Book Description: Little Brown and company, 1996. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. Illustrated Edition. First edition thus. Large quarto, not price clipped in transparent dustwrapper as issued. A chance to own an important SIGNED and DATED copy of the Illustrated Long Walk To Freedom. What elevates this particular copy to UNIQUE status is that it was presented to IOC (International Olympic Commitee) member and Canadian Olympic Committee CEO Carol Anne Letheren on 6th November 1996, during the period when the then President Mandela and other prominent Africans were bidding to host the 2004 Olympics. Carol Anne Letheren (1942 - 2001) was a prominent Olympic figure, general sports luminary and member of the International Olympic Committee. She was recognised during her lifetime by many sports halls of fame and was additionally honoured, posthumously, with the prestigious Olympic Order (for further reading, her fascinating story is documented in a well-written biography by Garth Paton). The book itself is in fine condition, unread and fresh, and is a beautiful production full of numerous fascinating colour and black and white photographs - minor bump to top of spine but bright, clean, tight pages. The dustwrapper for the illustrated edition is notoriously fragile, made of delicate, transparent, tracing-paper type material. As a result, the dustwrapper does not age well and on every copy I've handled has a variation of scratches, tears and browning. Pleasingly, this particular dustwrapper fares better than most, but inevitably has a few minor detractions, namely: light toning to the edges and spine, a short closed tear to the bottom front and two very small marks to the back panel. The book and wrapper are both now fully protected for the future from light and dust by being housed in a beautiful, custom made clamshell box by the world-renowned Chelsea Bindery. The box is a standout piece in itself, in 1/4 Moroccan hide with the Olympic rings tooled in gilt to the spine. Velvet lining. We have sold many special Nelson Mandela books over the years and this one is another glorious collector's piece, and - unlike one of a run of the various numbered limited editions - unique. Boldly signed and dated by Mandela to Letheren on an intricately decorated presentation page: a wonderful item of South African, Canadian and indeed world history and surely the centrepiece of any library. ABOUT US: It is our philosophy at N V to provide the astute collector with high quality books for pleasure and investment, whilst offering a service that is always friendly and helpful. EVERY listing has a sharp digital image (or images) of the EXACT book(s) that you are perusing. The accompanying description is meticulous and we guarantee that all items are authentic. Book Description: Little Brown, London, 1994. First Signed Limited edition, one of 250 numbered copies. Octavo, bound in full green leather, gilt titles and ruling to the spine and front panel. There was a limited edition in cloth issued in a numbered edition of 750 copies. Fine in a fine slipcase as issued, original brown cardboard the item was shipped in. Exceptionally rare, this is the first copy we have encountered. "The Nelson Mandela who emerges from his memoir is considerably more human than the icon of legend Mandela is, on the evidence of his amazing life, neither a messiah nor a moralist nor really a revolutionary but a pragmatist to the core, a shrewd balancer of honor and interests. He is, to use a word unhappily fallen into disrepute, a politician, though one distinguished from lesser practitioners of his calling mainly by his unwavering faith in his ultimate objective, ending white minority rule" (New York Times). Book Description: Macdonald Purnell, US, 1994. Hardcover. Book Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. 9.4 x 6.5 x 2.3 inches. Signed and dated by Nelson Mandella on the half title page. Later Printing. The book is in pristine condition, having been sealed in its original plastic wrap since 1995, removed only once to take photographs of the book. The book has an unusual, unique provenance. It was actually signed and dated by Nelson Mandela on May 25, 1995, the official start date of the 1995 Rugby World Cup, which the movie Invictus was based on. The book's owner attended the first match that day (South Africa vs. Australia); he met Nelson Mandela later that day, and Mandela signed his book. At the time, Mandela was the President of South Africa. Interestingly, the book contains an insert for the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, indicating that the book itself was to be "A Limited autographed edition in celebration of the 1995 Rugby World Cup"; it also confirms the bookseller (CNA). From what we can tell, this insert is what President Mandela typically signed, but in our case, the book was signed, instead of the insert, making it a scarce copy. By author.
