Item Description: Faber, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. A first edition, first printing published by Faber in 1954. A fine book without inscriptions, with E M Forster's personal ticket ('This book belongs to E M Forster') to the front free endpaper. In the supplied very good clipped wrapper which has a darkened spine with some very minor loss to the top and tail of the spine and one neat closed tear to the foot of the spine and a smaller one to the head of the spine. There has been a little professional paper reinforcement to the inside of the spine edge. The front panel is still very vibrant. Comes complete with the very scarce wrap-around band which states the book is 'E M Forster's Choice' on the spine and has reviews from numerous sources (Manchester Guardian/Observer/BBC) - there have only been two instances (to our knowledge) in the last ten years when this band has appeared for sale and there is, excluding this, only one copy for sale at the time of writing. Now comes complete with a custom-made solander box with gilt titling. Made from leather. A superb addition to the book. A superb association with Forster, who declared the book to be 'the outstanding novel of the year'. This followed the novel's rejection by 21 publishers, before Charles Montieth realised its potential. The rest, including the achievement of Golding's Nobel Prize for Literature, is history. Now supplied in a custom-made clamshell leather box. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-11364027621

Item Description: Coward-McCann, Inc., New York, 1955. First American Edition. First Printing. Octavo; 3/4 dark green textured paper over quarter beige cloth, with titles stamped in dark green on spine; dustjacket; 243pp. Contemporary owners name and date to front endpaper, sunning to board edges, with faint trace of foxing to text edges; Very Good+ to Near Fine. Dustjacket is price-clipped, with light wear to spine ends and corner tips, else a bright, Near Fine example. Housed in a custom dark green cloth slipcase. Considerably less common that its British counterpart; when Lord of the Flies was first published in the U.S. in 1955, it sold only 2,383 copies before quickly going out of print. By the numbers, fewer copies of the American edition were produced and survived than the British, which was published at 3,040 copies. Golding's best-known and most controversial novel. Lord of Flies is ranked #41 on the Modern Library's list of 100 Best Novels, and is the basis for both the 1963 Peter Brook film (terrific) and the 1990 film directed by Harry Hook (ghastly). Though it remains one of the most challenged books by the American Library Association year after year, it is likely to be required reading in schools for the forseeable future. Item Description: Faber and Faber, London, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. 1st Edition. William Golding's "Lord of the Flies". First Edition, First Impression; with no later printings mentioned on the copyright page. Published by Faber and Faber in London in 1954. With a later printing dust jacket. The dust jacket is in very good condition. Small chips at the corners with larger chips at the top of the spine affecting the title. The spine is heavily sun faded with wear at the hinges. The flaps are slightly clipped but the original price of 15s remains on the front flap. The book is in very good minus to good plus condition. The red cloth boards are quite well preserved, the spine is sun faded but the white lettering is bright and intact. The bookplate on the front pastedown states: From the Library of The Spirella Employees' Welfare Association. There are no other library marks in the book, however, there is a sheet of paper on the rear paste-down which has been taped down. This was evidently done many years ago since the tape has now aged to yellow. The book has a bit of a musty smell. A difficult book to find in the true first edition. Please view the many other rare titles available for purchase at our store. Bookseller Inventory # 000292
