Item Description: Faber and Faber, London, 1954. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a fine dust jacket. Signed by William Golding. An exceptional copy. "A collection of modern fiction would never be complete without it" (Connolly, 136). Originally published in 1954, The Lord of the Flies was named to Modern Library's 100 Greatest Novels List of the twentieth century. "[T]his brilliant work is a frightening parody on man's return (in a few weeks) to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge. Fully to succeed, a fantasy must approach very close to reality. Lord of the Flies does. It must also be superbly written. It is" (The New York Times Book Review). Bookseller Inventory # 3089

Item Description: Faber, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A first edition, first printing published by Faber in 1954. A fine book without inscriptions, with E M Forster's personal ticket ('This book belongs to E M Forster') to the front free endpaper. In the supplied very good clipped wrapper which has a darkened spine with some very minor loss to the top and tail of the spine and one neat closed tear to the foot of the spine and a smaller one to the head of the spine. There has been a little professional paper reinforcement to the inside of the spine edge. The front panel is still very vibrant. Comes complete with the very scarce wrap-around band which states the book is 'E M Forster's Choice' on the spine and has reviews from numerous sources (Manchester Guardian/Observer/BBC) - there have only been two instances (to our knowledge) in the last ten years when this band has appeared for sale and there is, excluding this, only one copy for sale at the time of writing. Now comes complete with a custom-made solander box with gilt titling. Made from leather. A superb addition to the book. A superb association with Forster, who declared the book to be 'the outstanding novel of the year'. This followed the novel's rejection by 21 publishers, before Charles Montieth realised its potential. The rest, including the achievement of Golding's Nobel Prize for Literature, is history. Now supplied in a custom-made clamshell leather box. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-11364027621

A touch of foxing to the end-papers and also the top edge otherwise a near fine sharp copy with a tight binding and lovely, clean pages. The book has no inscriptions, marks or book-plates. The first issue D/W is a superb fine example. It is complete with very slight toning to the edges and the spine and with a short invisible closed tear at the top right hand corner of the front cover.
