Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. First edition, first printing. An advance presentation copy inscribed by William Golding to his next-door neighbors and dated ten days before publication, reading "To Mr and Mrs Nelles with the author's regards 7/9/54" with his name not signed. Bound in original red cloth with titles in white on spine. Near Fine with slight fading to cloth, bleeding to edges of front paste down and several tiny spots to textblock edge. In a Very Good or better unclipped dust jacket with light bleeding from cloth to blindside, light waviness to front panel, light edge wear, short tear at bottom of front spine joint and two short splits to rear spine joint. An allegorical tale of children stranded on a coral island and their disastrous attempt to govern themselves. It was Golding's first novel, who was a middle-aged school teacher when he wrote it. After reading an unrealistic story of stranded youth, he commented to his wife he could do better. He drew upon on his experience as a school teacher, and at one point even divided the children into two groups and told them to fight each other and observed. The manuscript was rejected by many publishers, and even the book's publisher Faber and Faber initially rejected it as well. A lovely association copy from a then-unknown British school teacher on the cusp of becoming a major novelist, inscribing a copy of his soon-to-be published book to his next-door neighbors. The novel would become a titan of twentieth-century literature and would be named as one of the Modern Library 100 Best Novels, ranked number 41 on the editor's list and 25 by readers. In 1983, Golding was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "for his novels which, with the perspicuity of realistic narrative art and the diversity and universality of myth, illuminate the human condition in the world of today.".

A first edition, first printing published by Faber in 1954. A fine book with just a little toning to the pages. White titles on red cloth very clear and bright. No inscriptions. In a very good clipped wrapper with some light internal reinforcement to the spine. Spine browned, with a little wear to the extremities. Accompanied by the rare wrap-around band. In a custom-made clamshell box with titles. E. M Forster's own copy, with his book label. Much of Forster's library was sold when the author moved from his family home at West Hackhurst in Abinger Hammer, Surrey in 1946. After taking residence in Kings College Cambridge (with a much reduced library), he continued to give books away as he acquired new ones. Most of his final was sold in 1971 by Heffer and Sons. There were many first edition copies in this, but not this particular copy. Forster was pivotal to the success of 'Lord of the Flies', talking Faber into taking on the unknown writer. It was slow to sell, but with Forster's naming it 'outstanding novel of the year', the book has since gone on to sell over 10 million copies worldwide. Faber produced the E. M. Forster's choice band after the first copies had sold out (before being reprinted). Such bands are scarce now and not mentioned in the bibliography. Accompanying the book is an original hand-written letter from Golding to a Mr Heffner in response to a letter from Heffner. Dated 2nd January 1968, the letter (rather delightfully) reads, 'Dear Mr Heffner, Lord Of The Flies went to a number of publishers before Faber took it. I can't remember how man. I've had no similar trouble since, Yours Sincerely, William Golding'. A superb association and a beautiful letter making a rare package for the Golding collector.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition, First Printing: Fine/Near Fine. Beautiful bright near fine plus condition clean book with a magnificent near fine vibrant original unclipped dust jacket. A superb copy of this book with stunning ruby red cloth boards with sharp corners and no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. Strong, unfaded white titles to the spine. The end papers have one delicate scripted owner name and date of 1954 (in the year of publication), and otherwise are in perfect condition, with no bookplates and no bookstore stamps. The internal pages are clean, bright and flat, internally appearing as fresh and unread but very faint foxing to the end papers. This original First Issue Dust Jacket with the summary of ?Lord of the Flies? on the front flap, (later editions were changed to blurbs), is bright and vibrant in color and received only a tiny touch of restoration to the upper tip of the jacket spine. The jacket presents in magnificent near fine/fine condition and withOUT any of the typical discoloratin or sunning to the spine. The dust jacket maintains the strong vibrant colors with no other rips, no chips, no edgewear, no fading, no foxing and no stains. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and is priced 12s 6d net. A stunning dust jacket, scarce in this condition. Originally published in 1954, The Lord of the Flies was named to Modern Library?s 100 Greatest Novels List of the twentieth century. In the early 1960s cultural commentators noted that Lord of the Flies was replacing Salinger?s Catcher in the Rye as the bible of the American adolescent. Since then, this masterpiece has established itself as a modern classic. ?This brilliant work is a frightening parody on man?s return to that state of darkness from which it took him thousands of years to emerge. Fully to succeed, a fantasy must approach very close to reality. Lord of the Flies does. It must also be superbly written. It is? (The New York Times Book Review). A very handsome copy of this scarce title in superb condition. Presents extremely well on the shelf. ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our ABE store for other landmark classics.
