Item Description: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 1954,1954,1955, London, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo. A most attractive set of Tolkien's three Landmark Books: (1) The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 2,500 first impression/first state copies bound by Jarrold and Sons, very Nearly Fine condition in alike dust-wrapper; (2) The Two Towers, 3,250 first impressions, faded top-stain, light foxing of page edges, in about Fine dust-wrapper; (3) The Return of the King, one of 7,000 First Edition/First Printings, Near Fine with light foxing to page edges in about Fine, second state dustjacket with reviewer comments to first two titles on back-flap, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page 49 and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11]. All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto, back free endpaper with minor professional paper restoration. Dust-wrappers with original prices, free of prior owner inscriptions or markings. Rather scarce in this condition; Tolkien began The Lord of the Rings between 16 and 19 December 1937, three months after The Hobbit was published and George Allen & Unwin were encouraging Tolkien, against his inclination, to write a sequel. The rest is history. As C. S. Lewis commented (from the dust-jacket) : "If Ariosto rivalled it in invention (in fact he does not) he would still lack its heroic seriousness. No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner laws; none so seemingly objective, so disinfected from the taint of the author's merely individual psychology, no so relevant to the actual human situation yet so free from allegory. And what fine shading there is in the variations of style to meet the almost endless diversity of scenes and characters - comic, homely, epic, monstrous, or diabolic.". Bookseller Inventory # 12777

Item Description: London George Allen & Unwin, 1954. Lovely First Edition Set of Tolkien's Masterpiece TOLKIEN, J.R.R. [The Lord of the Rings Trilogy]. The Fellowship of the Ring. Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings. [Together with:] The Two Towers. Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings. [And:] The Return of the King. Being the Third Part of The Lord of the Rings. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. TOLKIEN, J.R.R. The Fellowship of the Ring. Being the First Part of The Lord of the Rings. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. First edition. The first book is near fine with contemporary reviews tipped in on the rear paste-down, otherwise clean and unmarked. Cloth and spine titling, bright and fresh. In a near fine dust jacket that has a subtle tissue repair to separation at the lower edge of the front flap. Minor toning to the spine and soiling at the extremities, otherwise an attractive example. [Together with:] TOLKIEN, J.R.R. The Two Towers. Being the Second Part of The Lord of the Rings. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. First edition. Book two is near fine with the top-stain lightly faded near the spine, otherwise a bright, fresh copy. In a near fine dust jacket with a few stray marks near the author's name on the front panel and the spine gently toned. [And:] TOLKIEN, J.R.R. The Return of the King. Being the Third Part of The Lord of the Rings. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1955. First edition. Book three is just about fine in a lovely near fine dust jacket with the spine gently toned, otherwise in excellent condition. Page 49 with signature mark "4" and with sagging type. A scarce set, particularly in collectible condition, with just 3000 copies of the first book, 3,250 of the second and 7,000 of the final book printed. This set appears to have been collected early as the spine toning is uniform. All original maps and prices intact, as issued. A timeless classic and a cornerstone of the fantasy genre, The Lord of The Rings follows the adventures of the hobbit Frodo Baggins and his compatriots as they battle the Dark Lord Sauron, and attempt to destroy the ring that gives him power over Middle Earth. Tolkien began writing the novel when he was 45 and it took him 12 years to finish it. (The Lord of the Rings would not be published until 1955.) The books, which were inspired by Tolkien’s interest in subjects as far reaching as mythology and philology, went on to become a sensation – selling over 150 million copies and being translated into over 30 languages. W.H. Auden called The Lord of the Rings a "masterpiece", and it has appeared on Le Monde’s list of the 100 best books of the century. The books were also adapted into the Oscar award winning film trilogy, directed by Peter Jackson and starring Elijah Wood, Ian McKellen, and Viggo Mortensen. ".among the greatest works of imaginative fiction of the twentieth century." (Contemporary Sunday Telegraph Review) Near Fine. Hammond A5a.i, ii, iii. HBS 67341. $27,500. Item Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1954. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Allen & Unwin, 1954, 1954, 1955, first edition of each title, uniform wear so have likely been kept together for all these years. Sliptext 4 state on RotK. Very nice condition books and jackets, but not as nice as my other set listed, thus the lower price. Book clothe covers have minor marks and spotting, curved spines, but no lean. Bindings tight, maps fine. TT has a damp stain to spine head, spine gilt is worn on all three books. FotR has a little more wear and tear than the other two which is often the case. No marks to books. Correct edition dust jackets, unclipped, minor grubbiness in a few places, the edges in particular, spines are darkened with age which is the main flaw as this set would cost 30% more otherwise. However no tattiness or paper loss except to spine corners of TT. Grey colors still pretsent on covers an flaps, often these are faded to white/beige. Overall as nice as they come without spending twice the money. Ask for photos for a better indicator of condition. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 001962

Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1963. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1963. The true 1st Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". The Fellowship of the Ring is signed by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien, to the title page. A wonderful provenance on this signature, as it comes with a note signed by Merlin Unwin, the son of Rayner Unwin. It states that The Fellowship, "belonged to my father Rayner Unwin (Tolkien's editor and publisher) and was kept in his personal library at our family home in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. After his death in 2000 it remained there until the death of his widow, Carol, in 2012. Merlin Unwin". The young lad whose book report was instrumental in the publishing of the Hobbit, kept this signed copy for many years. Has the initials A.R.R. to the back of the free endpaper. It has been added to this partial set, which had the original slipcase and the other two books, to complete this lovely set. I know of only one other signed set of this Deluxe Edition, which was given to Pauline Baynes, and recently sold for an extremely high price at auction. This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, and the original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing and marks to the covers, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, Initials to the back free endpaper, with no other writing or inscriptions in any of the books, except for the authors signature. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The original maps are all present, and have no tears or misfolds, nor any browning to the folds as often happens. The spine of the Two Towers is only slightly lighter in color, less so than the common flaw with this edition. Seems to only occur with the Two Towers, and rarely the other two books. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has some minor splits starting to the entry corners, but very little rubbing to the back corners, and no bumped corners as is often found. Clean and bright, one of the nicest I've run across in many years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues, with the signed copy added, makes a marvelous set for the Tolkien enthusiast. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, one small scuff to the back side edge, but whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce signed set with it's original Pauline Baynes illustrated slipcase. A full leather clamshell case has been crafted to house this wonderful set, including the original slipcase. The clamshell features full black leather with recessed panels, holding reproductions of Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. A beautiful presentation to house and protect this extraordinary set. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued. Bookseller Inventory # 1228

Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1954. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. George Allen & Unwin, published in 1954, 1954, and 1955, the 1st UK Edition, all are First impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 1500 copies printed on July 29th, 1954, a First Impression. The Two Towers is a First impression, one of 2250 copies published November 11th, 1954. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the 1st State, as per Hammon & Anderson, with the signature mark '4' and having the slipped type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, making this the later state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears or extra folds. All three books are in their original dustjackets, showing a modest amount of soiling along with a bit of tanning to the spines and a slight bit of fading to the red lettering on the spines. A small amount of chips or loss to the fold and spine tips of The Two Towers and The Return of the King the only faults noted. The dustjacket of The Fellowship is price clipped, the other two are not. The Fellowship has had some conservation and restoration to repair and strenghten the folds of the dustjacket, which were starting to split. No major infill, mainly just to strengthen the flap and spine fold areas, and to stop any further splitting. The other two dustjackets are untouched, with minor rubbing and a small bit of loss to a few area's, mostly around the folds. The Fellowship has a previous owners name to the front free endpaper, no other markings or writing, to any of the books. The front endpapers show a light amount of offsetting on all three books. The text blocks are all clean, bright and tight, without any internal foxing or markings. The gilt is slightly dulled but untarnished on the Two Towers, while the Fellowship and Return are clean and bright. The boards are very clean and unmarked, with very light shelf wear on the bottom edge, A couple of lightly bumped corners and a minor scuff to the boards of the Fellowship, the only minor faults. A fantastic set of First Editions of this classic of fantasy literature, with a custom full leather slipcase, to protect and house these 'precious' books. Any questions, please feel free to ask. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Other Tolkien books available, include both the UK and US editions, original cloth bindings, custom fine bindings, and Signed/Numbered/Limited Editions. Very Good Plus / Very Good. Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1954. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. George Allen & Unwin, published in 1954, 1954, and 1955, the 1st UK Edition, 1st impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st impression published July 29th, 1954. One of 1500 printed for the UK. The Two Towers is a 1st impression published November 11th, 1954. One of 2250 printed for the UK. