Paperback. Condition: new. Paperback. The memoirs of Mikhail Gorbachev, one of the greatest world leaders of the twentieth century.Mikhail Gorbachev is the man who changed everything. It was Gorbachev's initiative that raised the Iron Curtain; his actions that resulted in one of the era's most symbolic events, the demolition on the Berlin Wall; his reforms that set in train events leading to the fall of Communism.Twelve years ago, when Gorbachev came to power, the globe was still divided into two armed camps, one for each superpower - as it had been ever since 1945. The Cold War dominated international politics, from Angola to Afghanistan. The man who became leader of the Soviet Union in 1985 was much younger than his predecessors, yet there was little else to distinguish him from the stony-faced apparatchiks waving from the Kremlin. He seemed a model Communist, ideologically committed to socialism, raised wholly within the confines of the Party. Yet Gorbachev realized that the system could not continue. What was it about this man which enabled him to see so much more clearly than his colleagues?Like most who start a revolution, Gorbachev has been left behind. No longer in power, he has been forced to endure criticism from those wise after the event - most notably Boris Yeltsin, who became undisputed leader after the failed military coup that finally displaced Gorbachev from office. In these memoirs Gorbachev reveals his feelings about the sad state of his country today. He tells us of his childhood in the North Caucasus during the Second World War, of coming to Moscow as a student and meeting Raisa Maksimovna, of his glittering career as a Party functionary, eventually becoming one of the most powerful men in the world. This is a historical document of the first importance. It is also a fascinating human story, an insider's account of the events that we never dared believe could happen. Mikhail Gorbachev is the man who changed everything. No longer in power, he has been forced to endure criticism from those wise after the event - most notably Boris Yeltsin, who became undisputed leader after the failed military coup that finally displaced Gorbachev from office. First Edition
First edition of Gorbachev's autobiography. Octavo, original half cloth, illustrated with photographs, Foreward by Martin McCauley. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Mario J. Pulice. Jacket photograph by Eddie Adams. "A timely reminder of what made Gorbachev so revolutionary back in 1985, these memoirs offer a detailed but readable chronicle of his achievements at the top, with the domestic and foreign policy aspects of perestroika covered, chronologically, in separate sections that comprise two thirds of the book. Highly educated compared with his predecessors, Gorbachev is remarkably fair, even to political enemies like Yeltsin, and it often seems that being too nice was part of his undoing. Especially revealing are the real or perceived limits on his power, at the top, to carry out reforms at home despite his successes in foreign policy" (Library Journal).

Mikhail Gorbachev (1931-2022) was the final General Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, serving from 1985 until its dissolution in 1991. He implemented significant legal reforms under the policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring), which aimed at increasing transparency in governmental institutions and introducing market-like reforms in the Soviet economy, respectively. Gorbachev's tenure saw the signing of several key international treaties, including the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty with the United States in 1987, which had profound legal implications for international arms control agreements.

A substantial heavy book which is prone to losing its shape but this is a Fine, tight unread copy in Fine dustjacket. SIGNED (for the seller in person) by Mikhail Gorbachev at the title page. The signing took place at what was the bookshop located in Harrods Department Store in Knightsbridge, London.
