CONDITION: Overall the volume is in fair only condition, mostly due to some old water damage. The front board is warped and there is an old dampstain on it, with dampstaining to many of the pages, mostly at the beginning of the book. In addition there is edgewear and rubbing to the corners, the front joint is beginning to crack near the tail, and some white spots to the spine. We do not usually offer books in this condition, however, the book is still solidly holding together and most of the text pages are clean, it is well-suited as a reading copy for the person who would like to own and read a first edition of this work. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply, please contact seller for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