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the later state, with the signature mark '4' and having the 'slipped' type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, which is the same as this copy, but now this is considered the later state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears noted, but the Fellowship shows some misfolds. Both the Fellowship and The Two Towers have the 1st state point map with the red dot off the coast of Umbar. The books show some only the lightest bit of soiling with the boards showing clean and bright. Gilt titles, author and publisher are still bright though slightly tarnished, some light rubbing to the edges, one bumped corner to the Return of the King. A little rubbing and shelfwear to the bottom of the boards, with the spine tips a little pushed and rubbed as well. All three books are in their original dustjackets, which are not price-clipped. The dustjackets are all moderately soiled, with some tanning and fading to the red lettering on the spines. The red topstain is clean and unfaded on The Fellowship and The Return, while the Two Towers shows some fading. Previous owners name to the front free endpaper of The Fellowship and The Two Towers, no other writing in any of the books. The endpapers show a moderate amount of offsetting on the The Fellowship and Return of the King, with no offsetting to the Two Towers. No foxing noted in any of the books. The dustjackets are not price clipped, and they show some minor loss to the edges, mostly to the flap folds and spine tips. They have a number of small closed tears to the edges, the largest to the top of the spine area on the Two Towers, effecting the 'J.R.' of the authors name. No repairs or restoration to these original dustjackets, completely unsophisticated. The text blocks are all clean and bright, without any internal foxing or markings. A highly sought after set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. Digital photo's available, inquire if interested. Tolkien, Volume II a New York Times book review of The Fellowship of the Ring, Volume III has review quotes for the Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers). Pagination: Volume I, 423 pages; Volume II, 352 pages, and Volume III 416 pages. *** CONDITION: Overall all three volumes are in very good condition, although they have clearly been read more than once, hinges in Volumes II and III are solid, hinges in Volume I are starting, there is some bumping to head and tails of the spines, the corners are generally very good although the bottom corners of Volume I are starting to wear through, Volumes I and III have prior owner small address labels on front free endpapers, and all volumes have some toning to the first few pages and to the text block edges. Dust jackets are not price-clipped, although there is no price printed on Volume I (correct per Hammond), all three are overall very good with some edgewear and old, minor staining to the inside of the jackets near the spine. Maps are all in near fine condition with no tears and only one unintended crease. *** CITATIONS: Hammond A5.b.i., ii., iii; as amended in "The Tolkien Collector" No. 23, July 2000, wherein he corrected the bibliographic details for the copyright page of The Two Towers for the U.S. edition. ***POSTAGE: Any additional postage will be covered by seller for this set. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Item Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1955. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. A lovely 1955 year set, above average condition. Includes a later 1957 box but not sold at the time. Impressions 4,2,1 of the three books. 1955, 1955, 1955, likely purchased as a set as the wear and aging is fairly uniform, with small onwers name stamp to all three books ffep. Loved and cherished by one owner. This is the likely first true set of the three books you could buy at one time and place. It was never possible to purchase a first edition set i.e. the 1st impression of each book, in a shop. Although a 3,2,1 impression set is possible, unlikely due to wide distribution. These early impressions are increasingly hard to find without much more wear and tear. All three jackets are similar condition, fading to spine and overall color, slight tattering and paper loss to spine ends, but no serious rips or tears. TT has a 3rd impression jacket. Jacket impressions were interchanged often at A & U. Slight lean to all three books, bindings tight. As nice an early set as you will find without spending much more. Please ask for additional photos as this will show the condition better than a description. The box is worse for wear, but not seriously damaged. Bookseller Inventory # 002024

Item Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1963. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien. The true 1st Edition, Allen and Unwin 1963 Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. The gilt is still bright, without any rubs or tarnishing. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, with an original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Near Fine condition, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, no writing or inscriptions in any of the books. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The spines of the books are a matching black color, possibly a tiny bit sunned. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has a couple of minor bumps to the corners, and a little rubbing to the edges, no color loss to speak of. Clean and bright, without any corner splits, a lovely case that is one of the looser fitting ones I've run across. Allows the books to be easily removed, versus the tighter ones that are sometimes very difficult to withdraw the books. One of the nicest sets overall I've run across in years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets were produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, but is whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce set and the orignal publishers slipcase illustrated by Pauline Baynes. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Near Fine / No Jacket, as Issued. Bookseller Inventory # 1222
