Item Description: Little Brown and company, 1996. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Illustrated Edition. First edition thus. Large quarto. A chance to own an important SIGNED and DATED copy of the Illustrated Long Walk To Freedom. What elevates this particular copy to UNIQUE status is that it was presented to IOC (International Olympic Commitee) member and Canadian Olympic Committee CEO Carol Anne Letheren on 6th November 1996, during the period when the then President Mandela and other prominent Africans were bidding to host the 2004 Olympics. Carol Anne Letheren (1942 - 2001) was a prominent Olympic figure, general sports luminary and member of the International Olympic Committee. She was recognised during her lifetime by many sports halls of fame and was additionally honoured, posthumously, with the prestigious Olympic Order (for further reading, her fascinating story is documented in a well-written biography by Garth Paton). The book is in fine condition, unread and fresh, and is a beautiful production full of numerous colour and black and white photographs - minor bump to top of spine but bright, clean, tight pages. It is now fully protected from light and dust by being housed in a beautiful, custom made clamshell box by the world-renowned Chelsea Bindery. The box is a standout piece in itself, in 1/4 Moroccan hide with the Olympic rings tooled in gilt to the spine. Velvet lining. We have sold many special Nelson Mandela books over the years and this one is another glorious collector's piece. Boldly signed and dated by Mandela to Letheren on an intricately decorated presentation page: a wonderfully attractive item. ABOUT US: It is our philosophy at N V to provide the astute collector with high quality books, whilst offering a service that is always friendly and helpful. EVERY listing has a sharp digital image (or images) of the EXACT book(s) that you are perusing. The accompanying description is meticulous and we guarantee that all items are authentic. Item Description: Little Brown and company, 1996. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. No Jacket. Limited Edition. The magnificent illustrated and limited edition of Nelson Mandela's brilliant autobiography. Quarter bound by hand in wassa goatskin leather from South Africa and housed in the original custom made, silk-lined presentation box complete with a silk ribbon bookmark. Includes a specially commissioned portrait of the great man taken by Benny Gool that is SIGNED and DATED by Mandela. A reassuringly exclusive print run, this is copy 137 of only 425 copies. Additionally, this is one of the few copies out of that 425 with the FULL 'Nelson Mandela' signature (as opposed to his usual 'N Mandela'). It is unknown how many copies have the full signature, but we can say without doubt that the vast majority of the 425 are signed in his usual way. This is a particularly special example then, stored and handled carefully over the c20 years since publication and thus, happily, in near fine condition throughout. Widely considered among collectors as THE edition of Long Walk To Freedom to own, this is a stunning publication. ABOUT US: It is our philosophy at N V to provide the astute collector with high quality books, whilst offering a service that is always friendly and helpful. Marius Kleynhans worked as a political jounalist with the SABC (South African Broadcasting Corporation) until 1990. He spent much of this period in both Washington and London. In 1990 he was invited to join the Constitutional Development Service as communication advisor to the constitutional negotiations. He stayed with the CDS until after the first national elections. He first met President Nelson Mandela in April 1990. He advised him and others until 1995. The following is sourced from Wikipedia: Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela (1918 2013) was a South African anti-apartheid activist and philanthropist who served as President of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was South Africa's first black President. Mandela was a controversial figure for much of his life. Denounced as a communist terrorist by critics, he nevertheless gained international acclaim for his activism, having received more than 250 honours, including the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize (which he shared with F. W. de Klerk), the US Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the Soviet Order of Lenin." "South Africa's first black President, who personifies the struggle for human rights and racial equality, recounts his life. It is an epic tale with a triumphant ending that would scarcely have been credible just a few years ago: from a traditional Tembu childhood, through political activism, the founding of the African National Congress, life imprisonment for treason and violent conspiracy, 27 years behind bars, to release in 1990 and the first multi-racial elections in 1994. Mandela is clear, eloquent and inspiring in this deeply moving testament to idealism, charity and hope." (Kirkus Review, UK) Size: Octavo. INSCRIBED. Hard Cover. Bookseller Inventory # 05817
