Book Description: Associated Newspapers Ltd, London, 1934. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. Holman Hunt, Jalbert, Raphael, Ford Maddox Brown, Leonardo Da Vinci, De Munkacsy, Kehren (illustrator). FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. FIRST EDITION & FIRST PRINTING !! - The very last work of Charles Dickens to be published. The Life of Our Lord - WRITTEN EXPRESSLY FOR HIS CHILDREN - There is also a 'facsimile of the first page of the manuscript of this book in Charles Dickens' own handwriting' Copyright Page States: FIRST PUBLISHED IN MCMXXXIV - FOREWORD BY LADY DICKENS : This book, the last work of Charles Dickens to be published, has an individual interest and purpose that separate it completely from everything else that Dickens wrote. Quite apart from its Divine Subject, the manuscript is peculiarly personal to the novelist, and is not so much a revelation of his mind as a tribute to his heart and humanity, and also, of course, his deep devotion to Our Lord. - It was written in 1849, twenty-one years before his death, expressly for his children. The simple manuscript is entirely handwritten and is in no sense a fair copy but a spontaneous draft. In order to preserve its personality, the manuscript has been followed faithfully in every detail. This accounts for the varying use of capital letters, and other peculiarities. Charles Dickens frequently told his children the Gospel Story, and made mention of the Divine Example in his letters to them. This life of Our Lord was written without thought of publication, in order that his family might have a permanent record of their father¿s thoughts. After his death, this manuscript remained in the possession of his sister-in law, Miss Georgina Hogarth. On her death in 1917 it came into the possession of Sir Henry Fielding Dickens. Charles Dickens had made it clear that he had written 'The Life of Our Lord' in a form which he thought best suited to his children, and not for publication. His son, Sir Henry, was averse to publishing the work in his own lifetime, but saw no reason why publication should be withheld after his death. Sir Henry¿s will provided that, if the majority of his family were in favour of publication 'The Life of Our Lord' should be given to the world. It was first published, in serial form, in March 1934. Marie Dickens - April 1934 - CONDITION & DESCRIPTION: The original dustjacket houses this book. Browned round the edges. Few small closed edge tears have been repaired to the top of the spine. I will house this in a removable plastic sleeve for future protection. Blue leather boards, with the title of the book and thae author's name on the spine and the front board in gold leaf. Very good clean condition. Beautiful decoration. - Marbelled endpages front and rear. All pages are all clean and tightly bound. - The illustrations are absolutely beautiful, as you can see. ----- POSTAGE OPTIONS: Our orders are shipped within 1 or 2 business days. --- If you select 'Priority' as the postal option, you will get the fastest option. Book Description: United Features Syndicate. Book Condition: Very Good-, No Dust Jacket. 1st American, 1934 edition. 4TO, 52+ pgs., B/W Illus Hardcover: Black cloth binding with title in gold on frontboard. Corners are worn. Lower edge of front board is frayed in spots.Endpapers soiled and foxed. Paper clip mark to second free endpaper and title page. Rear hinge cracked. Binding is still nice and tight. Text is clean. Dickens wrote "The Life of My Lord" for his children in 1849 and did not intend it to be published. The work stayed in the family until the death of Dicken's last child Henry Fielding Dickens, when the Dickens family finally decided to sell the rights to the piece. The rights were sold in the UK to Associated Newspapers Ltd and in the US to United Features Syndicate. General Manager Monte Bourjaily of United Features, whose card is paper clipped to the ffep of this book, sold the rights to the piece as a newspaper serial which would run as daily serialized versions in newspapers across the United States from March 5th to March 20th 1934. In addition book rights were sold to Simon & Schuster which published a limited edition as well as a trade edition. The dates of the newspaper serialization were strictly administered. Each newspaper that purchased the rights to the piece were given very specific dates when to run each installment so they would all publish on the same days. Each newspaper was given a copy of the piece in advance with specific instructions that they could not even announce the upcoming Dickens serial until February 16, 1934. This is the prepublication copy sent to the newspapers, as it has the publication warnings. It is the true First American Edition. Bookseller Inventory # 022240
