Item Description: Fields, Osgood & Company, Boston, 1870. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. First printing; the story "Brown of Calaveras" has not been added. This book will close its text block; the dark brown endpapers and their hinges are in nice shape and have not required any repair, but we downgrade this copy from "very good" to "good" due in part to moderate rub at head and heel of spine, and particularly to the considerable mottling of the purple cloth covering of spine and of the original, blindstamped rear board. Gilt spine titles still legible, but considerably faded, as usual. There are a few small, scattered dark spots to pages, mostly to margins; all pages remain easily legible. Harte was of course a fine story-teller, in an era when the somewhat exotic patois of the mining camps offered to urban readers the delights of the authentically unfamiliar. That feeling of authenticity was presumably further enhanced by the fact that he rarely seems to have encountered (or seen fit to record) a tale with a happy ending. 239 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 003939
