Book Description: George Allen & Unwin, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. George Allen & Unwin, Ltd., London, 1954. Hardcover. Three volumes. Each volume is a first edition, first issue. All three volumes are fine and bright. All in original dustwrappers. Simply the finest set for sale in the world. Housed in a quarter-morocco folding case. Probably the most beloved fantasy, and easily one of the most important novels of the 20th Century. Recently discovered by a new generation, in part due to the award-winning film trilogy by Peter Jackson. Mixed issue sets, made-up sets employing wildly divergent-condition of the individual volumes, and rebound sets abound, but first issue sets in uniformly fine condition remain scarce and desirable. Book Description: George Allen & Unwin, Ltd. 1954,1954,1955, London, 1954. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. First Edition; First Printing. 8vo. A most attractive set of Tolkien's three Landmark Books: (1) The Fellowship of the Ring, one of 2,500 first impression/first state copies bound by Jarrold and Sons, very Nearly Fine condition in alike dust-wrapper; (2) The Two Towers, 3,250 first impressions, faded top-stain, light foxing of page edges, in about Fine dust-wrapper; (3) The Return of the King, one of 7,000 First Edition/First Printings, Near Fine with light foxing to page edges in about Fine, second state dustjacket with reviewer comments to first two titles on back-flap, variant three with signature mark '4' present on page 49 and lines 'sagging' in the middle, originally designated as first state by Hammond/Anderson, later corrected by Wayne Hammond [The Tolkien Collector, Issue 11]. All volumes complete with folded maps of Middle Earth tipped in onto recto, back free endpaper with minor professional paper restoration. Dust-wrappers with original prices, free of prior owner inscriptions or markings. Rather scarce in this condition; Tolkien began The Lord of the Rings between 16 and 19 December 1937, three months after The Hobbit was published and George Allen & Unwin were encouraging Tolkien, against his inclination, to write a sequel. The rest is history. As C. S. Lewis commented (from the dust-jacket) : "If Ariosto rivalled it in invention (in fact he does not) he would still lack its heroic seriousness. No imaginary world has been projected which is at once so multifarious and so true to its own inner laws; none so seemingly objective, so disinfected from the taint of the author's merely individual psychology, no so relevant to the actual human situation yet so free from allegory. And what fine shading there is in the variations of style to meet the almost endless diversity of scenes and characters - comic, homely, epic, monstrous, or diabolic.". Bookseller Inventory # 12777

Book Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1954. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Allen & Unwin, 1954, 1954, 1955, first edition of each title, uniform wear so have likely been kept together for all these years. Sliptext 4 state on RotK. Very nice condition books and jackets, but not as nice as my other set listed, thus the lower price. Book clothe covers have minor marks and spotting, curved spines, but no lean. Bindings tight, maps fine. TT has a damp stain to spine head, spine gilt is worn on all three books. FotR has a little more wear and tear than the other two which is often the case. No marks to books. Correct edition dust jackets, unclipped, minor grubbiness in a few places, the edges in particular, spines are darkened with age which is the main flaw as this set would cost 30% more otherwise. However no tattiness or paper loss except to spine corners of TT. Grey colors still pretsent on covers an flaps, often these are faded to white/beige. Overall as nice as they come without spending twice the money. Ask for photos for a better indicator of condition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 001962

Book Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1963. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition, Hobbits, Lord of the Rings. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. The Lord of the Rings, by J.R.R. Tolkien, published by George Allen & Unwin in 1963. The true 1st Deluxe Edition of the 3 volumes of the Lord of the Rings, comprised of "The Fellowship of the Ring", "The Two Towers", and "The Return of the King". The Fellowship of the Ring is signed by the author, J.R.R. Tolkien, to the title page. A wonderful provenance on this signature, as it comes with a note signed by Merlin Unwin, the son of Rayner Unwin. It states that The Fellowship, "belonged to my father Rayner Unwin (Tolkien's editor and publisher) and was kept in his personal library at our family home in Little Missenden, Buckinghamshire. After his death in 2000 it remained there until the death of his widow, Carol, in 2012. Merlin Unwin". The young lad whose book report was instrumental in the publishing of the Hobbit, kept this signed copy for many years. Has the initials A.R.R. to the back of the free endpaper. It has been added to this partial set, which had the original slipcase and the other two books, to complete this lovely set. I know of only one other signed set of this Deluxe Edition, which was given to Pauline Baynes, and recently sold for an extremely high price at auction. This set is bound in the original Black Buckram cloth with gilt titles, author and publisher to the spines of each volume. Each volume features Bevel-Edged boards, gilded page edges, and the original silk bookmark sewn in. The books are in Very Good Plus condition showing some light rubbing and marks to the covers, with almost no marks or rubbing to the gilded edges, Initials to the back free endpaper, with no other writing or inscriptions in any of the books, except for the authors signature. The textblocks are clean and unmarked, with a very tight binding. The original maps are all present, and have no tears or misfolds, nor any browning to the folds as often happens. The spine of the Two Towers is only slightly lighter in color, less so than the common flaw with this edition. Seems to only occur with the Two Towers, and rarely the other two books. The books are housed in the very scarce original publishers slipcase featuring the Pauline Baynes color "Triptych" artwork. This case has some minor splits starting to the entry corners, but very little rubbing to the back corners, and no bumped corners as is often found. Clean and bright, one of the nicest I've run across in many years. The scarcest of all the original Allen & Unwin 1st Editions, as well as the Houghton Mifflin issues, with the signed copy added, makes a marvelous set for the Tolkien enthusiast. According to publishers records, 1000 or less sets produced. Briefly mentioned in the Tolkien bibliography by Hammond and Anderson on page 98. The outside of the slipcase show some superficial rubbing, one small scuff to the back side edge, but whole & complete, without any major stains or faults. A rare opportunity for this scarce signed set with it's original Pauline Baynes illustrated slipcase. Digital images available upon request. Other Tolkien sets, original and rebound are available. Inquire if interested. A wonderful addition to anyone's Tolkien collection. Very Good Plus / No Jacket, as Issued. Bookseller Inventory # 1228

Book Description: London: George Allen and Unwin, 1954–5, 1954. 3 volumes, octavo. Finely bound by The Chelsea Bindery in full red morocco, titles and decoration to spines gilt, "Eye of Sauron" to front boards gilt, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. Housed in a matching leather entry slip case. A fine set. Each volume has a map illustrated by the Author. First editions, first impressions. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is one of the most influential literary works of the century. Its first reception was mixed: favourable and perceptive reviews from C. S. Lewis and from W. H. Auden, who had attended Tolkien's Oxford lectures, were countered by others who were hostile, sometimes bitterly so. But the trilogy went on to astonishing sales and forged a major change in public literary taste. "Heroic fantasy" has since become one of the most commercially successful literary genres, having a transforming impact upon the entertainment industry, from electronic games to movies. Book Description: Allen & Unwin, London, 1954. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good Plus. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good Plus. J.R.R. Tolkien (illustrator). 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. George Allen & Unwin, published in 1954, 1954, and 1955, the 1st UK Edition, 1st impressions. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st impression published July 29th, 1954. One of 1500 printed for the UK. The Two Towers is a 1st impression published November 11th, 1954. One of 2250 printed for the UK. The Return of the King is a 1st impression published October 20th, 1955. This copy is the 1st State, as per Hammon & Anderson, with the signature mark '4' and having the slipped type on page 49. Correspondence with Wayne Hammond has indicated he has revised his original definition of the 1st state, from what was described in the Tolkien Bibliography, making this the later state. All original maps are present and in Near Fine condition, no tears or extra folds. All three books are in the correct original dustjackets, with the Return of the King being the 1st State, lacking the blurbs to the rear flap. The Fellowship has a previous owners name to the front endpaper. No other markings or writing noted an the other books. The front and rear endpapers show a light amount of offsetting and some foxing to the edges and endpapers of the Two Towers, but none to the interior of any of the books. The dustjackets are not price clipped, and they have minor rubbing and splits or loss to a few area's, mostly around the flap folds and spine fold areas. The text blocks are all clean, bright and tight, without any internal foxing or markings. A beautiful, collectable set of first editions of this classic of fantasy literature. The Fellowship of the Ring is a 1st UK Edition, 1st impression with the date 1954 to the title page, and no other printings listed, indicating a true 1st Edition 1st Impression. The book is in Very Good Plus condition, no spine lean or other faults noted. Small previous owner's name to the front endpaper. The gilt is bright and untarnished on the spine. The boards are very clean and bright, with virtually no shelf wear on the bottom edge, A couple of lightly bumped corners the only faults. The dustjacket is unclipped and shows beautifully, with very little tanning, or light fading to the red lettering of the spine and only moderate soiling. A beautiful, correct 1st impression dustjacket. The Two Tower's - 1st UK Edition, 1st impression, has the date 1954 to the title page, and no other printings listed, which would indicate a true 1st imp. Book is in Very Good Plus condition. no name or other writing. with some very light offsetting on the endpapers. Shows a slight bit of foxing to the last page, opposite the map, which shows thru to the rear endpaper. The boards are very clean and bright, without any bumps to the corners, very little shelf wear on the bottom edges, and only minor wear to the spine tips. Gilt is still clean and bright. The dustjacket is not clipped, and has light fading of the red lettering on the spine, and again is only lightly soiled. Some small chips, closed tears or wear to the edges, mainly at the spine tips, and only the smallest loss to the fold area's. The original map is present, without any tears or extra folds, also has the 1st state point with the red dot off coast of Umbar. A lovely copy, in its correct and original 1st impression dustjacket. The Return of the King - 1st UK Edition, 1st impression, the later state with the slipped type and signature mark '4' on page 49, as per Wayne Hammond's revised opinion. No previous owners name or any other markings, a very light bit of foxing/offsetting on the endpapers. The boards are very clean and bright, one lightly bumped corner, and no shelf wear is evident. Gilt is again clean and bright. Very Good Plus / Very Good Plus. Bookseller Inventory # 1092

While The Lord of the Rings was made into a highly successful film series starting with The Fellowship of the Ring in 2001, the books were widely read in the 60s and 70s and imbued a generation with love of Hobbits and the tale of the Great Ring. *** DESCRIPTION: Volumes bound in light blue cloth, gilt lettering on the front and spine, cream endpapers, each volume has a map tipped into the back of the book, Volumes I and II have identical maps of Middle-Earth, Volume III has a close-up showing Rohan, Gondor, and Mordor. Unclipped dust jackets have decorative vignette on a colored background surrounding title within a white circle, back of each jacket varies (Volume I gives a bio of J.R.R. Book Description: George Allen and Unwin, London, 1954. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Allen & Unwin, 1954, 1955, 1955 2nd impression set with original matching jackets. Note thse could not have been purchased as a set at one time, but one at a time on each book's new release. Given the uniform wear, these have been kept together a long time. Arguably more scarce than a 1st/1st set given the original jackets. Tattering to jacket spine ends, partially split on the cover'spine seams and corners, but remarkable good overall. RotK rear cover seam split along most of the spine rear cover seam, but attached with acid free restoration tape. Books have only minor wear. Note, per photos, FotR is shorter that than the other two books. This was an error on the 2 & 3rd impressions which was corrected by the 4th printing. I've seen a couple of these sets in 12 years as a dealer, this is the nicest overall condition I've seen. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 002025
